CMU "Going in different direction; Quinn out

Eric Lacy of the Detroit News broke the original news and penned a story for today's Detroit News. However the News only ran part of the story and MAC Report Online was given permission to run the full story:

Wow...a revolving door up there. CMU had a fine year and was clearly the league's best team in 2006. They have a ton of young talent so ya have to wonder what's going on. This AD doesn't seem to care for Quinn a whole lot. Thanks for the update.

Sometimes the heir apparent isn't the right choice....and promoting from within may not allow you to continue the same success. Having said that, I'm a little surprised.

Good for them. I HATE promoting from within. It shows a desire to keep with the status quo, and rarely does it end up in hiring the best candidate for the job.

Wow...ballsy move by the AD up there. The easiest thing in the world to do would have been to hire Quinn to keep the "feel good" momentum going.
He'll definitely share the blame if the program falters now

I agree. We raided Missouri instead of hiring within and so far its worked out pretty well.

H20, if you check my original post on this, I said "sometimes" it doesn't work out. Boise has done well promoting within, as have the Rockets. I just think that it is an automatic impluse when things are going well that may or may not get you the right person for the job.

I agree, and it's tough to fault Krebs for choosing Brandon to replace Urban. He looked like the obvious choice at the time. There are advantages and disadvantages to hiring a HC off the current staff, for any program or team.

I think it's a less than 50/50 endeavor, but certainly it can work out quite well for some teams. Amstutz is a great example of that.

My opinion is that you go out and find the best candidate for the job. If he was already on your staff, fine, heck that might even be some bonus points if it's a tight race. However, I don't like it when teams hire from within without doing a real coaching search. How many outsiders did we interview before we hired Brandon? I'm not real sure. How 'bout Florida with Zook or Miami with Coker?

In all 3 cases, I believe, the eventual hire was the guy the players were backing, as well. I don't think you should let a bunch of 18-22 year olds decide who you'll be paying a 6 figure salary to...especially when they're going to be gone in 3-4 years max.
