The Mid-American's Scheduling Disaster

Post by bgsufn »

Interesting blog post from the Wizard of Odds:
Mark your calendar for Oct. 27 because history is going to be made. Look at the above schedules posted on the official sites of Illinois and Vanderbilt and you will see that each team is playing host to Kent State that day.

Start times for the Golden Flashes' doubleheader in cities 377 miles apart have yet to be announced.

This is one of the "scheduling issues" facing Mid-American Conference teams for the second year in a row. You might recall last year when Buffalo broke contracts with West Virginia and Rutgers to play games against Auburn and Wisconsin that resulted in bigger payouts.

This year's mess is being blamed in part on Temple becoming a full-fledged member of the MAC. Word is that Temple at one point had scheduled five nonconference games. Only four are allowed.

A tipster who wishes to remain anonymous said the MAC's scheduling issues might eventually result in repercussions for the league: "I'm not so sure that other conferences aren't looking at this and telling league members not to work with the Mid-American because of this mess."

There's more. A lot more. Here is a sampling of what you can find regarding the MAC's scheduling issues:
Check it out... interesting reading!

The Big Ten is starting to talk about expanding to a 9 game conference schedule, you might wonder if having to deal with the MAC was a factor. If only because it is annoying with the instability clearly being shown.

Maybe the MAC needs to dump Temple now, not later. Likewise, reprimand and punish some member schools harshly. But that would require action and such, which isn’t likely either from the conference leadership, or member schools.

I won’t dump all of this at the door step of the conference commish. There are some messy small time operations in the MAC, Kent among them, Temple at the head of them. They need to get thrashed out and figure what they are about.

With 11 teams, that's leave one team still having an 8 game conference schedule. The only way the Big Ten expands their conference schedule would bump it up to 10 conference games, or getting a 12th team (or, hypothetically dropping a team).

I have a degree in history. These number things, I find them confusing and strange. I just look at the calendar and yell "make schedule go!"

where headed to D2 so who cares if we looking like dolts or like money grubbering parasites that dont draw at home....its hell in a hand basket either way.

And if Cryst all mighty on high doesnt pull the cht together we will get there real fast.

I still think...the original MAC ought to kick out the new MAC and just get on with traditional MAC football allready.

Yes, because a 7 team conference will keep us around D1 much longer...

We should limit the MAC to Ohio schools only and rechristen the conference as the "Incest League"

Yeah, but with a name like that, Marshall would be demanding to be a member.

Why? Because of the incest thing, or because Marshall fans think their school is already in Ohio?
