The day before the infamous scUM game last year, some buddies and I had gone up to watch the game at the Yost. While the game results were less than satisfactory, the pissing match that lasted the entire game between the scUM fans and us was great fun. Other schools fans are so creative 'BG-FU'. One fan, who greatly resembled a bumble bee, shouted some profane allusion to seeing us tomorrow night so we waited for him to leave then followed him all the way to the parking lot singing: "I'm bringing home a baby bumble bee". The best part was seeing him completely torn apart after we won the next night. I went over and talked to him about it after the second period, and told him if he had any balls whatsoever, he would stick it through the end, just like we did the night before. He didn't.
My Freshman year Goofyeuph, a buddy of ours dubbed Turkey (because of a terrible night with a certain whiskey), and myself traveled to East Lansing for a game. On the rare occasion of Jordan Sigalet having an off night, the team was annihilated. We remained stalwart throughout the match however much to the chagrin of all egg suckers around us. The were so taken aback by our 'see ya bye bye jackass' that one fan decided to come up with his own, decidedly less effective version of 'buh bye, see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya'. Some students traveled all the way across the arena just to give us sh!t and we had the ushers take away his cowbell. He then proceeded to taunt us and we asked who their candidates for hobey baker were this year. While that stunned him, he still pressed on and finally we asked him if they were going to enjoy their bowl game that year, this sent them packing. Finally the spartans called in their last hope, Sparty. He started beating his chest like he was macho, so Turkey looked him dead in the eye and said "That's right, you are gay." Falcon fans 10, city of east lansing zero.

I just remembered something else from this season's earlier Michigan game. Minus the drubbing we received, the student section attempted to get a female Falcon fan to....ahem....let her Falcon's fly by doing a "Show your t*ts!" chant. When she didn't do so we got a "You're a b*tch!" chant.
Michigan are awful, awful people.....but this perverted 21 year old was cracking up the whole time, because at that point I was looking for any humor from the situation I could.

Childhood...
I had to break my favorite memories into sections, or else I would be writing a novel. Here are some of my favorite childhood memories...
* "Wally...Wally"
* Filling the arena, people sitting onthe steps, watching us battle our REAL rivals in OSU, MSU and LSSU. NOTE: I did NOT say Michigan! They were not a rival back then!
* Heckling the CCHA's version of the Hanson Brothers...The Pooley's of OSU!
* "GO HOME BUCKS!"
* "GO GREEN, GO WHITE, GO SUCK AN EGG!"
* Watching Ron Mason freak out and try to go into the stands after our fans.
* "Stick...Stick...Can I have a stick?" Standing next to the ropes with our hands out trying to get a game stick from a player. We were up close and personal in those days!
* Playing on/around the track mats.
*Learning my first cuss word when it was being chanted by 3,000 people. "BULLSH*T!"
* My first crush-Brian McKee! Talking about him non-stop, so my "boyfriend" hated him! Give me a break...I was in the 3rd grade!
* Our annual trip to Joe Louis Arena.
* Everyone staying at the Ren Cen.
* The feeling I got every year walking from the JLA parking garage through the tunnels to the doors. It seemed so big and crowded back then.
* Lemon suckers and Gino Cavallini
* Hoping to grow up to be taller than Kruzer!
* Waiting around the locker room door as our parents waited in line in the lobby to get tickets to the Joe.
* "One minute to the Joe! ONE MINUTE!"
* Watching the NCAA Championship game- the only time I've seen it!
* Welcoming the champs home in the ice arena late at night.
* The "little brothers" at my school all getting mohawks too!
* The team visiting Conneaut and us having an assembly because of it.
* Tom Glick's announcer voice
* Being on PASS sports with our "Choke" sign.
* Being a member of Freddie's Friends. I still have my membership button!
* Trying to decide which shirt to wear to the games...
Choice A) "National Championship Shirt"
Choice B) "When the puck drops, the bullsh*t stops!"
Choice C) T-shirt iwth a falcon flying over rival players dropping puffy paint "gifts" on them.
* Drawing faces on the pictures in the programs and reading the "bios" in the back. Yes, we had REAL programs back then!
I'm sure more will come to me...but this is a pretty good start, I guess. Teen Years, College Years and Adult Years still to come!

I forgot about the celebration at the Ice Arena after our title. I can still see Garry Galley and Dave Ellett sucking on those HUGE cigars!
Another funny thing was all the times Brett Harkins parents used to berate the media after a game in which he did not get an all important game star.

1978 BG vs Colorado College NCAA Qtr finals and the party at the Country Club afterwards
Nov 11 2005 at Notre Dame
In 1982- 83 season or was it the 83 -84 season. BG was # 2 in the nation, OSU was # 1; the game played at BG.
We spotted them 3 1st period goals, and came back to win. OSU has never been the same since then.
March 5, 1989 vs scUM, third game of a best 2 out of three CCHA playoff.
Rob Blake scores over time goal at Michigan.

Were you at that game? I was and it was pretty awesome celebrating like that at Michigan. It was probably the last great moment in BG Hockey history.Puckhead wrote:March 5, 1989 vs scUM, third game of a best 2 out of three CCHA playoff. Rob Blake scores over time goal at Michigan.
I remember a similar situation at Western Michigan when we won a playoff series. There is nothing like celebrating in another teams rink.

Ah yes... I remember it well.FlagCityFalcon wrote: Ah yes, the fight with OSU at the 60:00 mark...that one I won't forget...both teams and the coaches on the ice....that night I learned (cemented) the fact that Markell is an a$$...those of you who know me I think know the story! It was classic!
Odd thing is, I had friends come to the game that night. It was their first BG hockey game and their only one that season. Two of them had never been to a collegiate game before and asked me what to expect and I said, "Well, about the only thing I can guarantee is that you won't see a bench clearing brawl."

That was a triple overtime win too!!! Weasel fans went nuts saying he had high sticked it in, but the ref said it was a legit goal!! I think I lost my voice screaming at that game!!! Any one else remember when Pierrick Maia's leg was broken up at Yost? It broke at the top of the boot...ugh!! It happened right in front of us....FindlayFalcon wrote:That was an amazing night!!Puckhead wrote:March 5, 1989 vs scUM, third game of a best 2 out of three CCHA playoff.Rob Blake scores over time goal at Michigan.
Regarding that OSU game when Lune got into it with the OSU player in the tunnel, we were sitting directly across from the tunnel. When they sent them off the ice, I immediately thought, "What an idiot...those guys are going to get into it in the tunnel!" Then just that quick, THEY DID!!! We all stood up and started yelling and pointing toward them, when someone finally got a clue and separated them!!! It was pretty funny!! Other memories to follow soon!
This is a GREAT thread, btw!!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

It's hard to pick out one favorite memory, but there is one constant;
Gut On Glass.
OH man. For those of you who recall a whole horde of guys/gals who would sit in the NW corner of the arena and put their guts on the glass as the Zamboni would go by in the 1st intermission, you can thank us for that. I don't really know why, but thats just what us band kids do. Ahhh... memories.

Wasn't a goal by him already disallowed in that game because of an illegal stick? Or am I thinking of a different one?Falcon Fanatic wrote: That was a triple overtime win too!!! I don't really have a specific game memory but for a kid like me that grew up without hockey, I was awestruck at the crowds the Ice Arena got in the 80's. I clearly remember standing in line for 2 hours before the doors opened to get a seat. I can remember smoking cigarettes in the hallways during intermissions. I was only 18 and didn't turn 19 until 1/2 way thru the school year my freshman year (1986-87). Couldn't get into the bars right away so my friends and I from the dorm would go to the hockey games.
And even thought I still have much to learn about the game, I got hooked on the speed of the game.
Beating OSU last season 2-0 was one of the best moments for me. Just because, well, it was OSU. LOL!
