It is still amazing to me how good this team actually is. I mean, I've been watching all of these players for a few years, and I still am amazed. There is something truly, truly special happening here.
Watching this team today it was entirely clear that this team is hungry, and their fans are, too. I kind of removed myself from being a fan of the team at one point today and just listened to what was going on around me. It was so cool to hear people screaming for the defense to hold UB under 10 pts, 20 pts, 30 pts, etc. throughout the entire game. I find it to be really cool that our fans get it - it isn't about scoring a million points, it is about putting your foot (figuratively, of course
One concern that I do have for this team, as a whole, is free throw shooting. Watching them in their last two games (Akron and UB), the team inability to hit the free throw is somewhat glaring, especially in comparison to how utterly competant every other aspect of the team's game is. I believe that this is a team that can have success in the NCAA tourny, but to be special in the tournament, I think they will need to be able to perform a lot better at the stripe. The cool thing - I am totally confident that they will be by the time March rolls around! Man I love this team!
On the whole, I am totally enamored with the ability of this team. I am grateful, also. I am grateful because, by simply watching this team execute, I have learned a TON about the game of basketball. I have watched men's college hoops and the NBA for my entire life, and the game of basketball has always seemed to me an exercise in chaos and anarchy. This women's team has shown me, first hand, that there is a method to the madness of basketball, and they have given me a much greater appreciation for the sport. That is a testament to the abilities of the players and the coahcing staff. I don't mean to insult anyone (though I know this statement will - my appollogies in advance), but I really don't understand how anyone who isn't a frontrunner or closed-minded (not in the PC sense) can't appreciate the women's game. It baffles me because this is great, great stuff!
