To get back on course, I still like the helmet and some people just seem to enjoy complaining.

I don't enjoy complaining, but there are some things I just hold dear in terms of tradition.

Like hearing "BG ... SU" spontaneously erupting in the stands.

Like having real grass on the football field.

Like sticking with brown and orange for the colors on our uniforms.

Like our old school basketball arena.

Like throwing Tootsie Rolls after a touchdown.

Like having an "unofficial" fight song as cool as "Ay Ziggy Zoomba"

And, yes, like our "LT" Falcon logo.

I wasn't nuts about the "update" they gave the Falcon logo a few years ago, but appreciated that they were at least preserving the traditional logo. To simply throw it out the window, well, that's disappointing, to say the least.

This is the second time under Brandon that we've changed unis in some way. Urban came here and didn't mess with logos and jerseys or any of that...went to Utah and did the same...now Florida. Stayed with tradition.

And he WON.
Those looking for tradition in the long arc of our history will notice that the football uniforms evolved very slowly from the team's earliest days right up until 1992, which I believe is the first season the team wore orange jerseys. Before that, as far as I know, it was always brown or white.

In other words, any coach really looking to stay with tradition would benefit from a close look at the historical section of the football media guide.

Take a look at the uniforms of Jack Harbaugh, of Don Nehlen, of Phil Villapiano, of Paul Miles and of Brian McClure. There's our tradition.

And, while i know some of the young 'uns don't care for the brown jerseys of the past couple of seasons, that's probably the best attempt to evoke tradition I've seen over the past 12 years.

Shifting back to the topic at hand:

The helmet design is interesting because, despite the modern typeface, it is rather old school. Interlocking letters aren't something we've seen much of here, but it's a very traditional approach.

I've always thought Ohio U's uniforms were probably the best in the league in evoking a sense of history. I see shades of that in these helmets.

I tend to think a change this bold means new uniforms are also on their way. The athletic department has been pretty aggresive in this branding effort, and the jerseys we've seen don't seem to fit with that helmet.

I just hope whoever is coming up with the new duds flips through that media guide, looks at what the teams of Doyt Perry, Don Nehlen and Denny Stolz wore, and comes up with something that's evolutionary and in that tradition.

We've had enough fashion revolutions over the past 12 years. It makes my eyes hurt to think about it, frankly.

Schade, great points about checking out the historty section of the media guide.

I like the two stripes on the corner of the shoulder (ala '59 - '65) and I also really like the multiple stripes on the actual sleeve ('80s). But the way most players wear their jerseys these days, it's like they don't have sleeves at all. So that look isn't very functional at this time. So I would go with the early 'stripe on the shoulder' look, which is close to the brown jerseys we broke out recently.

Another important part of the look is the numbers. I really don't like the style of the numbers on the current jerseys. I don't like the shadow effect. I really think we have to get numbers in the same font as the interlocking BG to make this scheme look best.

And I hate the gay ( ) tooth stripe on the bottom of our pants. The stripes need to go the full length of the pant and need to match the striping style on the shoulder/sleeve.

I really don't want to see any of those new jerseys with the stupid piping that goes around the back or across the shoulders. Or mismatched colors on the sleeves. Yuck.

I do as hammb and only try to buy merchandise with the old logo. When I was in school I was broke and couldn't afford squat so 25 years later as income has increased I'm making up for it. The filled in orange (as opposed to white) was an upgrade. If we were going to change the logo I kind of like the one on the '80 helmet. It was only used only 1 year but it isn't as generic as the new logo. befohttp://www.nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project

But since this topic seems to be on marketing/branding a couple of other thoughts:

1) how come when I order merchandise on line the actual product I receive doesn't always have the correct shade of brown/orange. The new russell sideline polo is actualy white and burnt orange (even says burnt on the tag). I went to BG not Texas. Myabe we got a deal on Texas overruns. We should be demanding our manufacturers use the correct shades.

2) check out the customized mygarb apparel link on the university bookstore site. If I want I can order an embroidered polo in white, grey, blue or gold. The white/grey I get, but gold/blue instead of brown/orange ? Maybe we get a deal on Michigan overruns.

3) try to find golf related items/clothing online from major manufacturers. We aren't a D1 mid major were NAIA.

4) I would like to see more BGSU and less Bowling Green.

5) Is it just me or are marketing 201 students in charge of licensing/branding ?

hammb...what do you care what the helmets look like. Are you ever sober enough to actually see them from the stands? :-)

I agree. I am always looking for just the logo or a subtle BGSU. When you're no longer a student, who wants to wear a sweater with huge block letters or an embroidered block letters across the chest. The variety available is pathetic for alumni. Perhaps they don't buy enough.
I do know SBX no longer has their managers who always brought in some variety for alumni. I don't think they have as much anymore. And, the union store has to appeal to freshman.

I do know orange is very hard to print in the correct shade.

I'm still not sure what the new helmet looks like. Is it just the interlaced BG or the falcon head with the BG shoulders?

NOTE: Edited to fix the quote tags.

Just the interlaced BG in the new font. No falcon on the helmet.

The folks at the University Bookstore want to sell items that people want to buy. If you feel strongly that certain items need to be available, do not hesitate to contact Yvonne Stoner [ [email protected] ] in the University Bookstore at 419.372.2851.

If enough people are interested in certain products, then they will buy them and sell them to us.

I actually think this helmet debate was put forth by the athletic department because they were tired of hearing about how putrid this years schedule is.
