Being at both wins over Purdue must have been great. I was at the '72 game — but missed the second one because I was at my younger sister's wedding — where I got to tell my new brother-in-law, a Purdue grad — about the end of the game on my way through the receiving line (we had it on radio).
Those pictures are good. I remember seeing some highlight shots from a Fort Wayne TV station the night of the game, but their shot of the catch wasn't very good.

"No, it's NOT in Kentucky!"
What a game!
My nerves don't normally allow me to listen to games on the radio, but the Sundial was playing the WBGU feed just as I walked in to get some food. It was right around the time of the "Catch" and I leaped in the air and let out a primal yell when the announcer confirmed that the ball had indeed been caught, freaking out the people around me just a bit.

Don't know how I didn't realize this before, but I just noticed my '03/'04 highlight video sitting on the shelf, popped it in, and sure enough, the catch is right there at the end of the '03 highlights. Awesome. I can't imagine what it would have been like to see that in person.
Hopefully we have a few exciting games like that this season.
GO FALCONS!

I'll take 9 or 10 routine (or at least "routine" for Corey) grabs and not need one falling backwards on 4th and a month to beat the Eagles. But I see your point.Spart43 wrote:Yeah, maybe Corey can get us a big catch like that in Boston when the Falcons take down the Eagles..
Go BG!

Hey, by the way.....that picture of Lee Corso putting on the Falcon Head on the jumbo tron was before the Northern Illinios game at the Doyt. And I do remember that exact play when Chuclk Sharon caught the touchdown pass. Does anybody recall the events leading up to that play though??? I do!!

Well this is how I remember it, not sure how accurate it is. With about 10mins left in the 4th quarter and BG leading 20-17, Purdue tossed up about a 50yard bomb to Standeford who went untouched into the endzone. The crowd started going wild as it was there first lead of the game, and the old people in the John Purdue club started in with the "well you have a nice team and they tried hard, but I told you we would pull through". Of course in their defense a lot of games play out like this with the home team waiting until late in the game to take control but I still knew we were going to win..falconforever wrote:Hey, by the way.....that picture of Lee Corso putting on the Falcon Head on the jumbo tron was before the Northern Illinios game at the Doyt. Our next drive was long, time consuming, and ended in the greatest catch I have ever seen in my life(see my nearly 4yr old avatar). I can't give you a play by play but it started off with a lot of runs, especially by J5 and it was taking us until 3rd down to make a 1st down. Then finally we were forced to go for it with a 4th and 3, at about Purdue's 30ish yard line and maybe 4:00min left in the game? And in one of the sweetest plays ever we hit a little curl route underneath to CORNELIUS MCGRADY of all WR's for a 1st down! HUGE PLAY
I believe we end up getting in like a 3rd and 3 type situation right after that and big bad Shaun Phillips (now in the NFL and one of the best DEs ever at PU) sacked J5 for about a 10 yard loss taking the wind out of our sails. I know for sure it was 4th and 13 at Purdue's 32 yard line with about 2:15 on the clock. We ran our signature play of every single WR runs as deep as they can, and off his back foot about to get sacked, J5 tossed a jump ball towards Chuck and he made thee sickest catch I have ever seen in my life. Even better than that one from the Alabama WR a few years ago, bc this one the game was on the line and it was the same thing with the defender being directly between him and the ball(see my pics)! But yes he caught it, no one around me was saying otherwise and believe me they would have! I couldnt hear a pindrop other than my own cheering that is until the PU fans told me to sit down and shut up.
We kicked off, PU was in all pass mode. I remember getting them into a 4th down and they threw it to Mr. All Time Big Ten Receptions Leader himself Taylor Stubblefield and he dropped it. I specifically remember him saying after the game that he was not so mad that he dropped it, but that he did not use the technique that he had been practicing on! haha I think he choked and having Mitch Hewitt in his face and a wobbley pass didnt help either!
So then we precede to try and run the clock out. Unfortunately we dont succeed and get into 4th down. I'm about to pee my pants thinking OMG don't let us come this far and blow it (really the only point during the whole off-season or game that I had any thought other than a sure fire win in my head). Especially with Magner at Punter bc I didnt want some type of fake or trick play. Luckily PU thought it was a real punt and Magner took off running for our own endzone and only had to only somewhat dodge one guy before taking an intentional safety as time expired! PERFECT PLAY
If anyone else has a recollection of what happend I'd love to read it! I'm sure not all of that stuff is right, I guess I could have looked it up online, but if my dreams are getting mixed up with reality than so be it!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

Damn, BGSUFootballFan, that was good. I was reading through your post and my memories of listening to the radio broadcast came flooding back. I think you've hit it pretty good. I remember the drive seemed like it took a long time and it does seem like 3 or 4 times the Falcon's made it on 4th down. I remember the curl route and Josh getting sacked and thinking it was over.
I'll have to check with both of by Purdue grad brothers-in-law and see what their memories of the game are.
