We just hired a new coach! Not once did someone say Dan Dakich lacked those qualiites. No one is saying Orr is the be-all end-all solution to everything. But for cripes sake, let's enjoy that we have what seems like a wonderful man and a coach with a proven record coming in to take over the helm of a ship that's been off course the past couple of years!!
I swear to God... does EVERYTHING need to suck in some way or another?
What "they're" saying about Orr....

Wait, who's Louis Orr?
I thought we hired "Louis Rich"...
Ah well, so much for that "Free poultry at 85" promotion...

Let those who are without sin cast the first stone.
I am not going to go any further because then it would look like I am trying to rip Coach Dakich, which I am not going to do as he is a fine man in his right.
I was looking at it more in that when you ask people to comment on a basketball coach, you expect to hear things like "he's a great X's and O's guy", "He is a great recruiter", things like that. You don't expect them to say integrity, faith, and character so much.

I am by no means trying to be negative or say that everything "sucks". I myself hate all that negativity. I however do not think this is the "great" hire that 98.5% of this board is trying to make it out to be and am voicing my opinion on that. That's what the boards here for, right? I'm still going to follow the BGSU Mens Basketball Program (even though I have a bad feeling were going to be playing .500 ball for the next 4-5 years) like I have throughout all the bad Dakich years. But I think GC made this hire more so because "he has big east experience" and won some big east games more than he went through the process of finding the best coach with the best fit. But AGAIN, this is my opinion. I'm not trying to be negative one bit; just a feeling i have. And if/when I'm proven wrong ill gladfully deny the whole thing.

Why do you think it's a bad fit, and who do you think we could have hired who would have been better?
Personally, I think it's as good a fit as you can hope for at this level and what we can pay. He seems like a guy that has plenty of big-time experience, and is obviously knowledgeable about the game. I also think, based on his situation and his public comments, that he may want to finish his career here if things go well.
What about this situation makes you think it's a bad fit?

He is a good coach, should do fine at BG. The name just didn't leap up and grab people by the neck. He is not a barn storming type, the likes of which would have left us thinking he was about to turn things around on a dime.
I will welcome the guy warmly, and trust he will prove a guy that just goes and wins. There need not be much hype about his style, so long as he wins. I frankly think his background makes him a very strong hire. He won, if not overwhelming numbers of games, at least more than he lost, in a better conference, in a tough area to recruit too. He has a strong background playing the game, from high school through the 8 years in the NBA.
There isn't anything not to like about this guy. He is a style change to be sure. But I look forward to hearing the guy talk about the game. And I think he could be a stable coach, the kind we need here, that isn't automatically going to look for the next big thing. There may be method to the maddness Greg. C applied here.
And did I mention I'm going on a free cruise lately?

Well, I'm going to do the "no-no" of posting your opinions and say I don't know why. All the info on the situation points at this being a good hire, but I just have a "feeling" on the whole situation that makes me think this wasn't the best hire. I don't like the fact he was canned at Seton Hall even with a winning record and multiple NCAA appearances and I don't like his age. I don't know if he'll have the drive to be out on the road day to day getting us THE BEST players possible. But again, I could very well be wrong. We'll find out in a year or two.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:Why do you think it's a bad fit, and who do you think we could have hired who would have been better?

Fair enough. That sucks that you have that feeling. I know it well. I'm generally one of the more pessimistic and cynical around here, and I'm ECSTATIC with this hire the more I research it.CrazyFan wrote:Well, I'm going to do the "no-no" of posting your opinions and say I don't know why. Warthog and Hammb like it too -- that's a rare trifecta.

I don't post a lot of things I can't back with factual evidence, but I will post some hearsay to address one of the biggest gripes I hear people voicing here.
From what I've heard Orr's firing at Seton Hall was political. Louis Orr is a fundamentalist "Born Again" Christian. He's vocal about it. Seton Hall is a Catholic institution and has many major donors who are "Old School" Catholic. Some of these donors did not like the style Mr. Orr took with his public praising of The Lord and thanking his Creator in victory and also in defeat. They felt that someone representing a Catholic institution ought not be quite as vocal and outspoken on such a subject.
That is what I've heard, along with the fact that he stuck to his guns and would not fire members of his staff when "higher-ups" wanted to bring in someone else in their place.
Again, I do not have factual evidence to back any of that up... but to me, these are positives and they speak of a man with the qualities so LOUDLY expressed by his peers in the first post of this thread.

I was raised as a Catholic...my wife attends a kind of Evangelical Church...they're Evangelical Lite. As a nominal Catholic, I'm not really comfortable around the evangelicals, even if they are kind of low key about it.
I can see how a hard core Catholic might be taken aback by a really vocal evangelical. Not car bomb at the market uncomfortable, but uncomfortable nonetheless.
