But... Why does everyone think this is so classy? Yes, the letter was very well written and certainly heart-felt. But I think he may be just beating Christopher to the punch. Now he can always say he resigned and was never fired. I mean, what makes anyone think Christopher was even considering an extension anyway? Better yet, maybe our AD did the classy thing here and told Dan the situation and let him 'resign' instead of going through the process of not being extended. Just food for thought.

I remember sitting on the floor of the ticket office waiting to get tickets to the Michigan game and Coach coming out and handed out T-Shirts and media guides to the students in line. He had his rough times, but I will always remember the good things he did for the basketball program and the school itself.
I completely agree. My four years at BG were heightened by Dan Dakich and the success of his basketball team. Anthony stacy, Keith McLeod, Brandon Pardon.....I hope we can return to those days...Dakiches first tenure.

Thanks Dan.

Not trying to be the turd in the punch bowl.

I think this was probably the best way to handle the situation. But everyone is handing DD all the accolades for being classy, when, in fact, I think it only goes down this way if our Athletic Department let's it. They did the right thing in letting him save face to some extent.

As I said, I am not saying this to be anti-Dakich. I wish him and his family the best and appreciate all that he has accomplished here.

On the crazy side, here is a prediction for where he ends up - Eastern Oregon.

It's classy because Dakich's letter didn't need to be written. It didn't need to be shared. He could have shunned the media and the community he became a part of. He could have gotten pissy about it and made it look like he was getting run out by a new-to-town AD who lets the MAC handle his football scheduling and has had a former or current Purude assistant coach penciled in for DD's job since he set foot on campus.

Dan didn't do any of that, he took the high road and communicated some great thoughts and sentiments about his position.

What he said.

The fact that he resigned isn't really the "classy" part, it's the kind thoughts and memories he shared as he did so.

Does this mean we might see Gene Keady and the world's worst comb-over at BG next year?

I'll agree with that. And I think I already stated that the letter was very well written.

I used the term "classy" to describe the quote I posted. I thought that was classy. If you don't agree with me, you are a douchebag. And not a classy one at that!

Yes, I am that classless douchebag. :D

I agree that the letter is wonderful and filled with respect and class. But we need to give the Athletic Department more credit for allowing the situation to play out this way and giving Dan the opportunity to write the classy letter.

From JD's release a few minutes ago:

March 13. 2007

Dan Dakich, who completed his 10th season as Bowling Green's head men's basketball coach in 2006-07, will not seek a contract extension to return to the BGSU bench for the 2007-08 season when his contract expires June 30, Bowling Green Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Greg Christopher announced Tuesday.

"Being involved with BGSU basketball has been a wonderful part of my life and I thank the administration, players, coaches and fans for their support during the last 10 years," said Dakich. "BGSU will have no bigger fan than the entire Dakich family."

Dakich, 156-140, finished tied for third in all-time victories at BGSU which also ranks 10th in overall games among all coaches in MAC history. He also posted four 18+ win seasons, which is tied for second all-time among coaches who have guided the Falcons. His 2000 squad won the regular season MAC title and in 2002 his team advanced to the MAC Tournament title game and also played in the NIT.

"Dan's tenure has seen a number of positives and I thank him for his dedication to this program," said Christopher. "Over his 10 years here at BGSU, Dan has been totally committed to the success of our student-athletes and Bowling Green men's basketball."

He has seen 20 of his 23 senior student-athletes earn degrees, coached two MAC Players of the Year, one All-American, an Academic All-American and had 17 players earn All-MAC status.

"I appreciate how Dan and the young men on the team handled this year." said Christopher. "Although the season wasn't what we hoped for, they didn't quit and worked hard from the beginning until last week in Cleveland."

Christopher will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

"We are committed to finding the right person for our student-athletes and program," Christopher said. "We will begin the extensive research and background process immediately. There is no set timeline, as finding the right fit is more important than any deadline."

Assistant Coach LaMonta Stone will oversee the day-to-day operations of the program until a new head coach is appointed. All members of the current coaching staff will be paid until their contracts expire on June 30. The new head coach will have full discretion in finalizing a coaching staff.

Christopher will have no further comment until the search process is completed.

Lets leave it as this: Dan got to leave with his head up. No dark rumors or talk as his "review" came up. He knew this was coming, either because he isn't dumb, or he was communicating plainly with the AD from the start.

Now aside from the new coaching search, another logical question:

With Dakich gone, a fast moving, money hunting AD in control, and a new coach coming, will we see a convo center finally announced?

It seems to me, that this is the "clean break" and PR launching point to start work on replacing what WILL BE a major issue with any top flight canidates. I've felt Dakich was an issue and reason for not announcing the project for a few years now.
