We lose at home by 20?
This is just unacceptable. Whatever optimism I had for this year is quickly going away. Akron is pretty good, but they are not THAT good. Perhaps this IS another throw-away year?

After BG took a 44-43 lead with about 15 min left, the Zippies outscored the Falcons 40-18. It was men vs boys after BG took the lead. And we didn't have the men, either. Ouch.
Doesn't get any easier. BG hosts Miami and travels to Kent next week.

To be fair, I thought Akron was pretty darned good.
I thought we played so poorly and uninspired in the second half though... ugh. Our defense was what keyed us over and over in the first half, getting turnovers and pushing the ball in transition, but once we took that 44-43 lead... I don't know what happened. Seemed like we were stuck on 44 forever, didn't it?
Akron's string of 3 dunks in a row was... well, it was humiliating. I was encouraged by our play for the first half though... second half, not so much.

We still don't rebound.
We still have long stretches where we cannot score.
We still leave capable players languishing on the bench while terrible players get double digit minutes.
We are still not as athletic as the other top MAC teams.
We still cannot beat a press.
Those were the negatives that I saw today...what was worse than all of that though was the team just totally QUITTING in the 2nd half. Don't see that from a Dan Dakich team very often...they got down 10 and just totally gave up...the 2nd half defense was absolutely pathetic.
Miller played a pretty good game today. Hamblet also played a pretty good game today. Samarco had a ho-hum 20 points where it never really seemed he was lighting it up, but when it's all done he had a good game. The rest of the team seemed pretty ineffective. Marschall had more retarded Marschall fouls. Dusan again played way too damn may minutes. Polk wasn't allowed to play until the game was over. Pretty much everyone else was on the court, but never contributed much.

Was at the game today... First game I've attended in many years....
Here's what I saw:
Eric Marschall commits the stupidest fouls I've ever seen.
I can't believe that D-1 college ball players couldn't figure out how to beat a freaking trapping defense.
Outside of Samarco, we have NO ONE who can hit an outside shot.
Why doesn't Polk play more minutes?
Akron was much faster and had much better scorers than we did.
I did see Coach Brandon at the game, chatting with some players.

Agreed. That is typical of his game, does it every time...he's worthless on defense because he fouls himself out of the offensive end.falconfan1999 wrote:Was at the game today... First game I've attended in many years....

Ask Dan...we've struggled with this for years.I can't believe that D-1 college ball players couldn't figure out how to beat a freaking trapping defense.
Hamblet, Sims, & Moten have all shown signs of hitting those outside shots, but haven't done so with any consistency. None of them did so today however.Outside of Samarco, we have NO ONE who can hit an outside shot.
No clue. Dan apparently doesn't like him. He is a decent post defender, among the league leaders in blocks even with limited minutes. He's not a terrific rebounder, but he's as good as anyone else on the team. He's not an offensive threat, but neither is LeFeld or Larson who are taking his minutes. Dan said after the Buffalo game that he finally got smart and put Otis in, then he goes back to not playing him today until the game was over...no clue. Why doesn't Polk play more minutes?
Very true. They are still more athletic than we are. Still, in the first half the difference wasn't that noticeable when our team was playing tough defense and forcing turnovers we were able to generate plenty of fast break opportunities. Seemed our guys quit in the second half a lot more than they were out-athleted.Akron was much faster and had much better scorers than we did.
Credit should be given to Akron too. Seemed like every time we left them open they drained the jumper.
With all the talk of them out playing us, and leaving Polk on the bench, etc, the difference in the game seemed to be shooting more than anything, when I look at the box score.
Akron shot a hot 9-18 from 3 point range and was 14-16 from the foul line.
Conversely BG shot 3-14 from 3 (nobody made one but Martin) and was only 7-14 from the foul line.
That's a 25 point differential right there. I have to say as well that nearly all of our 3 pointers that we took seemed like open looks, so it wasn't like we were jacking up crazy shots.
Seems like when you look a little closer that they just made the shots that we couldn't hit. Still that stretch where they were dunking every possession was almost as pathetic as that stretch of 4 straight possessions without getting the ball past half court. Point is we did get outplayed in the 2nd half, but our shooting is really what doomed us. I love Nate Miller but we really need to teach him to shoot some FTs.
