BG loses 4-1 to Northern...Again
Re: Hey JP
Welcome back, bigdog. I was concerned that something had happened to you. Considering the way our season has been going, I would have thought that you would have been relishing the opportunity to rub our faces in daily doses of "I told you so" posts.bigdog wrote: Not only does Pooch suck at coaching but he breaks NCAA rules all the time. The stats speak for themselves. CCHA ranked DEAD LAST in: Goals Scored, Goal Allowed, Power Play Conversion, Shorthand goal scored AND shorties allowed. 11th out of twelve in: penalty kill pct and home attendance. It's been like watching a train wreck in super slow motion. Anyone who's not , at least CONSIDERING the POSSIBILITY that the responsibility lies with the man behind the bench would have to be a congenital idiot.
That said, I must ONCE AGAIN call you out. I am freaking sick to death of the unsubstantiated, non-specific and, frankly, gutless crap like "not only does Pooch suck at coaching". Few of us were blessed with the skills or talent to play the game at this level. You claim to have been there. I would have to assume that you have had some good coaches during your career. What SPECIFICALLY does this coach do (or fail to do) that causes these type of results? You and your cohorts have been asked this question (in one form or another) dozens of times over the last several months... and all we get is more of the same..."Pooch sucks". Enlighten us, please.
There's GOT to be more to it than the same old whines of "he works us too hard". Most of what Pooch knows about coaching is what he learned under Jerry York. York was and is sucessfull at this leval, as was Herb Brooks... despite the fact that both have/had reputations as brutal taskmasters who are/were almost universally disliked by their players.
Pre-game preparation. Defensive zone strategy. Line pairings. The 'X's and 'O's. You know more about this stuff that we do. Teach us, O master.

To be fair, I have gleened quite a bit of information from prior players. It hasn't been one post or a series.Freddie wrote:Welcome back, bigdog. I was concerned that something had happened to you. It's been bits and pieces which I've been able to stitch together an idea of what is going on with the program. Granted, it hasn't been the details you seek, but I believe the problems are more deeply rooted.
Do I think the coach is solely at fault? Nope. I do believe he - and specifically the current situation - share a good deal of fault, but he's not singing the blues solo. I believe is is a good deal of blame to spread around.
Blame doesn't matter at this point. Pulling this program out of the ashes is what matters right now. What's most frustrating is that I have ZERO say in that. I can just back the program as best I can. I'm a fan. It's what I do.

Honestly, I thought about writing the I told all you posts. But seriously it is past the point where that would even make me feel a glimpse of happiness. I just feel so sorry for the players, another year of BG hockey wasted.
Go back and check the previous posts and you will see many examples cause there were whole threads dedicated to them. Its funny though with all that has happened and me being the only one who predicted it, or at least the only one who would bluntly write it on here. There is still doubt with what I say.

I didn't go through and read every single comment, but I think it's not all because of the coaches (though I do think we need a new coach). I also think it's because these guys haven't been playing together long (most of the significant ice time goes to freshman) and it takes time to make a good hockey team. I don't think we're horrible. I just think the other teams are better. I'd give it time. I'll still be at every game sitting in the front by the glass and cheering for my Falcons.

In the long run ...
It really doesn't matter who you blame. Bad coaches, bad players, bad facilities ... whatever. The whole program from top to bottom needs to change and that won't happen overnight. It is now obvious that a new coach is needed, but even if Scotty Bowman himself were to materialize behind our bench this weekend, it wouldn't change much immediately.
Still looks like we're going to have to wait it out this season. Find a new coach and hope he can start our getting current guys to do what they need to do. After that, we can start worrying about recruiting some fresh talent.
We are pretty horrible. Getting back to respectability will be a process.

Bigdog I agree that Pooch is not holding his end of the bargain but at the same time even a strict hockey coach does not control his players as much as in football, and basketball. Hockey is largely a read and react sport, The coach isnt botching every odd man rush. The disgusting PP% is part the coaches fault but on the flip side its tough to score with any system when nobody on the team can finish a scoring chance.
Im sorry to say but you as well as 90% of our guys this year are not quality DI players. Last year we had some scoring but many of those forwards were terrible in the D-zone which lead to many of our top gus being -10 to -20 in the +/- category

there was good scoring last year, and I agree that the coach can only do so much but I think that the problems stem from him. So it would be a good place to start the housecleaning. Not sure about the players as I haven't seen a game, I am basing my thoughts on what I have heard from players.
