Glen Mason?

Post by JimmyZ11381 »

Ok, I don't want this to be a coach bashing thread. And personally, I still support Coach Brandon. But the idea of a coaching changes intrigues me. Glen Mason got canned at Minnesota. Any chance he would want to come to a school like BG.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts were, because I'm bored.

Don't we play Minnesota within the next few years...Would make for an interesting story.

I think he's an average coach, and I don't think he'd be looking to stay here for the long haul.

It's an intriguing name if we had an opening, but I'll say thanks but no thanks.

Mason is one of the few names that would bother me more than Gregg Brandon being our head coach.

Not a big fan. I haven't followed his career too closely over the past 4-5 years, but I remember back in '01 he was a candidate for the OSU job. He played at OSU and there were a number of fans that liked him. I read up on him at the time and was very unimpressed.

I haven't followed Minny closely in the years since then, but I don't remember them doing anything too impressive in that time frame.

They just blew a 31 point lead in a bowl game too...we're plenty good at blowing big leads already.

I tend to agree with both of you guys. I'm not sure Mason would be the right fit. And he definitely would be using us as a stepping stone.

He used Kent as his stepping stone to Minnesota.

Why on earth do we want to hire a guy that just got fired? If he can't get it done there, why give him the chance to get it done here?

I agree he is an average coach.....and he would be a huge upgrade here.

Cnnsi.com "Truth & Rumors" is reporting that Solich is at the top of the Minnesota wish list. Apparently, they have a former Miami AD up there and he is impressed with MAC football. Should make for interesting recruiting battles.

If and when the time comes to find a replacement for Brandon, it is of my opinion that we go about it the same way we did when we landed U.Meyer. Get a young agressive guy with lots of intelligence and savy.....SAVY...

I think he's a good coach, that's sh*t that Minnesota fired him. I dont know how they expect a coach to beat powerhouses and football breeding grounds like OSU, Mich, Wisc, and PSU. Especially when the player you do manage to steal want to go to the NFL. Don't get me wrong he's not an all world coach, but I thought he did an admirable job at Minnesota especially considering the key injuries he's had to deal with!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

odds are IF gb goes we will get a coach who plans on using us a stepping stone, but at least it gives us time to find our own version of a toledo tom...a decent coach who will stick around. get a good coach ala' urban who will recruit and win and give the ad some breathing room to find a long term answer

I think he is an average coach. Losing the bowl game really didn't do him any favors.

I think the biggest reason he was fired, however, is how badly he has wanted to leave. It was well known that he was the runner up for the OSU job a few years back. What most people don't realize, however, was that he went out of his way to put his name in that hat. He's the one that was pimping himself for the job, much more than OSU calling him first.

Minnesota got over that. It was his alma mater, and it's one of the top programs in all of college football, certainly understandable. However, it has recently come out that he did the same thing for the MSU job BOTH times it has come open. Apparently he called MSU to put his name in the mix before John L. Smith was hired, and then again this year before they hired Dantonio.

Mason may be a decent coach, but when he's calling around on a regular basis trying to find other jobs, it's pretty obvious that he's not happy at Minnesota. If you got a guy who is clearly looking to move on, and he's not even doing a stellar job, I think it is certainly justifiable to let him go.

I didn't know the whole story about him wanting out so dang bad. Certainly the OSU thing is extremely justifyable but MSU? I didn't know he was pimping himself for that job. Heck I never even heard his name come up for it! Either way I think coaching at Minnesota is one of the tougher jobs in the nation and he made them pretty respectable considering! Losing a bowl game never helps, but it sounds like he would have been gone anyway? Why didn't they just let him go last year when they seemed so eager to get someone fresh? I think its lame to tell a guy is job is on the line and then say ok you passed the ultimatum. Then make it to a bowl game the next year and fire him! Looks bad on the part of Minnesota IMO!

No thanks to Mason. Average coach, at best. I don't think he'd be in BG long enough to have lunch.

Gregg Brandon is the coach of BGSU so for me, this discussion ends here.
