I was just reading an article on ESPN about Nick Saban leaving for Alabama after saying he was going to stay in Miami. The author followed to call out several other coaches that did the same thing and I couldn't stop thinking that Urban belonged in that club. Low and behold there is a sidebar with Urban's take on the situation.
Florida coach Urban Meyer saw a television report of Nick Saban's 8-year, $32-million contract with Alabama and was taken aback.
Meyer said that Alabama's ability to lure Saban from the NFL "tells you the power of college football."
Meyer was among those who noticed that Saban took a job after telling South Florida reporters he would not.
"I learned my lesson at Bowling Green," Meyer said. "I was offered a job and I turned it down. I was all set. They went like this and stuck a microphone in my face and said, 'Are you going to take the job?' And I said, 'No. I'm not going to take the job.' And then a few days later I got the phone call from Utah. So everyone was all [ticked] and all that. What's the best way to handle it? Now that you're older? It's 'No comment.' That's always the best way to handle it. Because I heard coach Saban say there's no way he's going to be the coach at Alabama."
Meyer has five years left on a contract that pays about $2 million a year.
I'm confused....didn't Urban do the same thing to Utah when he left for Florida? It doesn't seem like he learned much. I doubt he will even exhibit his leason learned when he eventually (possibly soon) leaves Florida.
I'm not going to go snoofing around for the exact quotes, but I recall Urban saying he was staying here (he had a verbal agreement on an extension). That's a great deal different than saying "I'm not taking that job".
Like a lot of people who are great at sales and self promotion, Urban seems to have a habit of believing his own BS.

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. It sounds like Urban was offered two different jobs. The first, he turned down and answered the question about leaving with a no. Then it sounds like Utah came into the mix with an offer and he couldn't turn it down. Interesting if that is how it happened.

I think Urban beats OSU and at least splits with Miami that year. Miami did NOT bring their "A" game when we played them at Oxford, but we pissed down our legs and let them roll us anyways. That was probably the worst game they played all year outside of Iowa.
In the championship game I'm not so sure. Our secondary could not cover their receivers and Ben was throwing it through that weather. I wasn't that impressed with Ben's throws that night, but given the conditions they were pretty impressive. He had guys WIDE open all night long.
Not sure if Urban could've gotten his team to put more pressure on, or cover better than they did anyways.
Still, the OSU game is the one that will always stick in my mind. It was that day I realized we screwed up with our head coaching hire, because we didn't play to win.
