Potential 2007 rule changes
How good is our new kicker? A new rule change for 2007, might be moving kick-offs back to the 30yd line, to reduce touchbacks, and in turn speed up the game some. (also proposing to change back the clock rules changed last year, while finding other ways to keep game time down). Will the game plan still be to hope like hell the ball makes it into the end-zone, and if not, hope like hell they don't run it all the way back

I like the college clock rules (well before they changed them last year). I think stopping the clock on first down makes for more drama towards the end of the game by allowing more late scoring drives.San Diego Falcon wrote:I still don't understand why they don't just adopt the NFL clock rules. Quit stopping the clock on a 1st down.
I don't have a problem with 3 1/2-4 hour games though...I like football

Don't mess with the rules when what has lengthened games is TV. I went to a Syracuse v. Army game a few years ago and there was no TV. That is, no local, cable, delayed broadcast, nothing.hammb wrote: I don't have a problem with 3 1/2-4 hour games though...I like football
After change of possession, the teams came on the field and the ball was blown ready and they started. Same after touchdowns, as soon as the PAT was over, the kick-off teams came on the field and were ready to go.
End result -- 2 1/2 hour football game. Sweet. It was just as much football as the 3-1/2 hour game, but without the dead time.

How many kickers can reach the endzone in College now? Hell BG and MIami were doing that Pop up kick where the opponent was still getting the ball on the 30 yard line last year... ugh what an aweful thing to do... pushing the kickers back another 5 yards!
Here are my ideas for speeding up college football.
1) Shorten Halftime to 15 minutes... in the pros it is only 12... so 25% longer is a huge difference!
2) Media Timeouts shortened to just 2 minutes total.... none of this stretching it to 2:15...2:20... or 2:30 seconds... CBS, NBC, ABC and ESPN always try to squeeze in those extra revenue generating dollars!
With just two easy steps... I have eliminted 10-15 minutes of "game time" a week.

Rule changes
One of the things I find amusing is that back when the rule change was put in that stopped the clock while the sticks were advanced, one of the ways the NCAA touted it was that it would actually lengthen games. They even estimated that it would mean an additional X number of plays per game, meaning more action. Of course that was before they started plugging in so many TV timeouts. It was also during an era when college teams were running the ball extensively (the wishbone and veer era of the 70s and 80s). The running game kept the clock moving a lot more than it does now.
Damn, but I hate the fact that just about every post I include on these boards makes it real obvious that I was born in the era of leather helmets and single-bar facemasks.

"No, it's NOT in Kentucky!"
