check out hte MAC stats

Post by Globetrotter »

We have the leading scorer, leading assist man, and Sims, the guy who was suppossed to not be a very goood shooter, leads the MAC in 3 %.

We have 10 players averaging 10 mins or more. Hamb let was a get I tell you what. I bet by the time MAC play comes around we have the best back court in hte MAC.

Toledo, Akron, Ball State, and Kent have strong backcourts that are more proven. It will be fun to see how ours compares.

Statistically, Samarco is clearly the best in the MAC.

Hamblet is averaging 5+ in rebounds and assists. It would be very interesting to know which MAC players have done that before.

In my highly uneducated opinion, Samarco has a real shot to be very special in the NBA. He has a jumper that is ridiculously awesome.

He can shoot the lights out, can flash and score, can rebound and may be the best player in the MAC.

I know very little about his defense. But offensively he has everything McLCeod had save the explosion....And he has to be a better ball handler than keith was in college because lets face it....who wasn't.....He was too quick for his won dribbling ability.

The only thing that is saving commonsense from absolutely ripping this post to pieces is the fact that you admit that you have a highly uneducated opinion, which your post illustrates to the fullest. As for whoever that is comparing Samarco to Mcleod, erase that post so you may hold at least a shred of credibility for your opinions in the future. Go Falcons! Ay ziggy zoomba!!

C'mon guys that's not fair to Martin Samarco. He's a fine player in his own right, but he's no Keith McLeod, plain & simple.

Compare & contrast the two? It's pretty easy.

Jump shot -- Keith McLeod shot 41% from 3 his final year, Samarco is shooting 31% this year. Martin did shoot 45% last year, so we'll see if he can bring that up this year. In this regard I think they're about equal.

Overall scoring -- Overall they both average about the same 22-23 ppg. Keith, however, shot 45% from the field his final year. Samarco is about 41% both this year and last. The edge definitely goes to Keith, IMO. He also had a knack for getting himself on the FT line more than Martin.

Rebounding -- About the same, both guys give you 4-5 boards a game.

Distributing -- Both guys were primarily scorers. Keith gave you about 3 assists a game, and a 1:1 assist:turnover ratio. This year Samarco is doing about the same. Last year however Samarco only had about 1 assist per game and almost twice as many turnovers...I'll say edge Keith until I see Samarco keep up this pace for the entire year...then it'll be a push.

Defense -- No contest, flat out, not contest. Samarco doesn't play defense. Keith would man up on the very best that the opposition had to offer. He was not a stellar defender, but he was pretty good. Martin isn't even in that league, IMO.

Overall I just don't think it's fair to compare the two. Keith McLeod was an outstanding player, and I just don't think Samarco is on his level. That's no knock on Martin Samarco, he's a very good player. It should also be noted that McLeod's senior year the MAC was really, really good. BG, Ball State, and KSU (Elite 8 year) all should've been tourney teams. The MAC that Samarco played in last year wasn't nearly on that level. Another thing that makes it tough to compare is that Keith was never asked to carry a team by himself...we had an outstanding PG in Pardon & Matela gave us great inside game. If Keith had an off night those guys could pick up the slack...Samarco knows going in that if he doesn't play well we likely don't stand a chance.

At this point, I think McLeod was the better player, but it's really not fair to compare them.

I agree with all that was said. Samarco is probably the better leader, which is next to meaningless because at best he would be at the end of the bench in the pros.

I also think that becuase McCLeod played with much better players that could have also helped his stats, more open shots, more assists, less focus on him...etc. etc.

Overall I would say great post. I like to think that the MAC player of the year should make the NBA every year. And I like to think that Samarco should be the MAC player of the year. History would prove me wrong....

There is a visible difference in athleticism between the two players. McLeod was the much better athlete. He was faster, had a better first step, jumped better, was quicker, and finished. Also, he was as tough as nails. When McLeod showed up at BG as a freshman, one could immediately see that he had pro potential. Samarco doesn't have that type of athleticism. He is, however, a very effective college basketball player. His leadership has been a gift to the team. He's very agressive and has excellent hands and footwork. He's a very refined player.

Samarco's ppg is high and his shooting %s are low because, imho, he's taking too many shots. He's been driving into the interior where he often hasn't been able to finish. He's primarily an outside scorer, so he'll occasionally have an off shooting night as all outside shooters do. With him taking taking 40-50% of our shots, an off night for Samarco means that we have no practical chance of winning.

I definitely agree with both points. Samarco doesn't have the athleticism of McLeod, and I'm not sure it's even close. What's more, from an NBA standard, Keith is not a top tier athlete either. Given that I just don't see Samarco as an NBA guy. That doesn't diminish what he can do for this team, but he's got a lot of work to do if he wants to play in the NBA.

I definitely agree with you that Samarco is taking too many shots, but a lot of that is not his fault. Oftentimes he seems to be the only player willing to shoot. Sometimes he forces up bad shots, for sure, but when his teammates are passing on good looks, what do you expect him to do?

Going beyond this debate, for this year's team, they really need SOMEBODY to step up as another consistent scoring threat. From what I've seen Sims seems like the most likely candidate, but Nate Miller might be the guy as well. We just need somebody to take the pressure off Martin while Marschall is out...once Eric comes back it'd be sweet to have 3 or more legit threats, as well.

If you can get through injuries early, they make your team deeeper in the end.
