True, it does hurt the integrity, and celebration may not be quite the right thing to do, but after last season, I think we all deserve a few moments of laughing at those rockets up north for the situation they got themselves into. As long as it is an incident contained only within UT, it shouldn't hurt the MAC or BG any credibility. As long as it stays an isolated incident, I'll keep chuckling.

If your going to laugh, direct your laughs at McDougle for possibly going to jail.

Toledo's fans don't deserve this.

Looks like more than one player was involved. I would love to see all of their athletes go down. Maybe Marshall will be next.

Not good for their University or the MAC at all. Although they are a huge rival you never want to see this happen.

But if this were happening to us, you would see a lot of Toledo fans come out of the wood work to shove this in our faces. Nice to see that our fans have stayed classy and haven't gone over to their board and give them crap.

For many of them, you're right.

For more than a few others... pass the relish, please?

Schad, I'm not either, but you're missing my point. Let's say the McDougle thing ends @ UT. Many times, when you start to look for one thing, you find out about other things, even if they aren't directly connected or are even only connected a little. You and I can probably name a couple examples. :D
After that post, I had to do some things, but I was thinking about it more, and I do think I agree.

It could be that we have had point-shaving situations in this league that have been handled completely internally, but that are somewhat known or rumored about around the conference.

If a bunch of employees at Toledo's athletic department are about to be shown the door -- and Rocket fans are completely merciless right now, they want axes to fall, and they seem to much care that their football coach's nickname is "Toledo" -- then anything they might think they know about other programs could start spilling out.

I've got to feel for a fella like "Toledo" Tom. It is difficult to believe he would have known about or condoned what is being alleged in federal court, and yet his career could go up in smoke over this in a very big hurry.

He may be about to be thrown under a very, very big bus.
I think some on here are missing the point. If we had people point shaving we deserve to go down. IF IF IF IF...[/u]

Students worry charge gives Toledo a bad rap
March 31, 2007

BY SUZETTE HACKNEY

TOLEDO -- As University of Toledo running back Harvey (Scooter) McDougle Jr. stood before a federal judge in Detroit on a charge of bribery involving point shaving in athletics, students on campus began to think about the weekend, some enjoying the sun, playing soccer, skateboarding or jogging.

Their talk of happy hours and late-night parties, however, soon turned to the player everyone simply calls Scooter, as reporters converged on the campus of about 21,000 students and word of the charge began to spread. Some students even peeked inside the football stadium to watch the team at spring practice.

"I just think the whole thing in general makes our school look bad," said Michaela Marks, 18, a nursing student from Copley, Ohio, who attended all of last fall's home games. "It doesn't give us a good reputation at all."

After practice, players and coaches left the stadium without commenting.

Tobin J. Klinger, senior director of university communications, released a statement saying the university "will evaluate the allegations in the complaint and will fully comply with federal authorities in their investigation."

"The University of Toledo is committed to the highest standards of ethical conduct and will not tolerate any alleged criminal activity. McDougle has been suspended pending the outcome of this issue."

Klinger said it would be premature to speculate whether other players could be involved, although the complaint mentions the recruitment of other players to participate in the scheme. He would not comment on McDougle's status as a student. No other students have been charged.

Julia Walton, 21, a criminal justice major from Twinsburg, Ohio, said the allegations were not much of a surprise given the scandals within other university athletic programs around the country. Still, she said such negative news about her school saddened her.

"In high school, players played for the love of the game," said Walton, who was a cheerleader and ran track. "Maybe now some players are in it for the money or the gifts."

Do you ever have anything to say that might benefit a conversation? Or do you just like complaining about absolutely everything?

Of course. I still laugh at Maurice Clarett for his screw-ups, not at Ohio State fans for what he did to all of them.

You know what...I hope that this finally simmers some people down about how "they are so glad we don't play in a big conference because everyone is corrupted in the Big Ten" BS that some people always spew on here. Face it...Any organization made up of people is susceptible to unethical people. NO ONE is immune! It's Toledo today, and it could be us tomorrow. Some how when I applied to BG, I don't remember taking a lie detector test to assess whether I was a "good person" or not.

The Plain Dealer weighs in by speaking with McDougle's coach at Shaw High School:

http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindeal ... xml&coll=2

Kind of a silly premise. After watching game film of Scooter at Shaw, "Devlin concluded that McDougle played to win when he played for Shaw in the fall of 2001 and 2002. McDougle would not have accepted bribes to rig the scores of high school games..."

I would think that everyone here would love for BG to play in a bigger conference if it were offered. I don't remember anyone saying that the Big Ten as a whole is corrupt. We usually point out one school from the conference that breaks the rules but usually gets by with a slap on the wrist.

Bowling Green has never been found guilty of a major infraction by the NCAA.

That's more than just about every Big Ten school can say. In fact, most MAC schools can't say that.

I'm damned proud of that.

Absolutely. Long before I became a student at BGSU, I thought of the athletic department here as being one of the absolute best. That being said, UT also has a very good department, and though they will be hit very hard by this scandal, they'll recover and rebound.
