BG used a white "LT" logo on an orange helmet for the 1970 season. It disappeared from the helmet until 1981 when BG instituted the brown "LT" with the white center. That lasted through the 2003 season. The modified brown "LT" has been in place since the opening of the 2004 campaign.

So that logo has been in place - in one form or another - for some 25 years. To see that tossed aside saddens me.

I recall Bo Schembechler talking about his first press conference after being hired as the Michigan coach. After a few pleasantries, he'd thought he'd crack a joke. He said something along the lines of "the first thing we have to do is get rid of those hideous helmets." The room became immediately silent.

A few random history notes ...

:!: Iowa's helmets have been the same since 1979
:!: Aside from having #s, Michigans helmets have been unchanged since 1959
:!: Minnesota has changed the color of its helmets four times since 1968 and altered its design eight times during that same period, but the "M" has always remained.
:!: Ohio State hasn't changed their helmets since 1968

I dunno ... I guess I'm just an old fart.

Not to get all Mr. Blackwell and stuff, but white jerseys with white britches look like long johns or pajamas. Last season we took part in (and lost) too many pillow fights. I don't think we should look like we are going to a slumber party.

Since I am talking about style and design, two subjects I know nothing about, I will continue. I like the traditional, outline Falcon head, I like the filled in Falcon head and I like the new (sorta detailed, looks nothing like MU) Falcon head.

For some reason I think the interlocking BG would be good for baseball and softball but not much else.

Maybe we could get some sorta cool logo that's dirty if folded, ala the Land O Lakes butter lady.

If you need any more style opinions from a man with mustard on his shirt, give me a holler.

Does this mean you're buying butter on the way home? :D

If we could be as successful at football as they are at butter, we'd be on to something!

Furthermore, I think this really shows how much I miss having a good basketball team to get me through the winter.

The report was based on an interview with the assistant AD about the school's new athletic logos. The article also confirmed that the traditional logo is as good as gone aside from the football helmets. They are planning to ave the traditional logo completely phased out of all the bookstores and school stores by next year.

Meaning the traditional logo from the 70s will be gone or the new traditional athletic logo from three years ago?
Sounds like both to me.

BG News article

55 years of the "LT" Falcon? Is that right? If so, that's a lot more tradition than I figured getting apparently tossed aside. :(
Gee what a shock this is... I knew that this was where all this logo stuff was headed....it's going to be Space Ghost and nothing else. :butthead: This just makes me :smt078 !!!! I guess a lot of people have no freakin' clue what TRADITION means any more.... :smt093

I'm struggling with this butter lady business... What? When? Where? Why? How?

So stock up on the $14 Steve and Barry's jackets. And do as I did, find a few shops that will do the embroidery. My last few jackets, and some really nice button-up shirts look great. And frankly, its cheaper and you get what you want.

I think it sucks, but then so much about BGSU sports does the last few years. Its a move that was just waiting for a new AD, and based on my sense, this would be exactly the move he'd make. He can do it exactly because he isn't somebody with much time here.

IF he gets a new convo center built, if he gets the ice arena massively rebuilt and improved, if he fires two or three coaches and finds better ones, if he does much of the big stuff he is expected to do, then I can deal with the transition.

In any case, its a cool excuse to create a underground-old-school clothing company.

im all for it. i like our modernization...

i know most of the ppl here are "traditionalists" that prefer us to be the ncaa's mini-me of the cleveland browns..but i'm not a browns fan and i think we should be our own team with our own look. a look we're cultivating...which i think is the only good thing we've done lately it seems. the modern logo retains the spirit of the old one...but is a bit more refined (and anyone that thinks it looks like miami's look at the version i put on the helmet mockup on this thread...when its white it just looks like lines...like our old one. my thoughts here are known i think...and im sticken with em. keep the jerseys we have now...keep orange as our #1 color...switch to the new logo

I believe I am the only one who liked the idea of wearing the same unis as the Browns.

My preference has nothing to do with the Browns. If the Browns have the same uniform styles as us, so be it. I wish we would keep the traditional logo. I like the brown jerseys. I don't hate the retail falcon, but I think the traditional logo just plain looks better on the helmets we have. Furthermore, I think tradition is very important, and I don't like to see us tossing that kind of stuff out the window on a whim.

I know it's stuff that's been said before, but I just want to emphasize it's got absolutely nothing to do with the Browns, and I'm not someone who's been around the program a long time. I'm a current student who respects tradition and thinks the program should try to maintain at least some ties to its history.

Thanks Peregrinner. Well said!

The "we want to look like the Browns" angle makes about as much sense as "the new logo looks like Miami(OH)". Our unis match the Browns in color scheme and that's it. And again, for the billionth time, I don't care what any ignorant "fan" says about us "stealing the Browns colors", WE know the story and we should be proud about that, regardless of uniform styles.

My feelings on the logo and the tradition it carries are already well-stated. The end of the LT Falcon logo will be a sad day for BGSU.

No you're not.

The brown BG unis of the 80's (which look the most like the Browns) are classic.

even IF we know the truth the common viewer who is not a fan doesnt...and if we want to get some non-alumni or non-student fans we can't present an "inside joke" style image...like i said somewhere else...unless we run a disclaimer at the start of our espn games.

its not exactly the same but enough to hear plenty of comments

i think we need an image like we have now...the helmet logo thing isnt a huge concern since i like em both, but if..no..when it comes to switching to the retail i wont mind one bit. ill cheer for it.
