Recruiting Branching into Maryland?

Post by Flipper »

I know we've had some Maryland guys before, but I couldn't resist the pun.

From some paper somewhere online...

Also at Seneca Valley, two linebackers will choose among Division I suitors. Fred Branch appears to have narrowed his choices to a pair of Mid-American Conference schools, Buffalo (N.Y.) and Bowling Green (Ohio).

I think Rivals has him at ** IIRC....

Temple's Rivals page has him with no rating and choosing between Temple and Kent State.

Flip, You're right about the Md. guys...(see BJLane), but I'm a bit stunned at how FEW OHIO kids are even being mentioned as interested in BG, or at least considering us. Perhaps the outflow of coaches has led to this as the recruiting has to be affected...but we're only listing two Ohio kids so far, and one of those (Brown) is now listed as a "soft verbal".

I'm not sure Flipper ever gave anyone a soft verbal.

Hmmm...probably not a good idea to tempt me to break out my "editing" pen.

you'd be amazed at how many times a single person can post "I'm a slow learner" in a single afternoon :-)

the only thing we should be recruiting from ohio is linemen, everything else should be down south. thats where u get the speed and better athletes. I love that we have so few ohio kids because I've said it before and I'll say it again, Ohio high school is way overrated.

And you've been completely wrong time and time again, yet refuse to believe it. Ohio HS football is among the top 5 states in the country. It is full of top tier athletes. Perennial top programs OSU, UM, and ND make a killing with Ohio HS talent, and there are plenty of other kids that head to other big 10 schools and all the schools of the MAC.

and what happens when those schools play teams from down south, michigan: got killed, notre dame: got raped, osu: got bent over then had it stuck in the butt because they couldnt keep up. in the mac, i would rather have a great athlete than a good football player because great athletes in the mac dont come around that often.

Moneymaker,
I've got to agree with Hambb on this one (and I haven't agreed with his views on grass vs. field turf).... but you MAY have a point in that our focus in Ohio might be better spent on quality lineman... OTOH, guys like Josh Harris, Steve Sanders, PJ Pope et al.... seem to have come from a certain "northern" state. Bottom line is that I'm very concerned that we only have TWO Ohio kids at the present time...perhaps there are others that haven't announced yet, but with the signing day only about 2 wks away, I'd have expected to see more announcements from the kids and/or schools by now. Glenville HS in Cleve., for example, has been printing kids up in the PD for the past week or so...wonder if ONE at a time is deliberate on their part....and most of these kids seem to be headed for Big 11 schools, and NOT necessarily the Columbus branch.

I don't agree that BG shouldn't be recruiting Ohio. There are a ton of amazing HS athletes in Ohio...have you ever been to Canton or Massillon for the HS State Championships? It is a pretty site to see those teams play and the amazing athletes that are on the field. Also, when everyone whines about why we don't have good attendance, maybe that has something to do with it. There aren't a lot of local kids on the team. If you start recruiting kids from w/in driving distance, their family and friends just might come and watch the games every weekend.

But the thing is , around here there aren't that many real good Div1. quality football players. If we could land the studs that do pop up once and a while that fine, but really all the great talent in Ohio is in the eastern and NEstern part of Ohio.

There are kids from around here that sign with Cincinnatti and Miami U all of the time. You'd be surprised. Last year, four of the six state title teams were from w/in driving distance...BG signed no one from any of those teams.

????....what is "driving distance"?. did BGSu try to sign any of the kids on the teams you mentioned? Here in the Toledo area, Peris Edwards went to Miami...BG offered him, but he preferred Miami. This year, the kid at Central is signing with OSU offer BGSU and the bulk of the MAC, Jalil Carter was offered by UT and BGSU, but he picked Akron. In Perrysburg, that Oreo....whatever...kid has offers from UT and BGSU, but seems to be sitting on an offer from MSU.

Should Brandon put a gun to these guy's heads or just respect the decisions they make? I'm glad we have a network that allows to find good football players from a number of regions. With so much competition for the talent in Ohio, we'd be nuts to put all of our eggs in this basket.
