you're prolly one of those people that were asking for glaud to start against wisconsin last year and now you're ready to throw him under the bus for a kid thats still in high school.svillefalcon wrote:I just really hope Nate Brown comes in and blows everybody away and wins the starting quarterback job. I have! Josh and I were lathered up in SP 30 all day. Working on that tan from Fla. Absolutely beautiful day. Great to see the Falcons on the field. FMB rocked, no doubt!orangeandbrown wrote:Has anyone ever heard of sunscreen?
Great to see many familiar faces and met a couple new ones. Brady Minturn's dad, Bob...nice guy. Met him after Tim and I met at the parking lot. BO showed up and he an Justin enjoyed a Coors Light! No real tailgating, though.
I think our defense is gonna kick royal tail this year. I really do. They were flying to the ball on every play and I was impressed with Cody Basler quite a bit. LB's looked pretty solid. D line looks very good...Sean O is a pretty strong guy on the DL...he'll be a solid player there.
I am a bit concerned about the QB position. I thought Sheehan had some nice throws and Glaud looks like he can do some good things. AT? I don't know...I really don't. I keep wanting to believe he can step up and get it done but I just don't know. If he starts in the fall and doesn't lead this team into the end zone the first few games, well...he's been in the program going on 4 years. It's now or never and I hope he comes out firing in the fall. It will be interesting to see what Nate Brown can do...very few Freshman can step in and take over, though.
RB's looked pretty good. CP is in mid season form at WR...bank on that. He's totally in playing shape. Marques Parks looks fully recovered and is ready to go. One thing I noticed as the guys were getting off the busses....nobody looked to have any extra "baggage"...ya know, pounds. These cats were cut and toned. Now I know just because a guy is in great shape doesnt mean he'll be a top player. But these guys are in shape. They look VERY strong.
ST's...the punting looks good, the kicking improved but not spectacular. Some of the kickoffs were awful...THAT needs to improve pronto.
As far as coaches...I was impressed with Coach Ward running the D's...he was a general out there barking orders and screaming encouragement...I like his intensity and focus and his players seem to really respond to him.
Overall, I'd have to say I was happy with the effort and busting tail I saw. There are definitely things that need work, though. I am cautiously optimistic for 2007...this can be a very good team. The sked is not as brutal as 2006 and all those Frosh are now Sophs. This team can compete for the East Title.
Just counting down the days til kickoff...

A couple people have noted the kickoff troubles yesterday. Hopefully that is not an indication of what the fall holds because combining a poor kickoff game with the new 30 yard line kickoff rule could lead to our D covering a short field a bunch. Too often over the last couple years we have gained momentum in games only to lose it on a big kickoff play, whether it was a long return, short kick, or kick out of bounds. When we put points on the board, we must put our defense in a position to succeed. I hope this area improves and we can keep our opponents from starting from the 40-45 yard line on a consistent basis. I would be happy if we get strong kickoffs with good coverage and our opponents start somewhere between the 30 and 35. That would give our defense a better shot of getting a stop and getting the ball back to the offense.Falconfreak90 wrote:Some of the kickoffs were awful...THAT needs to improve pronto.
Did you all see during halftime when the new punter was doing kickoffs? He was booting them high and deep. I bet he'll handle kickoffs during the season and Brandon just wanted to see how the other two kickers did in playing around with lower kicks.

First Off, not true at all. I was perfectly fine with Freddie Barnes starting against Wisky. Personally I didn't see anything that was any good about any QB. If i had to guess, I would say that AT was the best looking. Sheehan didn't do much with the starting offense. AT should be the starter unless Brown comes in and plays well in summer camp.moneymaker02 wrote:you're prolly one of those people that were asking for glaud to start against wisconsin last year and now you're ready to throw him under the bus for a kid thats still in high school.svillefalcon wrote:I just really hope Nate Brown comes in and blows everybody away and wins the starting quarterback job. Not even close IMO.
Roll Along!
Here's something I noticed -
Ransom was named the starting RB at summer prospectus, yet Macon got a whole hell of a lot more carries than Ransom - probably to let Brandon see who was better between Macon and Bullock. I gotta wonder if a similar situation was at QB and that's why AT didn't play much. I think Brandon might be ready to name AT as a starter and wanted to play Glaud a lot to see how he stacked up against Sheehan.
Just a thought.

I don't think that's what's going on. I'm not sure any of us will know who the starter is for quite some time, possibly not even until the first snap of the season.MarkL wrote: I think Brandon might be ready to name AT as a starter and wanted to play Glaud a lot to see how he stacked up against Sheehan.

In any event, if you're right about the runningback situation, which I think you are, then the correlation to the QB would be that Sheehan is the starter and Glaud and AT were fighting to be his backup. He is listed first on the depth chart, just like Ransom is.
I think it's all still up for grabs, and I'd be surprised to see AT win the job.

AT was definitely worst of the 3 on Saturday. Glaud did some good things, and Sheehan made a few plays (although with some bigtime mistakes). Turner, however, did nothing. Handed the ball off and threw a bunch of 3 yard passes...exciting.
Looked to me like the staff had no confidence in Turner (just like they didn't last year), and are afraid to let him throw the ball downfield. He was also the only one of the QBs to not lead his squad to a TD (unless you give him credit for a 2 yard TD run after the turnover).
With Turner in the offense looked a lot like last year, with Sheehan it was opened up more. If that's the way you're going to run the offense for those QBs it's a no brainer that Turner cannot be your QB. You just won't win consistently with that offense.

The Sentinel-Tribune had a write-up on the spring game today. Brandon was quoted as not concerned about the QB spot. He says there will be a great QB by the start of the season.
But, what worries me is that he believes that it is the least of their concerns right now. If the QB spot is the least of our concerns, we are in trouble.
Maybe you guys don't agree with either me or Brandon. Hopefully Brandon is right.

Agreed...the QB play on Saturday was pretty poor to put it mildly. Luckily, in year's past, the QB play in the spring game hasn't had much bearing on how they'd play during the regular season.mmisbg wrote:If the QB spot is the least of our concerns, we are in trouble.
I'd say without a doubt that the QBs were the worst unit on Saturday. What I'm really worried about is that Brandon thinks the QB is the least of our worries because we're going to run the scheme we ran last year where our QBs don't throw the ball beyond 5 yards past the LOS. Of course QB wouldn't be a worry then...we'd be putting them in a no win situation.
