There is no way that one can really justify paying a top tier official $1,200 a game. Let's go with the scenario that someone played out. A drive from Cleveland to Oxford would cost around $100 round trip in gas. Hotel for the night should be $60-90 for the night, and I don't see a reason that you should spend the higher number unless everything is booked. Buy three shirts for the year and a pair of shoes another $140. So far there is a one time $140 expense for the equipment. For each trip, let's say that you are spending $180 on gas and hotel. Let's add food into the equation and we are looking at another $25-40. Let's say then that the official is responsible for around $220 for the trip. That still leaves $980 for two hours worth of work. These officials are doing at least two games a week. That's a pretty nice paycheck per week for just two games and four real hours worth of work. I don't think anyone can really justify paying these officials that much, especially when they seem to affect the outcomes of way too many games.

Their job isn't two hours. Can we please stop using this number? You know there are other responsibilities beyond calling the game. If they just have to show up at game time and leave immediately after the final horn sounds, then you have a point, but this 2 hour thing is not right.

Also - you can't just count "gas." every 6-10 games they will need an extra oil change. Putting a few hundred extra miles on your car a week isn't free. I know mileage can be deducted, but deducted isn't the same as reimbursed.

I just don't get it. This is D1 basketball...what should the rate be?

Baseball umpires in the MAC get about $550 ($800 in the Big 10) for a weekend SERIES (three games) and still have to pay their own expenses.

A lot of people that just sit behind a desk for 8-9 hours a day still have to drive 1-2 hours each way, and some professionals also have to buy their own supplies. They're not making $1000 dollars a day. The commute argument doesn't cut it.

yeah - but these refs (supposedly) are D1 refs, not HS refs.

There are also people who work 8 hours a day and make 10s of thousands, and they don't work any more or harder than a fast food worker. When you reach an elite status in any profession, you make more money. It isn't like you or I could walk in there and turn in an application to be a ref and get a tier 2 job, is it?

Do these refs make more than NBA refs? More than Big Ten Refs?

I am not saying their pay is perfectly justified. Saying they make $600 an hour is asinine.

Did you know....that MAC Basketball Officials are paid a handsome figure per game?

Men's Basketball -
Tier One officials - $1,200 per game
Tier Two officials - $900

Women's Basketball -
Tier One officials - $700
Tier Two officials - $600

Money well spent.

Did you know that Rick Chryst's cell phone (among many others) is listed on that document?

Don't forget the self employment tax, higher insurance cost, and the constant request for donations. Unless they are considered "employed by" and all that is covered.

I still have to disagree- Clarett was making more than that, although he may have been worth it, and Scooter was making nearly that much and never saw the field. Surely refs deserve a little bit of the pie.

I doubt this conversation would be taking place if MAC refs simply did a better job.

Please don't try and tell me what all officials have to do. I know better than anyone here what they have to do. Coming from someone in the basketball profession, the amount they are getting paid is too much. We aren't talking about a bigtime conference with bigtime money here. I would have no problem with somewhere in the 600-700 range. Because of transportation and other things, that would be right for me. And this isn't a conference where there are teams spread all over the country like some of these other bigger conferences. I am only trying to argue that $1,200 is too much per game. If they made $600 for one game, they would still be making about $300 after expenses. What's wrong with $300 for what they have to do.

I have NO PROBLEM with 6-700 per game if they have to take care of their own expenses. People are freaking out...I am just saying it isn't as bad as it seems. This mythical $600 an hour figure just got me going. That is all I have said from the beginning.

Looks like officials for Men's Basketball got a raise this past year.

Tier One officials made $1,400 a game
Tier Two officials made $1,000 per game.

I'm guessing we paid Teddy V. the $1,400 per game to strut his stuff.
