What will happen first?
I don't really know where to put this, so I'll stick it here. I've been wanting to ask this question for several weeks, but I've been fearing a backlash. Now I don't care if there is one because this question is very valid and must be thrown out there.
Obviously I think there is a good chance the hockey team might not win another game.
But for the state of the athletic program as a whole right now I think we are in very critical condition. With the all the mens major sports in serious tail spins, and aging facilities, Im not sure what will happen in the future. I hope more non revenue sports dont have to be cut for this athletic program to survive.
I would hope that in 10 years we could add sports like lacrosse and womens hockey but right now that seems pretty far fetched.

I'd think that women's hockey would be almost directly related to what kind of ice arena renovations/rebuilding is done. Without two sheets, practice time would be a bear for two varsity teams along with the club teams and youth hockey, and being even less available for potential money earners like public skating and rental. I'd love to see it happen for numerous reasons.dannyk wrote:I would hope that in 10 years we could add sports like lacrosse and womens hockey but right now that seems pretty far fetched.

We definently need a 2nd sheet of ice for the IA, because ice time is already spread very thin. Between all the clubs and teams that use the ice and our club and varsity teams, its just crazy. There's usually public time on Sundays, but that's pretty much it.TG1996 wrote:I'd think that women's hockey would be almost directly related to what kind of ice arena renovations/rebuilding is done. Certainly if we were to try to add a women's hockey team (which I think is a GREAT idea if properly funded) than we would need a 2nd sheet.
You're going to need a nice big donation (possibly even bastardize it with a business) to get another sheet. State money is few and far between. However, I love the idea of a nice, new 6,000 seat barn.

The Athletic facilities are just fine. The ice arena can use renovation, but Anderson Arena, and the football stadium are great for the fans. As for the athletes, what more can they ask for? The Rec Center, the other huge athletic building, and the addition to the football stadium. Facilities are not the problem.
Winning programs put people in the seats and pay for athletic additions, and scholarships. BGSU athletic officials have forgotten that they must win to put patrons in the seats. That means bringing in quality coaches that can recruit quality players, keep the student/athletes, and treat them fairly. I'm not sure the coaches at BG in the men's sports have those qualites.
The real problem is the basketball and hockey coaches do not treat their athletes with any respect. The athletes are lied to on a regular basis. So much so they are not even allowed to speak to future recruits. We need to clean house.

Gut the IA, add more ice, polish the joint a bit. But leave the IA as the venue.
I can remember games again UM when you literally could not hear yourself think. Even mighty Anderson Arena can't be as loud.

I have my own ideas, but I'm really interested to know everybody else's thoughts about how a second sheet of ice will benefit the hockey program (considering this is a thread about what will happen first, the hockey team wins or the women's bball loses).bgsufalcon24 wrote: We definently need a 2nd sheet of ice for the IA, because ice time is already spread very thin. Thats pretty sweet. YOU'RE THE MAN!Goldwing wrote: We need to clean house.
Just remember that "cleaning house" means that a bunch of your friends are going to be thrown out on their pathetic arses by whomever replaces Pooch, so be careful what you wish for. Or have you not thought of that? Hmm...

I missed it all right. Damn concrete hurts like the dickens. At least I didn't lose any limbs trying to pull off a somersault.Bleeding Orange wrote:Thats pretty sweet. YOU'RE THE MAN!Goldwing wrote: We need to clean house.

I don't think that the hockey program will benefit by a second sheet, however I do believe that the university will. A second sheet allows them to rent more ice time which is desperately needed. It will also allow them to host playoffs (high school, travel, etc.) with a decent number of teams in a shorter time period (Tam-O-Shanter for example). This all leads to more income for the university. A single sheet of ice can barely break even. multiple sheets, however, can make money.pdt1081 wrote:I have my own ideas, but I'm really interested to know everybody else's thoughts about how a second sheet of ice will benefit the hockey program (considering this is a thread about what will happen first, the hockey team wins or the women's bball loses).bgsufalcon24 wrote: We definently need a 2nd sheet of ice for the IA, because ice time is already spread very thin. I'll agree with that. I think if we had a second sheet of ice there would be much more times for people that want to learn to ice skate better (i.e. me) to rent skates and learn. There would be more practice times for teams other than the university, plus times for different individual skaters. The times are too thin right now. It's ridiculous.BGFan wrote: I don't think that the hockey program will benefit by a second sheet, however I do believe that the university will.
