I am sure that many of you are aware of the pro teams that some of the former players from the past few years are playing for, but I thought some of you folks may be interested in this.

Uhh. I think he is talking about recent Falcons. Blake is old school and was in the NHL before most of the kids in school were potty-trained. Mentioning Rob Blake to them is like people mentioning Ken Morrow to those of us in school when Blake, Emerson, et. al. were at BG.

Of course, seeing only one person of recent players in the NHl makes your think hard about how far the program has progressed in the last 12 years...

I think that Ryan Wetterberg is in Sweden, Greg Day is a superstar in France.
not sure about Grady Moore. Scott Hewson is in retirement

Glad to hear Adam's back over this way. A Wheeling visit would actually give me reason to go see the Dayton Bombers play.

I saw that Jim Tudor from the BG club team is on the Toledo Storm, also I believe that Roger Leonard who played his last two years with the club team played pro last year in the coast league.

I dont understand hockey very much....but this seems very odd to me. Why are there so many pro leagues when the top pro league has lost a ton of popularity recently.

How can BG, who has been less then average over the last ten years (i think) have players not even on the team playing professionally.

How do you play on the club team and go pro....?

Tudor I believe has grauated from BG in '06 as did Leonard in '05. Im not really sure but in many programs a head coach will refuse to bring up players from the club team because it shows his inability to recruit when random players show up on campus and play club and are better than some guys 4th line guys on varsity. Although that wasnt the case here Pooch dismissed Leonard from the team. But over the last 10 years BG has had a few large skilled forwards play club. I know Mich St called up a goalie from club as did OSU this year.

I do not know if BG's club team is any good this year, but in DII club only 2 or 3 guys would be able to contribute at all on a varsity team. Most just played HS or midget AAA, some played junior B but were probably were not first line guys. DI club is a different story, many of those players played good junior B or junior a in canada and in the NAHL and USHL.

AS far as the varsity players go Josh Boyd has no business anywhere near a DI rink. Does anyone know if he was given a scholarship?

There's lots of different answers to your questions.

Hockey has an extensive minor league system in place, much like baseball does. Hockey's just always had this. Back in the day, amateur teams competed for the Stanley Cup. This was before the NHL was even formed and even for a little while after the beginning of the NHL. The league didn't gain control of the trophy until the 1920s (1929, maybe?). That's another can of worms entirely; point is that amateur and minor leagues have been around just as long as professional hockey has.

The popularity of the major league sports in this country doesn't seem to have much to do with the infrastructure of minor leagues that feed the pro clubs. If that was all there was to it, I'd think that football would have some minor leagues, but they don't.

As for our 'club' players earning spots on minor league rosters, that's hardly the case. Roger Leonard was far from the worst player on the varsity team the three years he played. He didn't play varsity his senior year (I don't know if that was his choice or the coach's) but he chose to finish his degree. The club team was a viable option for ice time, but he was vastly superior to anyone else on the ice in the three games I watched. He also broke practically every scoring record in the league, if I remember correctly. So Roger was hardly a club-level player that got lucky to get a contract somewhere.

I don't know much about Tudor's situation, so I can't speak to that other than to say that he was on the varsity team. If he did play on the club team, I'd imagine that he was probably the best player on the ice.
