What about Ron Neikamp?

Post by jhonnybelliard »

I have been a BG fan ever since i moved to Findlay. I also am very atentative at what happens at U of F. I have personally shadowed Coach Neikamp and know alot about him. First off i think he is best suited for the BG job because the man is underpaid at Findlay and has one of the top records in D-2 college basketball he also has won 12 conference titles and consistantly has great talent. he has stole D-1 talent and gotten them to come to findlay and has consistantly won at the D-2 level that's why i think he should and will be the next BG coach and by the way he is only 53 or 54 years old.

And that right there is probably his biggest detriment, fair or not. Coaching years are like dog years. There are very few folks who get their first D-I head coaching position at 54, and most that do have extensive experience at the Division I level.

Division I coaches are on the road for weeks at a time in the off-season and make frequent recruiting trips in-season, not to mention the gazillion calls, letters and text messages they send to keep up with the Joneses in recruiting. Dan Dakich's dogged pursuit of Nate Miller-attending his football games and summer league games-is an example of the schedule you have to keep just to stay competitive.

I'm not saying he couldn't do these things and do them well, but most AD's aren't willing to take the chance. His success at Findlay in undeniable, so it's definitely worth a look.

I think I'd prefer an up and coming (30 year old) high school coach over an "aged" (50 something) NAIA/Div. II coach. I think energy needs to be a big selling point for recruits and returning the fan base.

It's got to be either Ron Niekamp or Jim Welling????? Oh wait, we are talking about D1 basketball.

:smt021 :smt021 Here's what we'll do since we have such naive people around here. We'll hire Neikamp to be the head coach. Then instruct him to hire Welling, Ed Heintschel and Leroy Bates (Libbey head coach) as his assistants. All the successful coaches will get a shot all at once!!! Then, we can fire Christopher and give the job to Mike Vannett because he's done a good job as AD as BGHS. Give me a break.

I posted this elsewhere... but

Crazyfan-

Were you aware that the great Shankly quote in your signature refers to soccer? Still a great quote and applicable to many a sport, I just thought it to be ironic considering some of the natives feelings towards the beautiful game.

Sorry I didn't find this post before posting in the other thread. I agree that Niekamp would be a good fit. Michigan just hired a guy similar in age. I don't think he's too old. He can flat out coach.

[quote="Julius Erving"] ....... Michigan just hired a guy similar in age.......quote]

who happens to be an extremely established D1 coach with considerable BCS conference and big dance success (not to mention an NIT championship which imlpresses me because he was able to get his kids to play hard and play well after the slight screw job they got being left out of the NCAA's) as well as an EARNED reputation for being able to re-build big time programs. HUGE difference.
