Eddie Neville has had his up's and downs at BGSU and we can only wish him luck wherever he goes.
I was disappointed to hear from some of his teammates how this went down.

Neville was summoned to the coaches office where he was presented with a letter. All Paluch said to him was "Everything we want to say to you is in the letter", and that was it.

In my mind it showed what I have long thought of Scott Paluch. He has no idea how to treat his players and cannot even deal with an episode like dismissing Eddie Neville with "class". These thing happen but it's how you manage them that matters in the "big picture".

Can this man ever have the respect of his players?

That is a pretty crappy way to go about it. I agree it should have been done but not in that way. You have to show respect to receive respect.

Welcome to the real world. You ask to be treated like an adult, yet when you are, you complain.

Before you jump on me for my comment, remember back approximately ten months ago - Radio Shack released about 10,000 people through e-mail.

A friend of mine was called along with over 500 other people into a meeting that began at 4:00 PM in the company auditorium. After being thanked for their service, they were informed as a group their services were no longer required, their employee badges would be collected at the rear of the auditorium, and they could pick up their belongings the next day in the main lobby.

"But this is college" you say. Yes it is. And college is a training ground for the rest of your life.

Sometimes the real world works in ways we do not like. I do not know Neville and am not privy as to the entire situation he currently finds himself in. But I do know that sometimes, matters are better handled expeditiously.

Paluch may have been told by the AD how to handle the matter. Paluch may have been told by the General Counsel how to handle the matter. Paluch may have thought this was the best way to handle the situation. You and I do not know if others were involved in this decision.

No matter how Scott dismissed Neville from the team, there is a faction on this board that would have raised hell with his decision. It doesn't matter what Scott does - Damned if you, damned if you don't.

I'd agree with you, transfer......if Paluch had 10,000 people to dismiss from the hockey team. Part of a coach's job is to help mold kids into men. This is not how I want a coach teaching BG students how to act professionally. Maybe his hands were tied, but I don't think the world would have gone off-axis if he would've taken 5 or 10 minutes out of his day. A successful coach needs to have awesome people skills almost without fail. As another alleged example in his "body of work", I'm not sure that's the case with Paluch.

Doesn't matter though -- it's a pretty insignificant detail of a crappy situation....on both sides.

My guess is that Neville saw the writing on the wall a while ago. He's been in and out of trouble all year long. What more did the coach have to say that hasn't already been said?

It's too bad, too, because he showed some ability.

I don't know the background of the reasons behind the "letter" but with only the scant information I have, it could and perhaps should have been handled differently - regardless of who was responsible for that decision.

Respect is a two-way street. How much respect did Neville show towards the team with his actions at that bar?

And then those that want to go against that grain would have defended Paluch's actions. There are some serious physics concepts going on around here, an it's not just the super-anti-Paluch camp.

It's just another situation where we are getting one side of a story. Maybe more accurately, part of one side of a story. I'd love to hear what Paluch would have to say if he were being candid.

It doesn't change the fact that we need a new coach (the on-ice results are what they are), but all the interpersonal stuff (like Eddie's letter) are being presented from one point of view only.

I agree with Transfer. As I have stated from the beginning, Welcome to the real world. Having released a few people myself, it isn't worth trying to give a lot of explaination. Or giving some jacka$$ who screws off and does not want to perform a forum to vent his frustration.

From what can be surmissed from what little information we all have, Young Neville's days were numbered.... if we knew,he knew it. Why make it anymore difficult on him? Writing a letter is very business-like and professional. Your legal council can reveiw it. You reduce the chance of saying misleading or inapproiate things in a face-to-face confrontation.

I am not sure what everyone wants in a coach..... a discplinarian, a friendly-father type, someone loved by his players..... feared by his players.... which is.... what do we really want..... Do we want someone who makes players skate until they puke or someone who passes out hugs and cookies for good play.

And all of this "molding young men" crap.... please. As in any career, a good coach or mentor is only going to be able to teach you so much, the rest is up to you. You have be self-discplined, willing to work harder than you think is acceptable, and demand the best from yourself. You have to be your own harshest critic and not blame others for your shortcomings.
