Ransom and Vrvilo

I talked to the AD at Trinity Valley tonight who happens to be the womens coach there. I asked about Ransom and Vrvilo tonight and this is what he said. Ransom had a great freshman year and had offers from half of the Big 12 and USC. USC came in and basically asked what it would take for him to come play for them after Bush decided to leave. He wanted to stay for his sophmore season. He had a bad first couple of games this year with a bit of a fumbling problem. They benched him for a couple of games, and then he came back and had a great last few games. The word on him is that he can break one at any time.

Vrvilo is a kid that has range from anywhere. My source told me that if we can get to the fifty, he can hit it. He said that in one game he was about to kick a 54 yarder, and he told the offensive lineman to jump offsides just so he could kick one from 59. He said that he had a kickoff after a 15 yard penalty go through the endzone. Vrvilo will kick it through the endzone every time he said. He said that Vrvilo will be playing on Sundays. I was very happy to hear those words about both of those kids.

i like the sound of that

with all this ground talent it looks to be a very different team i dont have a problem with using a heavy ground attack with short passes GB probably gets headaches having to make a whole new playbook though

I know I'm the resident optimist here, but ...

I have to say it's hard to believe a kid at a Texas JUCO would be offered a full ride to replace a Heisman winner at a perenial national powerhouse and turn that down. Not saying it's impossible, just seems, at best, improbable.

In regard to the kicker, this sounds an awful lot like the story we heard about Ryan Lux. Doesn't ring a bell? He was a JUCO kicker (out of California, I believe) who came to Temple in the waning years of the Wallace Error, oops, Era. The description was eerily similar - once Temple crosses the 50, they'll be a threat to score; opponents might as well not bother sending out kick returners, because all kickoffs will end up in the stands. Again, not saying Vrvilo isn't a good kicker. I'm just reluctant to expect him to be Adam Vinatieri out of the gate.

87, I thought the joke was going to be that Temple never made it to the 50 so no one ever knew if the kid could kick it that far or not.

I'd be happy if Ransom had great speed and good hands, and I'd be very happy if the kicker can get near half of his kicks in the endzone and be reliable from 40 yards in on field goals. Adding just those two components probably gives us two more wins.

orangeandbrown - agreed. I'm just saying it sounded a little hyperbolic. You know what they say, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I'd be happy if our kickers actually had the opportunity to get their kicks off without the defense arriving at the same time the ball did!

Of course an AD is going to talk up his players at a two year institution, it's basically his job to try to get his athletes transferred to a bigger school for their final two years. While I think his claims are largely overblown, at this point of the game I will certainly take a kicker who has confidence in himself and who has proven at the collegiate level (not D-1, but still collegiate) that he can succeed. It's important for us to have guys on special teams with thick skin considering with what happened to Rojas and Ellis, so hopefully this kid can get the job done.

As far as Ransom, he'll undoubtedly compliment Bullock/Macon and hopefully give us just more weapons to use in the passing game.

My sentiments exactly its a little hard to believe. But if USC and some B12 schools were truely after him then wow.

They're already signed, sealed and delivered. Laying down phony bravado now would only weaken his reputation if proven untrue. He definitely means what he says.

Thank you Joe. The guy that gave me this information isn't the type of guy that is going to give me a bunch of BS. The kids have already been signed and enrolled. What does it matter to him what another women's basketball coach in Texas thinks of a kid. I'm just one of the guys that he goes out drinking with when we are recruiting during the summer in the same places. I really hate how some people on here are so skeptical that when an outside observer gives information on upcoming players, you dismiss it like it's a bunch of BS. Seriously, give me a break. I try to use my connections to get some info to report back to you guys on a couple of players that are now Falcons, and you guys want to find the dark side of it.

I certainly did not intend to "dismiss it like it's a bunch of BS." I also am not looking for the "dark side of it." I was merely cautioning that reasonable expectations should be employed.
