MAC assistant coaching departures

Post by JoeFalcon »

To recap:

*Miami's defensive coordinator left for an entry level position as an "assistant defensive line coach" in the NFL.

*Western's offensive coordinator became the WR coach at Minnesota, their defensive coordinator took a similar position with Stanford and their offensive line coach took a quality control position in the NFL.

*Northern Illinois lost their offensive coordinator to Georgia Tech and their assistant head coach to North Carolina to serve as an offensive line coach.

*Buffalo's offensive coordinator is gone and Akron's offensive coordinator had already left 3 months before the season to become tight ends coach at Illinois.

Basically, it isn't just us.

It's a point well taken, but until I see another MAC program have 5 departures, combined with as sharp a decline as we've seen here, combined with the player departures, I'll still believe we have serious organizational problems that go well beyond the normal issues that plague non-BCS schools.

NIU lost four coaches this year, WMU lost three coaches this year and IIRC, Akron lost four or five last year. Maybe it's closer to "normaL" in the MAC to lose a bunch of coaches because we don't pay that well collectively.

I think it just shows the problem in the MAC. We need to find a way to pay coaches better. Bakesales?

While I don't think things are going well with the football team in other areas, I can't blame these coaches for leaving. Most of them have gone on to positions that are better paying jobs. They might not be at great programs some of them, but the pay is better, and that is the bottom line to me. It's hard to stay at a place when you are offered more money. It's great to say that coaches want to stay because they love coaching at a school, but the money does the talking a lot of time in college coaching. That is why I am very surprised that all of our womens assistants have all stayed so long, when I'm sure they could get better paying jobs somewhere with the success that they have had.

Mac Coaches Moving On...............

Post by Falconboy »

Isn't this what basically keeps Mac schools down in a sense? The never ending Mac coaching musical chairs is what I think keeps any one Mac school or all of them from upgrading their programs to new heights. Losing coaches like the Mac in general does just stagnates any success any particular program might achieve.

Just think if Mac schools that do well and find their Urban Meyer's could actualy keep their coaches for 5-10 years , you'd see a much better Mac football conference across the board I think. Is it just me?

Thank you, Captain Obvious!

Part of being a non-BCS school is having a smaller bankroll to work with. It's all about the money and the BCS has a much bigger stream flowing than the MAC.

The MAC, in general has been sucking pretty hard, no question. But Akron lost its coach LAST year, and still sucked. Miami and UB were each 2-10, and we were half of their wins. WMU just finished rebuilding and its coaches are bailing for obvious reasons. Their coaches are leaving on a strong note. EMU is still too close to the start of their desired rebuilding to expect much churn there.

Its nit picking to some, but I don't see to much to take comfort in any of this. With limited exception, coaches are fleeing programs with issues on the field. There is no comfort in having something in common with other teams that suck. If other problem teams have coaches leaving, great, it means it happens when teams suck too.

Three teams in the MAC ended the bowl season with outright winning records. That isn't even 25 percent of this odd-ball 13 team conference. It is worse if you count our B@$t@d child member at Temple.

Take comfort? Thank you no.
