Probably not that embarassing. I doubt they spent any time at all thinking about it. I would guess the "big boys" are more concerned with winning another Big Ten title, getting back to another final four and which McDonald's all-american they should recruit next.cowboyjoe wrote:Yeah, but for 15 sweet years we had just as many NBA players as OSU. Will the OSU departures hurt our recruiting?

And yet the same number of NBA players. What a tremendous use of a 17,000 seat arena and a 4.5 million annual budget!
Matta could probably care less. It's the myopic fans that must have a tough time reconciling such a reality.
So the measure of success for a new arena is how many players you send to the NBA? I would think winning would matter more. Their home record since they moved is excellent and they've won or shared something like four Big Ten titles in the nine years it's been open. Not to mention the home attendance is consistently amoung the top 2-3 in the conference every year. I'd say the investment is working out just fine for them.JoeFalcon wrote:bgsukid wrote:Probably not that embarassing. I doubt they spent any time at all thinking about it. As for their fans I never hear an OSU fan talk about BG in anything or the fact that they don't have many players in the NBA. I do hear them talk about Big Ten titles and NCAA tournaments. They care more about team success more than individual achievement.
Tiered attendence figures, shared conference team championships...I thought we were talking about NBA players? OSU and BG both have two despite one place having quadruple the resources. That's just a fact.
Also, the chatter I hear about OSU hoops revolves around probation and possibly losing 3/5 of their 06 recruiting class in one year.

I thought this was a discussion on NBA too, for some reason you brought up their arena and their budget as though that has something to do with the discussion. They may be losing a good portion of their recruiting class, but those kids did a ton for OSU basketball in their one year. They made it cool to go to OSU and play basketball and now OSU is getting top players from all over the place and most importantly for them keeping the top Ohio talent home instead of letting them go to other top programs. With their top 10 class coming in this year and their current #1 junior class coming in the fall of '08, it appears as though they're going to recover quite nicely from the early departures.JoeFalcon wrote:Tiered attendence figures, shared conference team championships...I thought we were talking about NBA players? It's true OSU probably should've sent more players to the NBA with their resources, but they have been winning quite a bit which I think is the better evaluation of a program than NBA players. Personally, I'd trade having two NBA players for winning multiple conference titles and going to NCAA tournament on a annual basis and going to a final four like OSU has. It's an embarassment that we haven't been to an NCAA tournament since 1968, especially considering all the teams that have gone since the last time BG has. Being even with OSU in the NBA department was nice while it lasted, but that's over now and it may never happen again so I'm going to just let it go and try not to live in the past.
Re: Will the OSU departures hurt our recruiting?
OSU already has their point guard. His name in Anthony Crater 5* PG from Flint and he is in the 2008 recruiting class.Globetrotter wrote:I guess we are not in the same class but we may be going after similar players as things settle. OSU desperately needs a PG and we do to. They maybe starting two freshmen next year. (and Kostas Koufas is no Oden and Diebler is no Conley or Cook. Welcome back to earth. We need to get another guy in the pros soon so my statement that BG has the same number of players as OSU in the NBA is still true. Nate Miller come on.....Otis you are likely our best option.)
OSU's recruiting has no major impact on anything we do.
Exactly, not even during last year's Big-10 Championship did you hear much if anything from "OSU fans".BGFalconfromCincy wrote:Hell until this past season I never heard an OSU fan talk about basketballbgsukid wrote: As for their fans I never hear an OSU fan talk about BG in anything or the fact that they don't have many players in the NBA.

It hurts the discussion, since it has nothing to do with the topic. It just makes our fans seem pathetic when we have to resort to feeble attempts at poking fun at OSU when their program is light years ahead of ours. What's more embarassing, losing the national title game to the same school in both sports or missing the tournament for the 40th straight year? I know which one I would pick......BGFalconfromCincy wrote:the truth hurtsbgsukid wrote:Thanks for that intelligent contribution to the thread.reyray82 wrote:And yet OSU is still owned by Florida
