I'd rather teach my guards to follow their shot and my big men to defend the outlet pass (you see a lot of fast breaks started because the defensive rebounder has no one bothering him when he makes the outlet pass...that's just a function of laziness).

Good point, However, whether or not the perimeter shooter follows his shot, teams should ALWAYS defend the outlet pass.

The shooter isn't supposed to be the one getting back, unless it's basically a 3 from the top of the arc. It's the guard that doesn't take the shot that is supposed to get back.

I agree, the hoops talk is great. If you want some more, I have what is probably a stupid question - can someone explain to me what the 1-5 positions are? I have never known that and have always wondered. Obviously, I've never been really big into basketball...

1- Point Guard- Hamblet, this year
2- Shooting Guard- think Samarco but usually a smaller body build
3- Small Forward- think Nate Miller but taller
4- Power Forward- Erik Marschall comes to mind if he were stronger
5- Center- Obviously Lefeld

If Lionel Sullivan is gone, that would give us two scholarships to offer in the offseason and I would think that we'll pick up the point guard, in my mind, we desperately need and the post player most of you want. Recruiting services have us offering more than a few "shooting" guards.

What's your opinion of the team so far this year? Can BG go .500 or better in the MAC? You, Grant, Hammb and a few others have the insight on the hoops team. I've only seen one game so far and it was that clunker to Central Arkansas. Sheese.

It appears to me that this team has some real heart to it. If they keep improving, they could be a dangerous team come tourney time. Hey, if Ohio U can play in a bowl game for the first time since 1968, how about if BG gets to the BiG Dance for the first time since '68?

I know we haven't played a tough schedule but I'll still take 9-4 right now. When we get Marschall back, that will be a huge lift. How much longer till he gets back?

Hey Freak and Happy New Year!

I haven't been to a live game yet, since we have relocated to L'Ville, but from what I've gathered from the radio and AZZ, I think we're improved, but still not great.

I would be surprised to see us at .500 in the MAC, just b/c I think the MAC is pretty solid this year.

Nate Miller is a really good player and would've been a huge lift on the football team as well. I saw him play RB and S in high school and was easily the best player on the field with something like 5 other D-1 commits playing at the same time.

I heard that Marschall could be back for Buffalo. Hopefully he has gotten stronger or quicker than last year. I think the MAC is a bit of a stretch for him, he's too small to really play 4 and too slow to guard any 3's.

I look for us to target a true post player and a playmaking point guard in the offseason.

I am looking forward to heading north in a few weeks and seeing them play.

In Marschall's playing time this year he showed some pretty good post moves and was doing a pretty good job on the offensive glass. He's still a total liability on the defensive end, and makes some retarded fouls. Still he's a good for 10-12 points a game and probably 5 boards. He's no star, but at this point he's better than our other post players.

I really like the size/athleticism combo of Otis Polk. He has the type of body that, if he develops, can dominate the MAC. We don't get Greg Oden's around here, but you can usually tell which big men have the potential to be all conference guys. Polk has that. Not guaranteeing he'll reach his potential, but his ceiling is definitely quite high.

I'm really anxious to see Nate next week. He was definitely nervous and rusty in his first game out there, but the dude can play.

Did anyone notice that the guy making all the calls lastnight was the same white haired guy who made all the calls in the Furman game?? Furman was of course another game where we totally outplayed another team and yet somehow couldn't win it. Coincidence?

One of the refs walked into our hotel at the same time as we did and I criticized his ref abilities. We rode the elevator together and he never said a word. I hated that loss it completely knocked me off my square. Coach is better then me because the way the game was officiated everything the players did was a foul. I see why they backed off as they did. Nate hardly ever gets fouls and he had 4. I commend the players for not giving up because it was a no win situation. You had to be there. Coach even got called with a tech so we know he too was frustrated.
