We didn't give Urban his break... no...
St. Xavier game him a break... and then UC gave him a break... and then OSU gave him a break... and then CSU gave him a break... and then Notre Dame gave him a break... the fact of the matter is that a coach isn't given breaks he earns his opportunities.
Giving someone a break is like saying... hey no one better wants this and you don't deserve it so we are going to give it to you and you should be greatful.
Lesson 2: Anything said in the media can be taken out of context, and you can't take what is said in the paper as his full comment about a situation. You folks are over analyzing a guy who cleaned house when he showed up, made the team competitive, and left it in better shape then when he arrived. What else do you want?
God I miss BG?
Stop having such a Napoleon complex about this and move along. Sometimes I wonder why s**t doesn't get done in the world, and I now realize its because people bicker about stupid s**t as opposed to just working hard.
GO GATORS!
GO URBAN!!

Wow. Kurt, I'm glad you posted. This was an eye opener for me.gerl4 wrote:I like to get on this website a few times a week and read what all of you have to say. There has only been a few things that have prompted me to post a remark or two, this happens to be one of them.
I played for Urban my senior year and I can say without a doubt that he is the best thing that has happened to BG in the past 15 years. Without him BG could still be where it was when I attended the school for my first 4 years.
Was I upset when he decided to leave? Absolutely. It was obviously the best move for him, his family, and his coaching staff. He has since become a top five coach in America and would do anything for a former player. He keeps in contact with me to this day and is always reminiscing about our days at Bowling Green. For anyone on this link to think that he doesn't care about BG or the people and friends here made here are crazy. We should be proud that he made his start at our school and that we all had a chance to see him coach.
If somone told you that if you left bowling green you would coach for the national championship in 4 years, all while having your family set for LIFE, having coach Gonzales's kids SET, Mullen SET, Drayton SET, Hevesy SET...would you go? KNowing that you left a program in 10 times better shape than it was when you arrived? Is there even a question? When he left the staff that stayed all got promotions, Beckman went to coach for a National Championship. Do you think that he would have gotten an opportunity to coach at O state with another 2-9 season under Blackney? Everyone benefitted from coach Meyer being here. SEBO center? I saw those plans drwan up on HIS desk my senior year.
I know that I am very proud to have met him and played for him, you all should be proud that he got his start at OUR school.
With all that said, we should all pull for that guy, because like it or not he put BG back on the college football map.
Hope all is well with you.

I'm not sure I was as clear as I could have been.Falcon Fanatic wrote:Wow, this coming from the guy who said Brown is beautiful...Traditions? ok.....Schadenfreude wrote:I think Christopher's instincts are sound. Uniformity, in general, is a pretty good instinct.
I know how attached we all are to the traditional logo, but I've always argued that the retail logo is artistically very good. They did an outstanding job.
So, if they put the retail logo on our helmets, I will be able to go along with that.
On the one hand, our current design is arguably the oldest in the MAC -- only tweaked once since 1982. That's another form of uniformity -- tradition -- that's worth arguing for. And it's simplicity works in the context of a helmet, I think.
But I can see Christopher's point -- with our helmets as they are, we are now waving three logos in the face of the public: Traditional, outlined traditional, and retail. It's a bit chaotic.
Also, on a related note: The outlined version of the traditional logo is no good, in my opinion. It's fugly. If moving to the retail logo helps kill the outlined traditional logo, that's a step in the right direction.
I'm neutral. I like our helmets, and if we stick with them, I'm good with that. Our hats have a good design; many fine Falcon teams have played wearing them.
If we make a switch to the retail logo, I would be okay with that, too. The retail logo is outstanding and I sense it will probably be with us for decades to come.
In general, I do tend to value tradition more than other people.
I recently acquired a brown football jersey, and it is one of my most prized possessions. I do believe the team should always wear brown at home.
I don't want field turf at the Doyt. I dislike the way they've monkeyed around with the hockey sweaters over the years, and rather wish they would have stuck with the Tootsie Roll gear they wore in winning a national championship. And I think, BG aside, Ohio University may have the best football uniforms in the MAC.
That's me. I respect tradition.
So for a guy me to be neutral on the idea of putting the retail logo on helmets (and, let's keep in mind, it is decidedly unconfirmed there is a movement to actually do this), is a testament to the outstanding job the university did in coming up with that retail logo. It is outstanding. It will stand the test of time in my opinion.
The absurdity of a Miami (OH) fan lecturing another school's fans about having a Napoleon complex is one thing.redskins4ever wrote:We didn't give Urban his break... no...

Comparing getting "opportunities" as a high school secondary coach and a college wide receivers coach to a Division IA head coaching job takes it to a new level of ridiculousness.
BG absolutely gave Meyer his break and yet he never misses an opportunity to say what a menial program we truly are in his warped mind.
