Wrestling?
Why doesn't BGSU have wrestling? I'm assuming if we ever did have it, the program was probably an early casualty of Title IX. Does anybody know if we ever had a program or why we don't/haven't?

Re: Wrestling?
We had one in the 50's/60's era, but I'm not sure if it even made it long enough to be affected by Title IX.falconfan1999 wrote:Why doesn't BGSU have wrestling? Actually, Wrestling was a very strong sport (along with our swimming program under Sam Cooper) "back in the days " of this poster.... and if I'm not mistaken, the wrestling program actually was "hurt" if you will, when we added hockey. Title IX COULD have been a factor, but the success of the hockey program, coupled with the fact that their seasons were virtually simultaneous, probably did as much damage to wrestling as anything. I graduated with several MAC champ wrestlers, several of whom were also on Doyt Perry's football teams. The MAC overall has virtually dropped wrestling as a program...only KSU, CMU, and I think OU still have strong, competitive programs.GMBG2006 wrote:I can tell you that BG does have a club team not that it means anything but I am assuming that they dont have an actual team because of Title XI like you said.

Buffalo and NIU have been in the NCAA top 25 in the last few years. While there aren't many MAC schools w/ wrestling these days, (EMU, CMU, OU, Buffalo, Kent, NIU are it) the majority of those schools have had some good seasons lately. I'd love to see BGSU someday add some sports, with wrestling being one I'd be in favor of! Travel expenses would be the biggie here. The Midwest is a hotbed for NCAA wrestling, with some of the top programs being from Pennsylvania to the great plains states.Class of 61 wrote:Actually, Wrestling was a very strong sport (along with our swimming program under Sam Cooper) "back in the days " of this poster.... and if I'm not mistaken, the wrestling program actually was "hurt" if you will, when we added hockey.
