Great attendance at the banquet last night. A long evening too as the social started at 6:00 PM and dinner began at 6:30 PM, I think we got out of there around 10:20 PM.
Sometimes I wasn't sure if it was a banquet to celebrate the outstanding season or a roast of various seniors and Coach Miller. No matter, because it was a great night.
Definitely a lot of standing ovations offered throughout the evenings. The seniors gave emotional speeches and you could hear the love they have for one another in those speeches. Just make sure you steer clear of Meghan T. in confined spaces (sometime we learned TMI about the girls).
Congratulations to Julie Gompers on winning the Fran and Marty Voll Senior Achievement Award. The courage this young lady showed in dealing with her diagnosis and being a role model to her teammates is just incredible.
Ali Mann was named the Player of the Year (again). Amber Flynn was named Power Player of the Year (and when they listed her credentials, you could see the impact she made). Amber and Carin Horne were named Impact Players of the Year. I don't think it surprised anyone that Lindsey Goldsberry was named Most Improved Player when they talked about her stats and defense.
In addition, we learned just truly what a "nerd" Carin Horne is - taking books to Cleveland (while we were on spring break) as well as studying on the bus trips and in the airport. Congratulations to Carin and Whitney Taylor for being named Scholar-Athletes of the Year. We also learned that Lindsey Goldsberry and her 3.79 GPA was the highest GPA for our sophomores.
Evidently Curts' new contract included a NEW phone (you had to be there). I sure hope they got Jen Roos a phone too (again, you had to be there).
The freshmen (Sarah, Laura, and Tara) were awarded their letter jackets (and reminded they are averaging 31 wins a season).
Great video put together by Julie Baker. She sat with us at the dinner and said she had over 20 hours of video footage to get down to 23 minutes (and the players parents provided her with a ton of photos of the six seniors). I personally loved the pic of Liz flexing at age 5 or so. I'm not sure if she got both of Kate's three pointers of the season in the video. 8)
Lots of great items up on the silent auction. A couple of AZZ'ers were bidding and I hope they won. Definitely an enjoyable evening and I look forward to '08!

Awesome banquet! I sat with Metz and his Dad. I don't think the big guy wanted to stand up and sit down as often as we did ....and believe me, it was a LOT!!
Wonderful tributes to each of the members and coaches of that special team. The standing O's were well deserved!!!! I'm so glad I went!!!

I dont' know about any sorbet , but I was there all night. Great time indeed. Learned that Horne has had a MS for a while and maybe thats why we never ran a great number of plays for her, but still never would've known without Carin mentioning it. Great laughs too from Kate and Whitney as they gave us more info than we probably needed on the seniors , especially Thor.

These girls have incredible chemistry with their teammates, the coaching staff, as well as their fans and boosters. Although there were some emotional moments in the “thank you” parts of the senior speeches, for the most part, the girls appeared to be so calm…..as if they were talking to their friends. There was very little of that shaky voiced uneasiness that you often hear from nervous seniors who long dread that moment at the end of their college career.
I credit this extraordinary sense of self assuredness to Coach Miller. He has, from his first year, put the players among their fans after every home game, win or lose. As the years have passed, the bonds have grown stronger, and the crowds larger as a result of this. I remember an AZZ thread once where several members were talking about who they knew on the team, and how close they were to them. Then someone posted a comment saying something like….just because you go out on the floor after the games, doesn’t mean you know the players. That may have been true in the context of that thread, but not one of these amazing women would ever make you feel like they weren’t your best friend if you approached them.
Their speeches were touching and sincere and there is no doubt that there are tight bonds between the players and their coaches and families. But I also doubt that anyone left feeling like they had not also been loved and appreciated by this incredible group of women.

Right on the money. One of the things that intrested me was when Miller mentioned that fact that Honneger called Miller in the middle of a busy day in a week prior to talk to him about her upcoming track&field meet and how she was doing. When he he mentioned this to other coaches , they were sorta surprised and remarked how their players dont' even talk to them. Yes, what the coaches and the players have here at BG is special and rare probably.
No matter, because it was a great night.
....and believe me, it was a LOT!!
