Akron snubbed...

Post by marmstr »

from everything that is, how is it that a team wins 26 games and can't even get into the NIT. The Mid-Major hate is getting worse in college basketball.

MAC basketball just isn't very good right now.

I think Akron was a really good team, and I thought that they could even win a game in the NCAAs, but the fact is that they lost the conference tournament, were not the regular season conference champs, and played a TERRIBLE OOC schedule.

If you want the MAC to start getting some respect tell them to start scheduling and BEATING some worthwhile teams. Playing these crappy OOC schedules we have no place to bitch & moan if we get snubbed out of bids.

Once you miss out on the NCAA the NIT has always been about money, so it doesn't shock me that they missed out on that. With only 32 bids and a number of them going to conference champs there are only so many to go around.

Agreed. They finished second in the regular season, second in the tourney and beat "nobody" out of conference. I think Akron was clearly the best team in the MAC this year, but they have no beef (or are well down the list of teams that got hosed, anyway).

In years past the MAC has gotten bent over, but this isn't one of them.

The MAC needs to schedule some ACC and Big East contests, especially winnable ones against middle-of-the-conference teams. Last season we had that miracle win over Virginia Tech but a terrible time in the conference. If Akron had the season they just finished but also included a win over a team like VT, that would be some good leverage to get into the NCAA.

Agreed. The ONLY quality opponent they played OOC was really Nevada; and even they are a mid-major who is having a good run of years here.

If MAC teams want at large bids they should start playing decent competition. Much like the MVC has done in recent years...I love that they are penalizing teams for playing crappy OOC opponents, that's a GREAT policy, IMO.

Play better teams and you'll get better recruits. Get better recruits you create better teams. Better teams lead to winning some games against the higher competition, and that will eventually lead into multiple tourney bids. In recent years it seems that the overwhelming policy of MAC schools is to play OOC schedules that they can dominate then whine when they don't get in with 24 wins over a craptacular schedule. Kudos to UT for playing a touch OOC sched this year. They didn't pick up the wins they would need for an at large berth, but at least they put their balls on the line and played some teams worth something.
