It could also suggest that Orr and Christopher were on the phone months ago. It was pretty obvious to most of us by mid January that Dan -- bless his heart -- wouldn't be back.

Most of us, including myself, are happy about this hire. A few have reservations.

But it's pretty obvious that the university is damned happy with this hire.

How do we know?

They are going to pay Orr $160,000. They dug a little deeper this time.

If he was a second or third or fourth choice, he'd be getting a buck twenty, a buck thirty tops.

If the university has that much confidence in him, that's another good sign to me.

From Greg Christopher today at the presser:

"Also, a tip of the cap goes to Curt Miller. He gets an assist; he's helped us win a lot of games over the years. Curt and Louis actually crossed paths at Syracuse, when both were there as assistants with their respective basketball programs. There were some conversations leading up to this day between Curt and Louis, and I certainly appreciate that."

Perhaps I'm misinterpereting your implication, but how is hiring someone who sought out the position "conservative?" Quite frankly, I would much rather have a coach here who wants to be here rather than hire some snotty assistant from a school such as OSU who will be looking to win only to get out once he realizes that there aren't any strip clubs in BG.
I would say it is conservative because it could be the easy way out....We dont know if they did many other interviews...(I would love to know who else). You dont take home and marry the first girl who comes up to you at the bar and wants to dance.

Now just so you all know this is an answer to the questione he posed. I think this is a very very good hire.

You know? This used to be a fun site to visit. Now it is a perpetual cylce of pissed off at the world or "I am all knowing" posts. No one is allowed to be happy and post excitement without some a-hole tearing it apart. I don't know why I still come back.[/quote]

That sums up my thoughts pretty well. I really can't believe this thread.

Must have something to do with that concept of a whole generation that expects everything without working for it.

Just read the Blade article about the Orr press conference. Sounds like a really great guy. Maybe a little of the anti-Dakich, personality wise, but then you had the real Dakich so I guess a dramatic change was to be expected.

Anyway, I sincerely hope he has a long stay at BG and turns the attendance issues around. I sincerely hope he turns Otis Polk into a 3, 2 and 5 guy (points, rebounds and fouls) and fervently hope that in his ten years as a Falcon head coach he never enjoys the great feeling that follows a win. But, seriously....wait, that was serious. ;-)

I do believe there is good reason for excitement in BG over this hire-not often the MAC gets a known quantity in such a prominent position.

I however do not think this is the "great" hire that 98.5% of this board is trying to make it out to be and am voicing my opinion on that. That's what the boards here for, right? I'm still going to follow the BGSU Mens Basketball Program (even though I have a bad feeling were going to be playing .500 ball for the next 4-5 years) like I have throughout all the bad Dakich years. But I think GC made this hire more so because "he has big east experience" and won some big east games more than he went through the process of finding the best coach with the best fit. But AGAIN, this is my opinion. I'm not trying to be negative one bit; just a feeling i have. And if/when I'm proven wrong ill gladfully deny the whole thing. :-D
You are entitled to your opinion. Hiring ANY coach has to be better than no coach and I've waited 5 years to see the previous one leave. i hope our new coach can get good performances out of all our players, I hope Chris Knight plays in a Falcon uniform, I hope OP has a double double every night, and I hope we find a point guard like Brandon Pardon before the next league season begins.

Yeah, 18+ wins would be nice too :-)

I'm wondering if we could renovate the Ice arena for basketball? How many times can this be said, swap locations and the BB teams would outdraw hockey. Location, location, location. Sharing the parking lot with faculty and the library doesn't help attendance at Anderson arena.

Back to the topic at hand... Dick Vitale thought enough of Orr to post about it in his Friday Roundball Chatter (http://espn.go.com/dickvitale/070406Vit ... atter.html):

I was thrilled to see Bowling Green's decision to hire Louis Orr as head coach. Here's a guy who really deserves to be around kids to impart his knowledge and wisdom. Orr took Seton Hall to two NCAA berths in his last three seasons there, was let go by the Pirates. He was from Cincinnati before going to Syracuse. He is ready for this challenge and the Mid-American Conference is fortunate to get a quality guy.

Glad to see all this interest in BG men's basketball! Our women have dominated my hoops thinking and time lately.

My (very) random thoughts after not reading closely every post on this thread:

When you meet Louis Orr, the first thing that comes to mind is class. The second thing, after talking with him, is family. The third thing is commitment to success. Whether all things equal future MAC titles or him departing in a few years, I have no idea. But this is one TOP FLIGHT person.

His wife is a very, very nice person.

Our AD made, at this point and in my mind, a tremendous first big hire. I say big but I don't want to insult Coach Salsburg in softball as his hire there looks very good too.

Our players were pretty surprised when he was able to meet them and call them by name. He already had the tapes, faces/names etc. To me this equals preparation.

Louis Orr has serious recruiting connections in SE MI, Ohio and Chicago. I suppose this is posted elsewhere as this matter was central to his departure from Seton Hall. He needed more NJ/NY players per their AD. Doesn't matter here; in fact his base is our base.

I think we talked to several good candidates; I don't think any look like Louis Orr on paper or in person. First choice in my opinion.

Louis Orr is a fine communicator one on one or in small groups. He is a fairly calm fellow. Not that he won't be good speaking to groups. I just think he is good face-to-face.

Syracuse AA, 8 years NBA, multiple NCAA bid coach in a short span of seasons. This track record says something and I find no obvious negatives. I would expect recruits to be favorably impressed.

Louis Orr has researched BG; he knows we need to build support, build our team. We have a ways to go in some areas and he is willing to work to get there. He really hopes students and alums (for two groups) get behind the program to help lift us up. First step appears to be getting our returning players ready for new offense and so on that he will likely employ.

Patience will be needed, perhaps, this season. Kind of exciting though.

Go Falcons!

If he's gonna call Maureen by name, he damn well better know who Otis is!!

Good post, FF1... I'm excited to see what Coach Orr brings to BG on and off the court!

After several agonizing years praying for a change, I embrace the new coach. Let's all give him a chance (a game or two against Findlay or Urbana) and then we can decide whether it was a good hire.

Seriously, Welcome Coach! Glad you are here!!!

I think that Orr is an excellent hire and BG is lucky to have him.

I also think that if BG hired Jim Calhoun, someone would complain about his losing seasons at Northeastern and his failures at Uconn. After all, Uconn didn't play in the '07 postseason.
