Actually, there was at one time (during the Harold Anderson days) a rivalry and annual game between WKU and BG....a kind of battle of the Bowling Greens.

Do you mean in football or basketball? Because According to my favorite source, We've played Eastern Kentucky four times and the University of Kentucky three times.

Nothing natural about it, other than our schools are in towns that have the same name"

Nothing natural....except this very natural connection. Plus they are a state away.

It could develop into a rivalry, but that's not a natural rivalry.

Sorry basketball. I thought the Harold Anderson reference would give it away.

The head of the Indy alumni chapter actually played bball at WKU before transferring to BG to play for Anderson. Injuries kept him off the floor, I think, but Andy kept him around.

The Hilltoppers had our number, too... BG is 9-20 all-time against them (at least through 1995, I'm too lazy to go hunt down a more recent media guide. )

Well, it did, but we are discussing this in the football forum, so I was just making sure I didn't miss something. 8)

I would guess that WKU was not invited to join the MAC because they are, primarily, an undergraduate institution. They offer a handful of masters degree programs, but do not offer any doctoral programs (other than a cooperative program with Louisville). With the possible exception of Miami, most schools in the MAC have much more active graduate programs.

I could be wrong about that, but that was the most noteable thing I could find in looking through their fact book.

BO:

You hit it right on the head. Schade is more well-versed in the terminology, but WKU has a very limited graduate program. For all we want to knock Temple in regard to football, they have a broad, robust graduate program. Since it is the university presidents that make these decisions, they use criteria that is important to them.

Now I believe there are certain members of the MAC that don't fit the conference's general academic profile (Eastern maybe?), but their membership predates a lot of the current parameters.

The thing that made it a "rivalry" in the 50's-60's is that Adolph Rupp (UK), Eddie Diddle (WKU) and Harold Anderson (BG) were the three winningest active coaches in the nation at the time, so when Diddle and Anderson got together, it was quite a show. I remember when Clem Haskins played for Diddle at WKU and they came to town. One of the two or three top "shows" I have ever seen at Anderson Arena!

This schedule blows. All I know is that this joke of an Athletic Director better start bringing in some hella cash because he has no clue how to run a freaking athletic department. Brings back a hockey coach that has been nothing but a joke. Brings back a football coach that has watched the program erode slowly each year he's been here, and has whored out our entire football program so the MAC can be happy.

The way this athletic program has been recently makes it real hard to be a fan.

Gotta agree on this one - it does blow. I don't care about the AD's indicated committment. I want results and I am sorry - NO MAC team should turn down a top ten team at home - Period. Our AD sucks.

It's actually quite easy to be a fan. You just support the kids! The scheduling is not in their hands. I am still getting season tickets and will enjoy every minute of Falcon football. Under your criteria the new basketball had better never lose and should only put the top 10 to 15 in the country. As far as bringing back the football and hockey coach I would like to know where you think the money to buy out those contracts would come from? Perhaps operating budgets are not important. We don't need to travel anywhere, the teams can just pile into each others cars to go to games. Or maybe we don't need to maintain the grounds? If you call for someones head then also put forward a suggestion of how we will pay for it. If the AD would have fired Brandon, Pooch, and lost Dakich but not worried about buying out contracts then he would be irresponsible. Right now, he is living within his budget. When the AD job was open I don't recall your name mentioned as a candidate, I must have mised it. (Please note the sarcasm... )

To start, he could have kept Boise on the schedule and that game would have brought in a LOT more $$$$ than WKU!!! Maybe that would help with the budget.
