Gymnastics dropps season opener

Post by It's the Journey... »

The Falcons dropped their first meet of the season at Eastern Michigan by the score of 192.475 - 188.925. I don't have a score for the third team competing, Ursinus, but I will keep checking.

Here is an update on the rest of the meet. BG defeated Ursinus so they begin the season 1-1 and 0-1 in the MAC. They had to start on Beam which is a tough event no mater when it fall into the roation. NExt was floor, and Eastern's floor is usually about as soft as concrete so the first two rotations were tough and BG didn't score very well. Vault picked up and Bars turned out to be the strongest event of the meet. This is a young team and they will have to grow up very fast. BG has all 6 conference meets to begin the season. Besides the regular season conference championship, starting position at the championship meet in March is up for grapps. The higher you are in the regular season standings, the more selection you have for that meet.

Unlike other sports, just because you win the conference championship, tournament or regular season, a post season berth is not gauranteed. A team with a loosing record could end up in the National Championship meet. The country is divided into 6 regions. After the scores are averaged accodring to a formula the top 6 teams in each region compete against each other. The top 2 teams from each region advance to compete for the national title. This year the University of Utah is hosting. Utah is a powerhouse in women's gymnastics. They average 12000 per meet and have multiple NCAA titles. To give you a reference point into how tough our region is, last season our average score would have been good enough to compete in 4 of the 6 regionals. Instead, we were close to the bottem in our own region and stayed home.

I was a little confused at first seeing this thread in Other Sports, but I never realized that the Woman's Sports forum was changed to Woman's Hoops now. I'm so used to seeing other ladies sports combined with lady falcon hoops. Its all good though. :)
