I'm glad we can go and find talented kids in Michigan, Florida and elsewhere so we don't have to offer a bunch of Ohio kids who don't have ay other d1A interest.

I do believe there have been years where budgetary constraints forced us to to do just that...

Rivals now shows Johnson as a BGSU commit. We're really adding some size on the DL...it would'nt shock me if some of these guys wound up on the oline...we don't seem to be addressing that need so strongly this year.
I'm glad we can find out of state talent too. I just wish that our hit rate on in-state kids was a little higher than it is. Perhaps it's unrealistic to expect BG to land kids over the likes of Indiana, Northwestern, and Cincinnati, let alone MSU, Iowa, W. Virginia, and BC on a consistent basis (although I'm not sure this has to be the case). But, I do get a little disheartened when teams like Ball St., Miami, and Marshall grab top Ohio talent over us.

When the team starts to win and become a cohesive team again, the Ohio kids will come back.

It's not like this is an ongoing organizational problem.

Yes...if this represented a long term trend I would agree it's a problem. I'm not going to get too bothered by us getting a small (one is a small number) of home state kids one year.

The Ohio kids we missed that I would have loved to get were Charles Brown, the QB Clay Belton, and WR Tomaz Hilton.

We'll see if Adrian Hodges, Raymond Hutson and (if he signs) Nate Brown can make uop for them...

I am baffled. Someone please help me. If the list is correct, we now have five DTs in this class. We already have Hardwick, Rheam, Minturn, Young (all sophs to be) and Nick Davis coming back. That is five returning players, two of which were hurt. But still, five players who saw significant time and didn't do too bad. Now we are adding five more players. This doesn't seem like the biggest need area on this team. Checking the roster, it looks like we have seven returning interior def lineman. Why are we going after so many DL???

I ask this because it seems like Brandon hasn't done a very good job of recruiting year-to-year where you have an even amount of players of each position in each class. We went overboard on DBs the last two years (we have like 15 soph/jr DBs now). Now this year its DL and RBs. We have a glaring hole at WR, and this was easy to see coming with Sharon, Sanders, etc leaving in 2005. Yet we had only three WR recruits last year (didn't he switch one of them to LB too?) and this year just two after Brown flipped to NC. We start 3/4 WRs but just 2 DT. Why are we not getting some WRs instead of DTs?

Looks like we should have had 16 returning OL. But two(?) left, so we're down to 14 and four of those will be SRs. There was 1 OL in last years class and 1 thus far this year. In two years we will be struggling to come up with 5 decent guys.

This just doesn't feel right to me. Am I missing something here?

Burrell has played some TE, Bojicic has played OG, At 6'-5" Johnson has the height to play OT here.... some of these guys may not be playing where the services list them.

I certainly hope so. But I am still concerned. How about this - ZERO DBs so far. Stanley is listed as a LB/S, but at 6'2", 210, I would expect he would beef up as a LB. We have 11 DBs on the current roster, 8 of them will be sophomores. Maybe some of those guys that played last year will get redshirted this year, but there needs to be more balance in the recruiting process if you intend to sustain success. It's like we are looking at one specific position or two each year, grabbing as many players as we can get, and hoping we get a couple decent guys.

Another example, between returnees and recruits, we will have like 12 RBs. Two of those are fullbacks, so that means 10 guys competing for one slot. We start three/four WR, yet we will have just 11 of these guys on the roster (and that is counting Barnes as a WR). Or 11 DBs for 4 slots, yet 18 DLs for 4 slots.

I am really scared about the OL. As it stands, we will have 15 OL on the roster. But 6 of them will be SRs. That means next season we will only have 9 returning OL. That is not enough depth. With Williamson and Mahoney transfering, I would have thought OL would have been a focus area this year. But what do I know? I'm just one of those internet gurus.

Wow, a guru? I'm just one of those "internet guys." I aspire to be a guru some day, though.

Allot of those DL can play OL and Alot of those RBs can play DB. Geter was all area DB I think.

And what I can see happening is that those guys play/redshirt this year at one position and then they get moved somewhere else. That waste a year of practice at a position where the kid isn't going to play.

Sort of like Barnes at QB last year.

And Winovich, and Dozier, and, and and...

I have little confidence in this coaching staff to find the best talent and get them here.

I have even less confidence in their ability to get the right talent into the right positions.

I have even less confidence than that in their ability to develop that talent to improve as they progress through the system.

Still since we are supposed to be uber-positive this time of year, I say:

Do you really think they are not giving this any thought, as far as depth and what position each recruit may eventually play?

I don't think we need too many db's as the depth chart last year was basically redshirt and true freshmen. Stanley will be a LB...I've seen video of him, he's going to be a damn good LB here. In one clip he returned a punt...a 6'-3 210lb punt returner?

hell yeah!!

This is shaping up to be a very good class...perhaps a shade below last year but a mile ahead of 2005. That 2005 class is really starting to look bad. If GB doesn't turn this around, we may look back on that class as the beginning of the end. There was some talent there, but a number of guys have either left or been leapfrogged by the guys from 2006. Wayy too many washouts in that 2005 class. Freddie Barnes and Bullock look to be the stars from that group.

2004 was pretty good...2003...well, it was the first one. Some nice players form that group but a lot of washouts.

the D-line Recruits.....

Post by Falconboy »

I'm actually glad to see some DT recruits finally. Now I'm guessing that a couple of them will undoubtedly move over to O-line but I hope GB keeps more of the good ones to defense as well. I'm still dreaming of the day were we can form a kick ass d-line unit. Its the basis for having a good all-around football team.

Besides bringing in these extra DT's could mean we can move guys like Ream to DE ,who played a very undersized DT position alot last year cuz of tons of injuries. I for hope Mack stays at DT or DE. But it is nice to see some of these listed DT recruits in that 275-280 range allready out of HS.

I agree with everything you said but I do have confidence in the athletes we bring in. I think we recruit well. We dont develop well or put people in a position to have success.
