Tony on Doyt

Don't know why he didn't post this here himself, or maybe he did and I just haven't seen it, but TG1996 wrote a nice tribute to Doyt L. Perry on his blog yesterday on the 15th anniversary of his passing.

I gave a little mention yesterday, but after watching the "A Coach for Life" tape again and thinking about it during the day yesterday, I wanted to write more.

I like the symbolism that Doyt was born in 1910. Is that headstone in Oak Grove?

Yeah, he's at Oak Grove, along with seemingly dozens of other names from BG's athletic past. Would make an interesting walking tour, that's for sure!

Tony,

Man did you hit that one. I'll take Doyt L Perry over any coach, anywhere anytime. My parents were so fortunate to be at BGSU in the early 60's when he coaching. Class of 61 saw it. So did a few others here. Like you, how I wish I could have been to a game he coached. "Coach for Life" is a very emotional story. When OSU fans rave about Woody Hayes, I rave right back about Doyt Perry.

Doyt, you're the greatest....

I always enjoy seeing Stu Givens falcon head as I walk down Ridge Street.

Not to get too morbid here, but I took a few shots in Oak Grove when I first found Doyt's stone (under commission of TG1996). I found Sam Cooper's and another interesting one with the logo on it...

I don't think it's morbid at all. It's very historic. You could probably teach a "History of BG" class and teach most of the lessons from inside Oak Grove. And imagine the history of the town of BG is represented equally as well.

A cemetery is a celebration of life. There's a story or two or more to go with every marker. Several generations of my family are represented in Oak Grove, not to mention classmates and many other folks I've known through my life. It's amazing the excellent memories a walk through Oak Grove can conjure -- along with a tear or two.

I feel the same way, but some people are a little "creeped out by it." The other stones in my little gallery there are ancestors/relatives of mine. My grandmother was a Gibson. Personally I love cemetaries...

I didn't see Dr. Givens' stone there. Will look more closely next time I'm on campus.

Seems like every time Ruth & I were on vacations b/k (before kids), we'd end up in a cemetary - Ireland, France, England, Spain ... didn't matter. We'd always end up reading the headstones in some cemetary.

Donald Gibson's stone was always one of my favorites in the cemetery.

Surprised I didn't see a picture of the Olscamp's stone in your gallery.

I worked at the cemetery mowing, weed-eating, etc for most of the time while I was in college. I also designed the database system that they now use to catalogue the locations of every grave. Not sure if they ever finished up all the data entry, but if they did they should be able to find you every stone in the place.

I was walking around there one day and looked for Helen Lloyd's headstone, but never found it. Maybe it wasn't up yet, since it was probably the fall after she passed. Absolutely phenomenal lady!!!!!
