I know very little about this particular recruit, who seems to fit a need, however, I feel that the current staff should hold off on signing kids until their status is resolved, one way or another. I feel we owe that to our "prospective" coach, to allow him to pick his own players, should that need arise.

This is a legitimate question. Beyond Flipper's response, I think that people who are generally winners in life are the people who have positive attitudes and continue fighting in the face of adversity. For DD to do anything other than continue fighting and operating positively would consistute giving up. How would that look to his players, assistants, and future employers?

DD's head isn't in the sand: he knows he's on the hot seat. So does Preston Burrell. If DD's gonna go down, he'll go down fighting. I respect him for it.

So then how the heck is that a legitimate question? In my opinion, it is completely ignorant for anyone to expect any coach to roll over and die at any time, and to espouse such an expectation evinces a blind hatred of the coach in question on the part of the inquirer/accuser. Perhaps my recation came off a bit too emotional, but I don't see how you or anyone can question the validity of the sentiment, especially based on what you just wrote.

It IS a legitimate question. It's premise is that it (a) is unethical to offer scholarships to a kid when you know you potentially won't be their to coach him, and (b) hampers your successor by limiting his options. THAT IS LEGITIMATE. I disagree philosophically with it's premise and explained why. What hatred? What ignorance?

YOU, on the other hand, spewed "ignorant" and "hatred". I asked you explain how those words apply, but you didn't. You just reiterated yourself. Exactly HOW was his post "hatred" and "ignorant"? You need to match those word directly to the text of what he wrote. I challange you to do this and make sense.

In a more measured vein...If DD doesn't recruit and ends up being let go the cupboard will be pretty much bare. Happened to UT years ago when Eck came on board-he was lucky enough to get Keith Wade, a great PG for the Rockets but the only other recruit was some kid from Pittsburgh who got shot in a dice game after playing one year -Ty Something? It was pretty tough to find any kind of decent talent that late.

Perhaps I should have mentioned my own experiences. I have not coached for long, others on this very board have much more experience, but if I'm in charge of any team, let alone a D-1 program, you can damn well bet, I want to chose my own guys rather than have a guy who I am replacing to choose them for me.

While there is no guarantee with verbal commitments and to my knowledge the said recruit would have the option to rescind should Dakich be let go, not the other way around, it's a dicey situation at best.

This has nothing to do with my like or dislike for Dan Dakich, but rather who I feel should choose the players. I feel that whoever coaches the 07/08 version of the Falcons should make those decisions. We have never been in a hurry to nail down top notch recruits before, why start now, unless it is vindictively motivated?

While the "talent" cupboard may be bare depending on your view of what we have, whoever inherits this program next year will be handcuffed for two years as 11 players (counting our latest addition) from the Dakich era will still be donning a Falcon uniform two years from now.

Sorry, but to me that isn't exactly a comforting thought. The new coach, if needed, would then start a complete rebuilding process two years into the job.

Given this information, I feel the new coach should have as many scholarships available to add "his" talent for "his" system.

I guess you and I are just working from two different premises (BleedOrange is off in his own world, as usual). You seem to be assuming (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that Dakich won't be back next year. I, on the other hand, am not certain of that and won't be until it is announced that Dakich will not be given an extension. I guess that is where the difference in our veiwpoints lies.

I appologize for the vitriol of my previous comment, but all of the constant, neverending talk about firing coaches in every sport at BGSU besides women's basketball has worn pretty thin with me. The "blind hatred" that I mentioned wasn't so much directed at you as it was at a few other posters around here who simply hate Dakich and want him gone no matter what. I don't even think I looked at your name in repsonding to your post and just jumped to the conclusion that it was one of those few (not thinking that our presumptions were simply not in line). It is funny, too, that hammb got his panties in a twit, as he is tops among those logical in the "Fire Dakich!" crowd, in my opinion.

Argh. I need a beer.

Sorry, I wasn't very articulate. What I meant was that the talent cupboard of high school players would be bare. Players aren't likely to wait for the last minute unless they are marginal recruits. A new coach would have littel opportunity to bring in any decent palyers in his first year anyway. As for stockpiling schollies-that would be an option for a new coach. I definitely try not to flame anyone here in any way shape or form and don't wan't anyone to think I was slamming the current level of talent at BG. Hell, your record is way better than ours so far.

It seems to me that bleedingorange is quite happy with mediocrity or simply likes the coaches on a personal level. In the 40 years that I have been a Falcon fan, I have never seen the three coaches of all the men's major sports be so bad. It hurts even more that it happens all at once. Let's face it, DD's teams will be DD's teams. He has had more than enough time to right the ship. His team will never win a conference championship. Looking at the most recent scholarship offer only verifies that. Hopefully, any offers he makes now can be rescinded when we get a new coach.

Besides, the only sport where two guys weighing in at a combined 600 pounds (Polk and the new guy) is cool would be professional wrestling.

Option...you're out to lunch on this one. Dan is supposed to not recruit now because it wouldn't be fair to the (as yet unkonwn) guy who may or may not replace him?

He's supposed to operate from the assumption that he won't be here next year while trying to get this year's team to play for him. Yeah, those kids will really want to work for a coach who deosn't recruit because he might not be around next year...maybe he should ask them ahead of time to help him pack this March...maybe they could help write the ad for the house when it gos on the market.

I'll bet the AD who get's to decide if he gets another contract would love that attitude also...

2 points

1. If Dan does not recruit, and is retained, what does he do then?

2. If we sign a second or third in command at a bigger school, that could mean that they pull some guys with them. Part of that guys role as an assistant coach would have been to recruit and build relationships. Every guy who he built a relationship with may not get a schollie offer to that school. Or maybe we yank a transfer already on that team or committed not getting the playing time they wanted. A new coach opens those doors. Last minute recruits might be gems.

-What if we added Cuonzo Martin. Currently Boilermaker Sophomore PG Bobby Riddell is averaging 5 mins a game. Or One of their freshmen bigmen Dan Vandervieren or Johnathon Uchendu both averaging under 7 minutes a game.

Deal. I quoted you because your quote answered your own question. Why should I waste my time trying to further explain the answer to your own quetsion that you, yourself, have already answered?

You of all people shouldn't be accusing anyone of dealing out backhanded comments. You have made a career of that on this board.
