WMU Band

Post by rollalongFF0304 »

Was anyone else getting peeved by the WMU band this afternoon? Seems they just wouldn't shut up. Now maybe it's because they're all brass or directly across from the west stands, but these guys always seemed to be playing and it was always above our own band.

The kicker was when they played over the alma mater at the end.

That made me feel a little less bad about the dudes next to me who were harassing them at halftime.

Well, it probably just SEEMED like they were playing more, since they were technically only allowed to play when THEY had the ball.... which wasn't very often...

As for the alma mater, they actually started to play theirs first, if I remember right... and WE started playing over THEM.... *halo* and then they finished theirs, and waited until we were done with postgame before playing again. So don't bash 'em TOO badly.

(Also, incidentally, they're not all brass. They have their share of saxes, clarinets, and piccs... just a higher percentage of brass than the FMB does.)

They have those damn squeak sticks in addition to sexyphones in their band.

Actually...they had more time of possession than we did.

Well okay okay. But they didn't have as many WOOHOO-YAY-GO-TEAM type plays to get excited about and play songs for as we did... obviously.

BTW, my favorite band moment of the afternoon?

When was the last time an another school brought their marching band to BG? I was outside the stadium on the north end and started hearing drums, but our band wasn't moving. Suprised the crap out of me when I saw the brown and white. I know we have had highschobands visit, but I seriously do not remember the last time we had an opposing team bring their band.

Toledo brought a pep band of about 60-90 people to their game last year. Actual marching band wise though, I think WMU brought theirs the last time we played them at the Doyt too but someone correct me if I am wrong. It seems like there was a band here last year besides Toledo too because I remember going up in the stands to talk to some of the brothers of my fraternity. Toledo was placed in bleachers outside the South endzone the last time they came so I doubt it was them. Anyone else remember??

Last year Miami brought their band for the MAC Championship game. Western did seem to be louder but I credit that to their placement in the stadium. At the time they seemed loudest the wind was coming from the southeast, right where they were sitting. That being said, I still like our band in the North endzone. Many people I sit by (West side, on the 50, all the way up) have commented on how much they like having the band face the home side when they play. Western Michigan was very good though. I personally think each school in the conference should HAVE to send their band to at least one conference game per season.

Miami was who I was thinking of! Thanks Matt! I was thinking there was someone before Toledo but when I went over the schedule I didn't see any teams that would have brought their band except Miami. One of their band kids had a Freddie hanging by his neck from their trumpet with pins stuck through him. I remember trying to take that but he then pulled Freddie off and threw him over the edge of the stadium wall. It was a sad day for Freddie fans :(

If you remember, both UT and Miami brought pep bands last year. The last time a full band made the trip to a BG game was in 2000. That year, both the Eastern Michigan, and Ball State bands came here. I was having this conversation with a few people last night as well, so its fresh in my mind. Jeff

It was probably my ex-boyfriend. He plays trumpet in MU's marching band and was here last year. There are not enough bad words I could say about the boy. I will say the only reason I was screaming and yelling at MU's band with the rest of the crowd was because of my extreme hatred towards the boy. MU was the best place for him to go, because he is an arrogant a**hole.

But I'm not bitter...

They were saying that?? Aww, that makes me feel pretty darn good.

And I agree with others- I like our more audible new placement in the endzone... aside from the terrible field perspective (the ball could be at the 50 and still look like it's on the far 20)... and the lack of net behind the goal posts (I think the athletic program should buy us a new instrument for each one that is damaged by a football- the certainly have the money to have us rolling in brand-new brass... especially that Sebo dude!! We spelled his name on the field, goshdarnit!! Where is our generous donation??)

If we get permanent seating in the endzone below the walking level on the SAC (I believe this is going to happen), then that will be our generous donation :D

I think they don't have a net because they find it hilarious to see the entire band shriek, point, and duck for cover every time a football heads our way.
