Doesn't matter what Dakich thinks, and it certainly doesn't matter what we think. AA won't be getting a new floor. Ever.
Well, if a new convo center isn't in the books soon , I sure hope we replace the concrete underneath with something else.

Right now there is only one coach who is complaining about the floor. Now when I hear that the men's baskeetball, women's basketball, and volleyball coaches all have serious concerns about the condition of the floor, or what is under it than I will take this more seriously. If it is a problem with what is under the floor then why are we not seeing these same injuries in the other two sports that use the facility? Hopefully no one is saying the women's teams do not practice as hard as the men's team does.

Well, lets give DD some credit , the men are bigger and weigh more. The ladies just can't exert the kind of force on the floor the men can with them an excess of 260lbs and jumping hard and high enough to dunk. The volleyball team does do alot of jumping in fact alot more than the ladies basketball team I would say. It would be interesting to get Swigers aka Swaggy's take on the issue as someone who plays on it.

I'm not saying I agree with Dan, but your logic is a tad flawed. Volleyball is a different sport entirely (although they both use a ball and involve nets) and the athletes in women's hoops are considerably lighter than the men's version. They're subject to far less stress from the pounding up and down the floor the men endure.

Since we're casting votes on an alternate floors, I want to go old school with an orange shag carpet. We could cover the walls with a brown faux fur...like people used to put inside conversion vans when a tank of gas was well under the price of a cheap motel.

Pair this....

And you get this ....

Why would we not get a new floor? i am pretty sure there is a company in Lima or somewhere that makes them. I dont think they are that expensive either and it could be moved to a new facility easy enough.

I agree with the DD/falconboy side of this issue. The human body was designed to run on grass and dirt. It's easy to underestimate the importance of a hard playing surface on the wear and tear on knees and ankles, especially for those who have never played sports on a hard surface or who have never been runners. What might seem like a negligible difference actually matters MUCH to a 200+ lb athelete sprinting and jumping on it for 3 hours per day. Any avid runner will tell you that the difference between running on blacktop and concrete is huge. Take a look the materials used for indoor and outdoor running tracks. It's a GOOD thing that basketball players are given new shoes generously.

The women's basketball and volleyball argument is absurd. The men weigh roughly 100 lbs more on average and due to weight and strength their impact with the floor is FAR more intense. Volleyball players do not sprint, cut, stop abruptly, or pivet. This is solely a men's basketball issue.

Mike Maleske, Colin Irish, and Anthony Stacey all destroyed their knees in AA, and all were significantly hampered as a result. Name another MAC program that has suffered more from knee problems than BG has from those three alone. AA isn't necessarily the reason for these three, but it may very well be.

If the floor is that bad, why hasn't it been replaced in the last million years? And if it hasn't been replaced in all this time, what makes us think it's going to get replaced now, near the end of AA's life cycle?

I'm not saying a new floor isn't a great idea, or that it wouldn't probably be beneficial for our players. I'm just saying it's probably not going to happen.

How long did it take them to fix that busted bleacher by the top of the home 3 point arc in the student section?

It looks like you answered your own question. Also, how long did it take to get a sound system that didn't suck?

I'm not sure if the floor needs to be replaced as much as it needs a softer surface beneath it. Now, this might be more expensive than a whole new floor, given that AA's floor is the same continuous floor that leads to the lobby, north exits, and lockerrooms. It might take a lot of effort to bring up that entire floor, put something underneath, and then re-lay the floor.

Most new floors are portable... so a new floor in the current Anderson Arena could be moved to the new playing building if/when it is a reality.

Personally, I think it's a stretch to think that playing on Anderson Arena's floor does more damage than playing on asphalt or concrete in the summers and the off-season or at the Rec on the resin surface or.... Then again, I'm no expert, so why am I even commenting?

Maybe he's just lobbying for one of those rubbery floors that were all the rage in high school gyms in the mid-80's... :-D

Was there such a floor at the Rossford High School gym? (oh wait... wrong website.)

Sorry for the late arrival to the subject.......

Wood is considered a resiient flooring material. Obviously the give will be related to the underlayment. I would be hard pressed to believe that AA's floor is directly on concrete. There is probably some sort of underlayment between the wood and the concrete. If not, a new wood floor could easily be installed to without much hassle.

As the link shows, the newer floors are furred up off the concrete salb to allow more resilence. (bounce and give to you layman).

Standard wood floors cost around $10 per SF installed. The underlayment assemlby will add to the cost of a new floor at AA, but not enough to keep it from happening...... I am guessing, $15/SF. We are not talking about a large amount of money. Maple is the standard material used.

Worst case scenero - The floor size would be 50 x 94 (ft) with 10 feet on all sides or 70 x 114 (ft) = 7,980 SF x $20.00/Sf = $160,000 (high end). Who would be willing to donate, $200,000 to have the court named after them.......Mmmm....... Cummings Court at Anderson Arena.

Not at the Rossford High School gym, but the Rossford Junior High gym had it.
