Why bother with D1 Football?
Why bother with D1 Football?
This upcoming year we have 3 home games that the students have a chance to attend and a road schedule that the students will pay little or no attention to. Considering the number of scholarships and the resources that are required to run a D1 football, what is the point?
Drop down to D3 and put your resources into the sports that the student can get involved with, BBall & Hockey. When these programs are slightly successful, the students are involved and the home game atmosphere is great.
As a BG alumni from the 70’s, my BG sports memories are about Bball & Hockey. I can tell you very little about what happened in football. Why bother with D1 football?

for personal reason i prey this doesnt happen. i personally can't stand bball OR hockey. football and baseball for me, and our baseball program is fun, but not exactly big....or well attended. football was fun, and we have too big an investment in it to drop it down to the nether-regions.
PLUS, if we drop it down could u stand the taunting of the toledo fans who still have a "big program" not me!
however, with this schedule we might not have a choice.

15M student school, Football attendence is slightly below BG's. Competing for national championship every year. Their fans are having a great time. How much fun did you have last year.
IF (HUGE IF) we were going to leave the Bowl side of Division 1, it would be to the Championship division.

None, because we were terrible.KPAFalcon wrote:15M student school, Football attendence is slightly below BG's. Competing for national championship every year. Their fans are having a great time. How much fun did you have last year.
I had a blast in 2001, 2002, 2003, and to a lesser extent 2004.
Re: Grand Valley
The last three years, I've had lots of fun, especially at the football games because I've been in the FMB since I arrived here. Just because the fans aren't "having fun" isn't a reason to drop down to D3...as what BGDrew said, if we drop football down, it would be to the Championship Division of D1 and no further.KPAFalcon wrote:15M student school, Football attendence is slightly below BG's. Actually GVSU is bigger than BG. GVSU now stands at 23,000+ student enrollment and plays DII football. The likes of Mount Union play DIII.KPAFalcon wrote:15M student school, Football attendence is slightly below BG's. Competing for national championship every year. Their fans are having a great time. Everyone around here has gone completely batshit insane.
I've said that in jest before, but I mean it this time. With every fibre in my being.

Re: Grand Valley
I'll agree with you that last year sucked. It did, and I doubt many would disagree with that. But with that said, it doesn’t override going to bowl games, being ranked in the Top-25, beating BCS programs, having College Gameday on campus, actually hosting BCS programs, competing at the highest level in college football. Remember this in the past few years? I’m not going to let a couple down years block out what we’ve done and what we can strive to do and be again. Furthermore, I can’t even talk anymore about the topic of BG dropping below I-A anymore, it’s a complete waste of time. I’m damn proud we’re in D-I. Yeah, the MAC isn’t at the top in terms of I-A conferences, but it sure as hell is a lot better than being I-AA, D-II or D-III.KPAFalcon wrote:How much fun did you have last year.
