BG News 3-part Story on facilities

It's a nice history lesson, but you're right Niz, I hope the next two installments shed a ton more light on the deal.

(Also, they didn't scrap the name Memorial Hall as the author mentions. The building is like a Reese's Cup, AA is the peanut butter to Memorial Hall's chocolatey goodness.)

But its hardly even a history lesson. Anybody who even really cares enough to be more than a casual reader/fan already knows all of that. I feel like I've been blue balled by this article.

To talk about the facilities we had to make sure that people who were reading understood how old they were and how little renovation most have undergone. It's a three-part series broken into "past, present and future," so hopefully the next couple segments will be of more interest to avid fans like you guys. Be sure to check out the PDF or copy of the sports page, which has early/construction photos of Anderson, the Ice Arena and the Doyt.

I think the Doyt was built in 1965 or 1966. Nice looking photos though. It'd be great if the series culminated with an editorial calling for a joint effort from the State of Ohio, the University and community to build a Convo center, renovate the ice arena and renovate the Doyt

Wouldn't a convo center eliminate the need for the Ice Arena? If not than I support that idea. I really like that the hockey team has its own place to call home right now and with all the recent additions and renovations that have been made it would seem silly to move them somewhere new.

Notre Dame's hockey team has to play in the worst place I have seen in my life. Its some sort of convo center that they convert into an ice sheet for a few months of the year. I would hate for that same type of deal to happen around here.

A convocation center would not have to have a sheet of ice in it. I would not want a facility that has both hockey and basketball in it unless it is a SEPARATE basketball court and ice arena under one roof. I do not think that is likely though. I would support a renovated ice arena that either maintains the current arena as the main sheet with a second practice sheet, or the current sheet is the practice area and a new main arena is built. I still want the convocation center for basketball, concerts, and convocation to be in the south endzone of Doyt Perry Stadium. It just makes sence to use that parking year round. Also, Falcon Club and bookstore areas could be built into the facility and serve both football and basketball.

The problem is... you still need the ice arena... its a functional facility and houses all of the youth hockey teams, ice skaters, and curlers... it doesn't make sense to have another hockey facility on campus... just a multipurpose basketball arena that can be used for graduation, concerts, and other special events.

You need two sheets of ice to operate an ice arena at the optimum level.
I don't think you necessarily need a Convo center with Ice, but I could see and expanded Ice Arena with more seating and a second sheet with some limited seating.

I want a Convo that can hold 7,500 for a basketball game and another sheet of ice built where the parking lot of the Ice Arena is. Construct a new parking structure to the South of the Ice Arena where some of the intramural fields are now. Finally, construct a parking garage in Lot 6 to help support the Convo center.

I agree with everything said here except for the placement of the second sheet of ice. If it is just going to be another practice sheet of ice then it should be built behind the arena and beside the tennis courts. That will allow it to be connected to the existing locker rooms easier. If it is going to be a new main arena then I still want it in the same place. I want the convo in the south end of the stadium and I could take or leave a parking garage in Lot 6 if there was a choice between one out there and one closer to the main academic parts of campus.

Parking garages on campus seem like a bad idea. I see accidents and car damage galore with that. I really don't think we need much extra parking anyways.

I like the second sheet being built behind the ice arena next to the tennis courts. I once thought that the intramural fields were really not all that important to the campus community, but I now realize without all that field space there may be rioting from the student body. The intramurals have to stay to give the hundreds of teams that play there a place to go. If they were going to add an extra sheet to the current facility, I would really like to see them give the entirefacility a major face lift; i.e. some flooring on the ground level in the North corners, that way we don't have to stand in puddles of dirty water from the melting ice to watch the game.

Cosmetics can play a role in the decisions of future students and athletes and with all this convo/sport facility talk going on there is a very good opportunity to upgrade some of the less than stellar parts of our beloved university.

Its totally true. There is plenty of parking everywhere on campus and in town. If one of the lots around the football stadium wa seliminated, I could maybe see limited parking for visitors becoming an issue, but I highly doubt it. Even if it did, all it would do is force the town to become more involved in the pregame atmosphere by using their lots for parking and maybe even hosting pregame events (I.E. heinegate and the danger brothers down in c-bus). I don't know about you all, but my heart swells at the idea of football being a community wide event on gamedays.

For me a parking garage isn't so much adding more parking than it is putting parking where it makes sence. Parking garages can add more green space or space for additional academic buildings. The University is growing and sooner or later appropriate use of the land we have will become a factor into what projects are undertaken. Going alone with the master plan, it makes sence to build parking garages closer to residential and academic parts of campus. I see three garages built, one by the physical plant, one behind Offenhauer, and one behind the health center. This opens up lot 6 for future development. Something like a hotel to compliment the convocation center in the south end of the football stadium. This would be an excellent opportunity for the students in the hospitality program to get real world experience. I envision something like the Kellog Center at Michigan State. A place where visiting athletic teams can stay, or parents, or convention goers that convocation center should attract. All of these require land to be available. and are revenue generating ideas. So I do not correlate parking garages with an increase in parking spaces. I see it as making the most out of the land we have.
