Possible Game with Middle Tennessee?

Post by jfh2c »

Our fans have been very interested in the run you all are making. In fact we're talking as much about your team as we are about our team right now. In one thread we're talking about possible matchups we'd like to see in the future. One poster mentioned he'd love to see a matchup with you guys.

"I would really like to see us play Bowling Green State. They are a quality team from a mid-major conference. They are basically in our same boat. I think instead of waiting on big conference schools to do us a favor and schedule us, we should set up rivalries with other quality mid-majors. I also think that due to both teams' recent success ESPN might consider televising such a matchup."

Come check it out and give us some of your insight. We always love to have other fans discuss WCBB with us.

this actually brings me back to something I was thinking about a couple weeks ago. The men have the bracket buster and yes, I know that it's sponsored by ESPN and it's somewhat made for TV.....but wouldn't it be great if the women could have something similiar? A Saturday, late in the season, where mid majors are matched up based on current season records, RPI, etc......and let the teams play each other. A BG vs. MTSU or BG vs. GW or MTSU vs. GW would have been extremely beneficial this season to both teams. Toss in UWGB, Ball St., James Madison, Deleware, Temple........could have been some really fantastic games. It doesn't need to be made for TV....they just need a small governing body to set the match ups.

I love the suggestion for the future though. Love it a LOT. If solid mid major programs can't get games against the big dogs, they definitely should try to play each other as much as possible. I hate to bring the men into it....but that's how Gonzaga started. They played the best mid major teams they could, built up their RPI and SOS (as well as their reputation) the best they could, and became attractive to the majors because all of a sudden, a loss to them doesn't hurt their RPI or SOS one bit.

Why is it that this idea might make TOO much sense?

Schedule Middle Tenn.?

Post by Class of 61 »

First off, I think a MTSU - BG matchup would be good for both schools....but I think some people have forgotten how tough BG's OOC schedule was THIS year, without the use of other Mid-majors.... Notre Dame, Indiana, Duke, Temple etc. aren't exactly a chopped liver OOC list of opponents....and this has made our ladies more battle tested IMO.
My biggest concern about scheduling this tough NEXT year is quite simple... we lose 5 of our top 7 players...even with another apparent "super" class coming in, we'd have to rely upon a LOT of freshmen to supplement our returnees, (who hopefully, will be a bit healthier next year).
Schedule "down" just a bit early (can't recall this Senior group's freshman year schedule, but I know it wasn't as tough), then gradually make the schedule more difficult each years as this group "toughens up". It's basically what C.Miller did with this year's team and look at the results.

But!!!!! Go BG and Go Blue Raiders (just not as fast, OK?)

I agree with you '61. Next year is not the right year to do this, but maybe in two years

I'd love to see us schedule schools like MTSU and WKU in a number of sports. For all my whining, I don't have a problem with scheduling WKU in football...I jst wanted to see Boise State.

Anyway...we are definitely going to lean on the backcourt next year...at least until the kids up front grow up some.

but after seeing what happened to the men after Dakich's poor OOC scheduling......don't you want to see next year's team play a tough OOC schedule....not as tough as this season but not watered down TOO much? I'm of the belief that next year's team is going to be mega talented and COULD make a run at a 4-peat. However, that won't be possible if too many cupcakes are scheduled. They need some tough OOC games, even if it means losing by 25, to get up to speed and ready for the MAC grind.

Right, but with young players, building confidence is sometimes more important early on.

There's no way we schedule as poorly as the men's team did. That just isn't going to happen. But there's also no way you see a gauntlet like this year. There's plenty of middle ground.

From what we've seen from this year's freshman class, I believe we may see a stronger schedule than we are all anticipating. We have to remember that Achter, Golds, Taylor, and (hopefully) Jazz will still be here to anchor us next year.

Whatever the case, Curt Miller will never put us in any situation other than the absolute most optimal chance for success. If he feels MTSU is a good match, we'll probably see them.
Yeah right girl!

I truly believe that in order to get your team ready for the grind of a conference season you have to schedule 4-5 games with tough OOC games. Not every game has to be with a quality opponent, but you can't schedule "easy", no matter the makeup of your team. We scheduled a little easier this year OOC with 8 of our 13 kids being freshman. It didn't help us in the first part of the conference as we started. We started 0-3 and just didn't know what it took to win the close games. But once we started getting into the conference we realized what it was going to take and played well for the most part. As long as Curt is the coach, I don't think that psyche is going to be a big problem. MTSU, GW, Temple, Delaware, and another good mid-major would be good. I would like to see BG schedule UL Lafayette. Coach Miller and Coach Hall are friends, and Kelley is building a very good program there. That would be the five I would like to see play next year.

that's what I meant. You just word it more efficiently. :D

I was trying to allow for confidence building winable games within my take....just wouldn't mind seeing 1 or maybe 2 extremely tough opponents on the schedule....maybe late in the OOC schedule....to use as a measuring stick and allow for the youngsters to get on the floor against top notch (or close to that) NCAA competition. That experience would be valuable.....imho.

honestly, I don't care who they play as long as they are at their peak heading into Cleveland March of 2008. I stand by my belief that they (the incredibly talented incoming class) can match what these Seniors did....and appear in the tourney championship game as freshmen. If a mega tough game or 2 mixed into the OOC schedule is not necessary to help get them ready for that kind of a run, that's cool.

Do you all ever play the teams from Bizarro Bowling Green? I really hate Western, but I wouldn't mind seeing you guys dominate them. I get a lot of people that say I should hope they do well when playing OOC. I totally disagree, if it were possible to watch them lose every single game in every sport they play I wouldn't mind a bit.

We're actually playing them in football this year, and there are rumors they may be headed for our conference eventually.

I'm sure that they started those rumors. I am sure you'll wipe their football team off the map. We play them also. I honestly think that they might not win a game next year.

From what I've heard we are basically in competition with them to move conferences. So, I guess it depends on which schools athletics are in better position. Personally, I would think it's us because they are not even in D-1 in football yet. They are finally building the other half of their football stadium. Before these recent improvements their "Stadium" was just a field with a set of seats on one side. It looked a lot like a weak high school. As I said we hate them a lot, almost as much as I hate Vanderbilt... speaking of... I love you guys for beating Vandy.
