But I would argue this is out of Chryst's control -- unless we expect him to put on shorts and work on his post game, or something.

Chryst has put the MAC in position to be the Missouri Valley of college football. The programs haven't delivered -- for reasons that would seem beyond his control.

As for basketball -- I dunno. it is a tougher nut to crack.

I'll grant that the explosion of sports television has helped us in football. And, yet, it was an opportunity Chryst has seized. We have parity -- if not superiority -- with the WAC when it comes to air time. We blow the doors off the Sun Belt. Neither of these things were preordained.

I will agree the conference office has helped with press/TV coveerage. And it is true the teams have not produced on the floor/field, which the conference cannot control. But what is the price of opportunity? We whore ourselves to ESPN just so we can play games during the week and alienate our fan bases. Those in the conference office must have some sence of balance as to what is in the best interest of the MAC from an exposure point of view and what is in the best interest of the MAC from a fan/$$$ money standpoint. Currently, the scales are tipped all the way over to being ESPN's filler for week night programing in the fall. That's unacceptable. That's where our conference leadership needs to pull their heads out of the sand. It seems the MAC was so desperate for more TV time they sold the cow for a few magic beans. It has been like this for a while and without positive results. The scheduling thing only exhadurates the point. I am way past running short of patience with the MAC office. Right now positives are becomming negatives and negatives are piling up.

My Question on this one?????????

Post by Red Wing Fan »

Why did we not stay on the floor after the game to shake hands with the other team? It seems to me that if this display of good sportsmanship that ALWAYS follows our games in the MAC would have been followed - we would have been on the floor as the time clock was being questioned and not in the showers. ( Ofcourse there was that one time a cameraman made a big deal on the news about D.D. not shaking hands with Stan Joplin)

Just wondering. Did we maybe think a foul could have been called on us for something and decided to hurry up and get out of there? Why no handshake - that's what I'm wondering???????

I believe tha primary reason is that Buffalo's coach was out in the middle of the court throwing a "hissy ift" over not having a foul called on the shot that ended up bing the shot violation..

Well, OK, though if we had two teams in the Top 25, I wager that Chryst would be getting credit for that.

I don't buy that it is automatically true that being on ESPN on Tuesday nights in November is good for MAC football. I don't argue that everyone says it is. I do assert that there is no factual evidence, at all, that this is true.

In fact, MAC football was lots stronger when the we didn't have as much TV exposure. Today, we're a lot closer (based on actual facts) to being the Sun Belt of college football then we are to being the Missouri Valley of college football. In no way are we--even remotely--close to doing what MVC is doing. Lowest paid coaches, worst facilities--not MVC style programs.

I have been a supporter of Chryst. But I don't see the evidence that what he is doing is working. Add to it our Banana Republic style football scheduling and the Buffalo situation, and I guess in my mind, the meter is moving toward the middle for me.

To bring the conversation back to basketball, here is a great quote from the Dayton Daily News that is quoted iin Maureen's blog today that tells the story:

Know how we look down on third-world countries and say about them, “Aw, look how cute they are, trying to be grown-up nations”? It’s incidents like that that make people feel the same way about the MAC and other mid-major conferences. Can you imagine this same thing happening in the Big Ten or the Big East?

This is true. I would be here assigning that success to the great television exposure he is getting our league -- which leads to your question, that I failed to answer previously: What are weeknight ESPN games getting us?

My view is weeknight ESPN games are a end unto themselves.

One would hope they are also a means to something else -- better recruiting, more visibility and respect among national opinion leaders. I must concede this doesn't appear to be happening right now.

But, even if they aren't a means to any of these things, they are an end.

The glory of Falcon football, for me, when one gets beyond the wins and losses, is to step onto a field with a Wisconsin or a Northwestern and enjoy -- if only for three hours -- the sensation that we belong there.

Even if our team gets blown out, the very act of being on that field shows we belong. It pushes some buttons within me about what I want for our university long term and how I hope my degree is valued by others decades hence.

So, the weeknight games are an end in that sense. To play Miami or Toledo on national television is to suggest these games belong on national television, that we are nationally relevant, and it's an damned important message to send about ourselves as an institution.

And what's the cost?

We have fewer people at some of our games -- but this isn't a fatal flaw to me.

I look back at the last home game with Toledo. We had, what, 17,000 people there? If you figure we could have had 24,000 people there on a Saturday, there's your cost -- and I don't think that's too steep a cost to be on national television.

It's annoying and frustrating -- I missed a chance to be at the last Miami game, a game I had tickets for, because I couldn't be up there on a weeknight because some personal challenges came up. And I still think this was a worthy trade off, in my view. The exposure was worth more than the cash the department went without for that game, in my view.

In fact, I suspect some of these TV windows may gradually start to close as other leagues warm up to the opportunity to play on weeknights. We already see the Big East playing some of these games. Will the Big 12 or the Pac-10 eventually take the plunge?

I do wonder if we will look back, 20 years hence, with a sense of wonder at just how much exposure we were getting now -- just as I look back to the 1970s and marvel at the fact that CBS did occasional MAC games.

Shifting gears slightly: O&B, you suggest "MAC football was lots stronger when we didn't have as much TV exposure."

While I could quibble (2003 was our league's home run year, and it was a fairly well televised year), let's accept that proposition, because there is probably some merit to it (you can point to Marshall's 1999 season, Toledo's 1995 season and several other Miami seasons along the way).

Are you suggesting a casual link? I don't see how any one could argue that TV exposure has made us worse.

I don't think you are, either, but it is the implication.

I guess I would close with this: The challenges facing individual MAC programs are so great that I wonder if anyone has the answer, and I'm not sure these challenges are necessarily the responsibility of the league commissioner.

We rely so much on the student fee to make ends meet in an environment where:

1. Much better financed programs are also relying to some extent on the student fee (e.g., West Viriginia)
2. Expenses seem to be outpacing inflation in a sort of arms-race environment.
3. Pressure is growing to get control of the price of a college education.

It's such a difficult situation that I wonder anyone has the answers. I certainly don't think Chryst can be blamed for this stuff.

My primary hopes and aspirations for our athletic department are these:

1. Continue playing Division I-A football and build the program, much as the folks at East Carolina, Boise State and Southern Mississippi have built their programs.
2. Continue playing men's ice hockey and rebuild the program into significance.

Neither of these things are Chryst's responsibility, and I don't think his actions have held us back at all. We need to look at ourselves.

(I apologize for putting this in the hoops forum. But the conversation drifted here, it's a good conversation and I don't know that it necessarily fits in any particular forum).

No, I'm not arguing that TV exposure makes us worse. Just challenging the assumption that it makes us better, and asserting that we do not need it to succeed. If it helps us get players, where are they?

Now, I agree with you on the challenges facing our programs. And, I agree that Chryst is not responsible for them. However, I also think that if he was creating an environment of success for the MAC, at least a couple of our programs would be excelling. What is he responsible for if not this?

Finally, your concern is well placed. I don't think ESPN will continue to show BG-Miami games with less than two wins between them---even on a Tuesday night. I think the MAC may have missed its window, as you say.

By the way, ABC was required by its NCAA conference to carry a MAC game every couple of years. That's the only reason we were on.

I also agree with your aspirations. Rick Chryst is doing nothing to help us get there.

MAC Officiating

Post by Vandelay »

At a high level, there is one main reason why the commissioner’s office will side with the officials of any sport, and most leagues do the same. After the game, DD can go to the press and air his grievances. UB's coach can do so too. The MAC officials, like any sports officials, are not allowed to talk to the press. They do not have the forum to have a press conference to state what happened or to air their grievances against coaches.

Therefore, the MAC, or any other league, will side to officials since they have bulls-eye on them all of the time and can provide an easy scapegoat to any loss. I'm not saying the MAC officials of this game didn't make any mistakes, I'm sure they did. But coach’s cannot run to the press with profanity laced comments and expect to come out unscathed.

The fact that DD didn't get any sort of public suspension means the MAC office probably thought he had a right to complain, just not in the forum he chose.

Its a catch 22 situation for Dakich...

1) If he fails to talk to reporters and voice his displeasure he risks losing the confidence of his players in him as a leader.

2) If he voices his concern... he gets raked over by the athletic department and MAC.

I think he chose the better of the two options.

Curt Miller, what a Bowling Green coach SHOULD be!!!!! Isn't it amazing how far a little bit of class and sportsmanship goes.
