My schedule redux...a cavalcade of mediocrities

Post by Flipper »

Given all the sturm, drang and yes, ANGST we're seeing on the board in response to our schedule, I thought it might be useful to take a look back over my shoulder...beyond that guy with the dagger...and examine our home schedules over the past five years.

Ok? Here we go!!!

2002 Tenn Tech (1AA) Mizzou, OU, WMU, Ball St and EMU

2003 EKU (1AA) Liberty (1AA) CMU, NIU, Kent, Toledo

2004 SEMO (1AA) Ball ST, EMU, WMU, Mooshall

2005 Temple, OU, WMU, Akron, Toledo

2006 Buffalo, Kent, EMU, Miami and a neutral game against those
Badger bastages.

2007 WKU (1AA) Temple, OU, Akron and Toledo.

So....I guess it's pretty obvious that our anger is driven more by the unmet expectation that we'd see Boise State, Navy and a crossover with NIU than it is the schedule itself because 2007 looks to be par for the course.

WHAT AM I SAYING!!!....I've been conditioned to accept medicority as the norm. Please, shoot me now before I begin to like "Dancing with the Stars" .

But enough about my death...let's talk about someone elses's. No, let's talk about what we can do as fans? I call upon the board members with a background in the sciences to launch "Project falconfreak". Project FF wil involve the cloning of our most rabid fans in an effort to drive an increase in attendance.

Spot on assessment, Flip. This year's schedule is merely a continuation of a trend.

My big thing is this. We're opening the Sebo center, and had the opportunity to make it a real spectacle. We had a contract that a BCS winning team was obligated to play at DLP this season.

How do we not do everything in our power to line those two events up? This doesn't seem like brain surgery to me. We had the perfect opportunity to springboard off of the Sebo opening, and use that momentum for ticket sales, donations, recruiting, etc. Instead, we just pissed all these opportunites away, and we get BS explanations as to why.

I'm no less pissed about this now than I was when the schedule came out, and I'll be no less pissed when we open the Sebo with WKU or Temple or whoever 6 months from now.

This whole situation is, to me, in a word, unacceptable.

I don't really mind playing WKU. That will be fun, really.

I'm completely in ire over the loss of Boise from the home slate just to cowtow to the commish. I'm also miffed about Temple - a team no one in BG cares about.

I LOVE the away schedule but that's just not enough to get me excited about the up and coming season. I just can't get out of my head the "what could have been."

I hope we can get 15K ave. I just don't see it with our home sched.

Well, now that Temple is in our division we can prepare to be miffed every year.

I don't mind WKU, either.

Our attendance, as usual, will depend on weather and the team's success.

Here's some guesstimates ...

Temple: We'll have a good crowd for this one. First home game, probably good weather, Sebo dedication, etc.

WKU: Homecoming + good weather should equal another good crowd.

Ohio: Family weekend ... weather will be a bit more dicey, but unless the team is in total freefall, I'd expect a decent crowd, at least.

Akron: This is a real potential clunker. If the weather and team are both below average, a poor turnout is likely.

Toledo: Big crowd.

So I don't think 15K is all that much of a stretch for us despite our less-than-enthusiastic reaction to the schedule.

This is what I've been saying about people on this board for quite awhile. Way too many of us seem to be way too accepting of mediocrity.

I have bigger visions for BG than just another mid major. I want to be the mid major that fights their way up to the higher level. I know that will likely never happen, but it's what I want nonetheless. It's why I get angered when we bring coaches back after 4 years of declining performance. It's why I get angry when I see lousy home schedules in football, and generally worthless OOC schedules in hoops.

I want BG to become one of the big boys, but until we get rid of this culture of accepting mediocrity that will never happen. Unfortunately I get the feeling our new AD loves mediocrity moreso than we ever did...I guess that's what happens when you grab somebody from Purdue; they practically define mediocrity.

Mediocrity was not accepted here. The schedules were lambasted and the coaches written off.

Good point. Christopher had a chance to build some momentum and set a tone. If these results are indicative of what he brings to the table, it will be tough to remain optimistic.

Great idea Flipper. I've brought up that idea before on this board. We need to clone about 20k FalconFreaks. So lets get our university science tech's on that shall we?

I don't want to support mediocrity, but I also want to support my team through thick and thin. Most people know, I am an ardent Browns fan. No matter how bad my team is I always stand by them. However I try to voice my opinions where they count around the university community. I was a little disgruntled with this year's schedule but as I look at Flipper's analysis I can't help but notice that there is some slight improvement. At least we aren't playing TWO 1-AA teams like a couple years ago.

As far as the attendence issue goes, what really needs to happen is we students need to make better efforts at recruiting freshman into BG sports fandom every year. My freshman year goofyeuph showed me the wonders that were BG hockey with sigalet as a goalie and I was hooked for life. I had no choice in attending football games, but with how good Omar was I don't think I could ever walk away from the football team for hope of it happening again someday. Alumni fans come people who were fanatics as students. We need more student fans to trickle its way down through the system.

Exactly guys. There is a trend for BGSU getting hosed with a mediocre schedule. We really did piss this season away as far as the schedule goes. I really doubt increasing attendance will help this- it would just give the MAC another reason to hose us to help another MAC turd. Our AD and this conference stink.

I think I am going to print T-shirts and give them away free at the first game that say

We are MAC
Boise @ BGSU, 2007
MAC - no thanks
We are MAC

Yes, this message is sarcastic and seriously I just may do it. I would rather spend my season ticket money on this.

Actually, we do not play any 1-AA teams since WKU will be playing 1-A this year. That means we have not played a 1-AA team since 2004 I believe. Not that playing good 1-AA teams is a bad thing.

Clone away fellas! I share the disappointment and not accepting mediocre. I want to be the "Boise State of the Midwest"...the team that scares the crap outta the BCS boys...like we did a few years ago.
