Another Opening

Post by PGY Tiercel »

Coaches keep falling this year. Rene Portland resigned at PSU. As Michelle Vopoel put it, this adds to the 8 million job openings out there, in which Curt could get an offer from

Great.......

This is getting real old and I'm frankly tired of hearing about Curt Miller's leaving or his possible new coaching jobs.

really. I'm surprised. I can't wait to see what big job Curt can land. (Just in case overt sarcasm isn't readily detectable.

Of course this could also just be news that a long time coach with some PR/legal trouble over the last couple of years calls it quites. That and a little play on the writing by Michelle Voepel today.

Does the world spin around in your brain with all the eye rolling you do.

the fact of the matter is.....he is a hot commodity and schools would be stupid to ignore him. Just because his name pops up doesn't mean he's leaving. It just means that he's wanted. That's the unfortunate nature of life as a fan of a mid major. If your coach is worth a darned....the big schools with the big money WILL come calling. I wouldn't fault him if he accepted an offer from a B11 school or a certain P10 school that has him on their radar (along with about 6 other coaches).....but if he leaves for a Mountain West, WAC, A10, or C-USA job....that'd be quite unsettling.....and possibly not even considered a latteral move.

Yes, jobs open up all the time, but is Pat Summit's name bantered about in coaching job openingings all the time? No, cuz Summit is the JoPa of women's college basketball and will never leave Tenn. I'm getting tired of the Mac being a coaching farm system for the "power conferences".

We "mid-majors" can't win, we're stuck with bad coaches untill contracts expire cuz we don't have financial ability to fire them and we lose our coaches to the big conferences when we bring our programs to new heights. Its frankly just getting old.

Pat Summit isn't a great example because there might not be another school in the country who will pay Pat Summit dollars for a coach....well, unless we are talking about Geno money at UConn. That guy turned down an offer from the Phoenix Mercury and the chance to coach Diana again (not to mention Penny Taylor and Cappie P.) because he'd have to take a substantial pay cut to go pro.

I feel your frustration. I'm just saying that it's the nature of the beast if you are a fan of a mid major sports team. MAC programs are launching boards to bigger jobs. That's just the way it is. We can't do anything about that. It's a tough pill to swallow.

I've said this a few times - but Coach Miller has a clause in his current contract that only allows his to leave for a few schools. He isn't able to just bolt for any opening, which I don't think he'll do, but all this talk about random openings has no backing at all.

you mean to say that the rumor about him being a candidate for the Kentucky men's job is untrue?

I didn't know about the clause. That's good news. It doesn't squash the rumors (national media and message board's across the country could care less what his contract says) but it does limit the scenarios.

Sure, It may say that in the contract, doesn't really hold squat though. I'm pretty sure Urban Meyer only had a couple of schools he could break for (at least that was what ND though), but he seems quite happy at Florida now.

Lets not get so pissy about this. Curt has done a phenomenal job at BG, not only his he going to get a lot of attention from other schools and the media, he deserves it.

I'm hoping Curt has a lot to stay for here, however I wouldn't hold it against him. This year there seems to be a lot more job openings than usual (men and women). Some position openings are more intriguing than others, due to the nature that they come open. Move this to other schools if you want. Rene Portland has had some serious problems lately, and it seemed like strong support from PSU. I find it interesting that she has resigned.

Those contract clauses regarding other named schools don't and can't prevent the coach from moving on. It may mean a few bucks for BG but that's about it.

Want to see some sparks fly?

Ask BGSU SMD Professor Dr. Vicky Krane about her thoughts on Rene Portland.
