Game, Set, SEASON
Personally, I don't think Hamblet is a better player than Floyd, and that's saying something.
I was no Floyd fan to be sure, but I'm not real enthused with Hamblet's play either. Floyd was very turnover prone, but at least he'd get some assists to go with it...Hamblet is absolutely NOT a PG. Floyd was a true PG, but a poor one, Hamblet is not a true PG. He's more of a combo guard that can give you 7-10 points a game. I do like his perimeter defense with his long arms better than anything Floyd could provide.
I think Guerin might be better than both of them as far as a true PG is concerned
Regardless, we will not be winning anything with any of those 3 guys as your starting PG. This team needs a PG BADLY.

Getting back to the topic of this thread...
Did anyone hear Dakich's comments after the game? He truly sounded like a defeated man. He was practically speechless trying to explain what happened. Lots of ums, and dead air.
On top of that, I have always felt there could be some tension between him and Todd Walker some times because Todd would ask a decent question and Dakich would fire back something that totally disagreed with the point Todd was trying to make. Well, today Dakich finished what I would call a terrible interview by thanking Todd for all his hard work and taking the time to talk to him before games, etc. To be honest, it sounded like a 'good-bye speech'. I got the feeling he was on the verge of pulling a Blackney and resigning right there on the radio.

Needs for bg basketball:
A true point guard: Hamblet is long and athletic, but does not guard quicker guards well and does not have the quickness to create assist opportunities for teammates. We need a point guard that can shoot a consistent 3 and who can breakdown a defense with the dribble to create assist opportunities. Even though i cant stand Akron or Toledo, they both have good point guards in payne and joyce who do what a PG needs to do.
Scorer: Samarco is a good shooter, but cant create his own jump shot which limits his game. We need a player who can create his own scoring opportunities and is consistent night in night out. Ron Lewis fits this nicely, but decided to be a buckeye.
Post Presence: Nate Miller is a beast of a player, but needs help in defending the post. We could use one more player like nate miller who is 6'9 with some blocking ability. Polk can block, but dakich for some reason wont give him minutes.
Shooter: we have it in samarco because he more of a spot up shooter than a consistent scorer.
Recruits: starts with getting some good recruits because akron, toledo, kent and ohio out recruit us with ease right now and we have to match their ability to recruit to win.

Goodbye
I'm thinking that we're losing Cheap Channel. I didn't get the Sentinel-Tribune until after the game, but Dave Hoerger is coming to WBGU-FM in May. The mechanics are in place that he will become the voice of the Falcons and BGSU will take back the play-by-play of games.hammb wrote:Thought the same thing Warthog. DD has a wife and kids and is facing a lot of career uncertainty right now. Not only that, his situation is very public. I feel for him. It is a nightmare life situation that I've never been in and work very hard to avoid. When he chose coaching for a career, he knew he was signing up for this type of risk, so hopefully he's prepared. This next month will be hard to watch. At this point, I think that we should all take it easy on him.

Uh, WBGU-FM is kinda difficult to pull in from Perrysburg. I despise Clear Channel as much as the next guy, but they've given our football team what is probably the largest radio network in the history of the program.HoopsFan wrote:I'm thinking that we're losing Cheap Channel. Horger is going to WBGU to do a community radio show. While I would love for Dave to get the BG position back, as Schad says, it is hard to imagine how we put together even decent radio coverage off WBGU. I do think that Clear Channel probably isn't getting what they expected when they signed on to be the Voice of the Falcons--losing programs that don't generate any interest. Throughout each of their markets, they could draw more listeners being on the OSU network. Even so, it wouldn't surprise me to see them continue, too.
But, I don't think the Horger moves constitutes "handwriting"

I don't think he will quit. However, I watched him walk up the steps, and he had a distant look, staring off into space, walking very slowly. He certainly looked down and defeated.Warthog wrote:Getting back to the topic of this thread...

Man...I just feel badly for Coach D. I was really hoping he'd get it going again. It was like watching Coach Paluch on STO the other night. He had big bags under his eyes and he looked like a beaten man as well. At least for one night, he felt awesome for beating UM.
I think the world of Dan Dakich. He's the type of guy that makes a great neighbor and friend.
When you really think about these guys and gals that coach our teams in fellow human being terms, somehow the wins and losses aren't as important. If this really is the end for Coach, I sure as hell will miss the guy.

Couldn't have put it better myself..right on! Unfortunately, wins and losses will be the demise of coach D...just ask the majority of posters on this site. I guess he shouldn't be starting the 5 players that practice the best all week, or he shouldn't be benching players for being late to team meetings and being late to team buses etc... etc.. etc,, all of those things were ok when he was 56-29 before leaving for West Virginia. I would be willing to bet any amount of money that his next head coaching job will be a resounding success..no doubt in my mind.

Except for Pat Haley, Dee Knoblauch, and, maybe Gary Blackney, I missed all of the coaches leaving in FB and BB. I was happy that coach L put together an awesome season to get out and get the worlds fair handed to him at GMU. I felt sorry for John Weinert when his wife was in such poor health and he hated the losses more than he enjoyed the wins. I missed Fran and Jaci when they left and I still visit with Fran almost every week after the games.Falconfreak90 wrote:Man...I just feel badly for Coach D. It's easy to sit in the stands and analyze what's wrong with the team and the coaching. Dan's "my way or the highway" approach to coaching fits Indiana where the recruits are plentiful, but I think in the MAC it's just not going to win any contests. We don't have a huge talent pool to draw from and we need every body we can get. It's interesting to look at the parallels of the Women's team to the men. Each player on the women's team can pretty much take over and light up the scoreboard. They constantly work for the open shot and any one is allowed to take that shot. What do the men do? Coach Miller has said that his players are more likely to get into something (I can't exactly remember the quote) but not the WNBA.
Well, I doubt that any of our players are going to the NBA, so maybe we need to put the best players on the court we have and play as a team. A couple of years ago, we had a couple of football players walk on to the court. Dakich would play them in the first half for some number of minutes, then ignore them on the bench the second half. I don't know if forgets, or someone pisses him off, or what. Maybe he needs a roster list
It just seems that he has never used his talent very well, and, yes, he might like to "reward" seniors, but he DOESN'T GET MANY players to be senors in his tenure.
Anyway, I know that in my job, if I make a mistake, I have to correct it, and what I did two years ago or last year doesn't work. It seems that coaching ought to be the same way. You work with the talent you have and adjust your play accordingly to the competition and injuries and who's having a good night.
Since this team is going nowhere, maybe it's time to give the senior 5 less minutes of playing time and bring in some of the younger players to get them some experience before the MAC torunament and for next year. Geeze, I'm kinda tired of seeing Martin shoot the ball and seldom pass.

Here in lies one my biggest qualms with Dakich's coaching. He refuses to adjust his style/plan no matter what transpires. For example, we will play man to man defense 40 minutes a game, 30 games a season, despite having one of the slowest, least athletic teams in the MAC. No matter how many times players get beat off the dribble, or how many fouls we commit because we are always reaching at guys as they blow by, etc, he will not switch to a zone defense. It boggles my mind how he does things like this.HoopsFan wrote:Anyway, I know that in my job, if I make a mistake, I have to correct it, and what I did two years ago or last year doesn't work. The story of the program can be summarized in the following Dakich quote from the Blade recap:
"We didn't come out with the energy [like] we displayed in the second half, and you can't do that when you're us," BGSU coach Dan Dakich said.
http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dl ... /702110372
Basically, he's saying that we're always undermanned due to defections, injuries, etc. and we have to play the game of our lives just to beat Eastern Michigan. The upper-echelon of the league can afford some off nights every now and then, but we have no margin for error.
The program can't be one where absolute perfection is needed every single night. It's impossible and leads to things like 2-9 conference records.
I agree with the others...it's ugly to watch at this point, and you feel for the people involved on a human level.
