How about turf that changes colors in water or heat? So when a player pancakes into the turf, it leaves a colorful outline?

Or make it like Play Doe Hair Barber Shop sets, and make the entire field get longer at halftime?

Or make it like Tron, and have random parts vanish and players fall into them?

Or a giant conveyor belt?

Or pink shag carpet?

So let me see if I have this correct.
They spend $ 7 million to build the Sebo center,
a building that all sports are able to use. In the process of building this structure they damaged the drainage system. The field is destroyed during the Miami football game. Now they are spending $ 1 million to replace the playing surface. Did I get close on that statement?

The Ice Arena has 40 year old ice making equipment that Buddy can not get replacement parts for and the cooling fluid can not be purchased. Soon Buddy will run out of duct tape and the ice arena will not be able to make ice.

I understand that artifical turf will cost less over time. I also understand that the ice arena is on the endangered species list. What will happen if something serious breaks at the arena? Will they do an emergency patch job for $ 50,000; will they replace everything for $ 500,000; or close the facility.

You came up with $ 1,000,000 for football; come up with $ 500,000 to save BGSU Hockey, BGHS Hockey BG Community Hockey, BG Figure Skating and BG Curling.

Fund it or Fold it

Field Turf is a legal registered brand name. The fact that it is in the title of the Request for Proposals means that it is the specified product. While you typically have to specify three separate manufacturers for publicly bid projects, that rule can be suspended if there are no products of equal quality. However, I know there are at least two other synthetic turf manufacturers that are close to Field Turf. I would expect that the specification states "Field Turf or APPROVED EQUAL" And then you write the specification so that there is no equal product.

Field turf is NOT like Astroturf. It is very soft, Astrotuf is relatively hard. Astroturf was known for causing knee injuries. As far as I know, Field Turf in not known for joint injuries.

If you want to know more about the current project out for bid.....
http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/architect/index.html
Download the "Current Project for Bid", which is in excel format.

BTW- The costs listed in the Legal Ad are the "Engineer's Estimate" or budget. They are not the actual costs. Personally - I HATE to advertise the estimate. That just tells the contractors where to bid. I have had better luck letting the contractor's guess my estimate. I have had contractors bid the estimate plus 10% thinking they will get the project without having sharpened their pencils and actually developing an honest bid. (You have to rebid if you are over 10% on public projects) I much prefer seeing them all come in under budget and then seeing their eyes when they realized they left money on the table.

I don't know where to start with this....... yes the arena needs renovated. I am not sure where you got $500,000. Here is something to chew on...... There are only about 3 contractors/manufacturers of ice rinks. Davis Ice Pro is the one I know the most. These contractors/manufacturers do all the design and construction; its a turn-key type of project. We expanded/replaced the ice at Hobart Arena (Troy) in 1998 for about $350,000 from the Chillers out to the "house" and all new dashers and boxes. You can get less expensive systems (sand based in lieu of concrete). But a new ice surface and chillers is not the only thing needed at the Ice Arena. But I think $5 to $10 million could do some real damage and improve the experience at the Ice Arena. I am not in full support of bulldozing the building.

I think it is clear (from what I have read in other threads) that the multiple parties/ players aren't doing anything to facilitate a conversation about renovating the Ice Arena. Local Judges writting scathing letters to the newspaper is a stupid use of political clout and capital. I was greatly disappointed. And the whole fix it or fold it attitude is pure BS. This building will get fixed. Hockey is Bowling Green and it is where our national reputation is known. Even if its been over 10 years since we have had a quality team. IMHO - Monkeys will fly out of my azz before BG loses hockey.

I would hope that our new AD who is supposedly very skilled at fund-raising could focus on alumni from our hockey program and raise $5 million easily. Naming rights would help secure funds. Think ....... Rob Blake Arena at the McPhee Ice Center. OR the Flipper Urinal stall at the McPhee Ice Arena :-D

I thought the posting mentioned "FIELD TURF", two words with a space, whereas the product "FieldTurf" has no spaces and two capital letters.

The proper generic term would be "synthetic athletic turf surface"....... or at least that is what I would call it.

Some of the various manufacturers.....
