I don't think it's as big an issue as has been brought up, but it's something to think about if the administration wants to protect their new investment. I think "other schools" that don't allow folks on their field have done so regardless of surface. I'd imagine things wouldn't change at BG, and Noah will have to find something else to cry about.
Removal of turf probably killed this little tradition

If the administration doesn't allow people on their turf, I would understand. It's almost a million bucks to turn the Doyt into an outdoor living room.
They should make signs. "Please stay off of the plastic grass."

I hope they do allow fans onto the turf after games, but if they are not then have a plan in place to enforce that policy. Nothing frustrates me more than hearing the "stay off the field after the game" announcement in the 4th quarter only to see those in charge of facilities (Elsasser) stand and watch as the stands empty. I once asked him why there was no plan for keeping fans off the field. After some time the responce went something like; we only hope people listen to the announcement. What the hell kind of croud management is that!! We have great people who work for BGSU athletics, don't get me wrong on that. But sometimes I feel those same good people are not the right people for the job. I am not claiming to know all of the solutions, but hope about locking the gates that lead to the field from the stands? How about lowering the field to discourage the short jump from the seating level to field level? How about having ushers that stay the whole game and can help with croud management? If they want people to stay off the field then fine. But be prepared to enforce the policy. And the goes for games in Anderson Arena as well. The same announcement is made, as well as the result.

I have to think they have plans to allow people on the field in some shape or form. They spoke a lot about being able to use DLP for more events, and they can't simply mean football.
I'm curious if they could play soccer on field turf, what the painting issues might be, etc. Maybe an NFL training camp? High school FB playoffs are an obvious choice, and competing against UT for some of those games is aided by having the identical turf as OSU has. Which assumes OSU does eventually win the high school titles games-which I figure they will. Concerts become viable.
We were debating here, very recently, about how the stadium was shabby looking. No question much remains to be done. But we are at a point where it starts to dawn on you, a very new, very different facility has really evolved out of the cracking cement of the stadium.
The new press box, VIP boxes, seating, lights, turf, Sebo center, ticket booths, fences, scoreboard, railing. Truth be told, it is a greatly changed place from even ten years back.
What remains? Concession booths, better ticket offices, cement work, and a giant slide from the top to the bottom of the stadium. :S

The Doyt still looks pretty good to me despite a few cracks and a couple of the minor fixes you mentioned. I was recently at Jacob's Field and noticed that the slightly over a decade-old park had some rust on the beams and some cracks in the concrete - it seems that regardless of age we all have our flaws. It seems to me that both the Jake and Doyt are aging and have their cosmetic problems. They are also both clean and have great views of the game. With the new turf, the SEBO and all the other cosmetic fixes over the past couple of years I truly believe we still have a great Doyt.NWLB wrote:I have to think they have plans to allow people on the field in some shape or form. Is it perfect? NO, but I still love it and find very few faults with it. I think the facility has little to do with the game experience if the crowd is there and the team is contending. I was in Cinci recently and caught a Reds game in their nice new park for the first time. Very nice, clean, no rust or cracks and they had everything a fan would want on a Sunday afternoon except a contender with a large following.
I hope we can pack the Doyt again soon and start debating where to put all the fans and the MAC titles. How great would the Doyt look then?
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.

Crowd control at BG football games is an absolute masterstroke compared to what I witnessed at the U. of Arizona. They can't even keep fans off the field before the clock runs out. This is from Arizona's game last year vs. Cal:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoSLbrVR ... ed&search=
The exact same thing happened in 2005 when Arizona beat an undefeated, No. 6 ranked UCLA. I wasn't at last year's game, but the students actually entered the sidelines with over two minutes left on the clock, stood there, and rushed the field with over a minute left on the clock. The officials had no other choice than to just run the clock out, and the PA announcer spent well over a half an hour threatening the students with encarceration if the did not leave the field in an "orderly manner."

I always cringe when I watch Rowdy fans on TV storm the field and go nuts. It makes me think of the adage, "Act like you have been there before," i.e. touchdowns.
Our fans, go on the field, join the players in the alma mater and AZZ and then mingle. Yes, we had the greased goal posts, but since we ARE allowed on the field, we see it as an extension of the game itself, our 5th quarter. I, too wish they would just shut up about it unless they have to cover themselves liability wise if someone breaks an ankle jumping over that massive railing!
I would certainly hope that a field put down for durability can't be walked on by kids. Oh and their nacho eating, gum chewing parents.

Anyone remember the goalpost clunking some poor kid on the head as it was torn down following the 2001 beatdown of Toledo? I assume the person was OK--it made it into the yearly highlight video.always a falcon wrote: I, too wish they would just shut up about it unless they have to cover themselves liability wise if someone breaks an ankle jumping over that massive railing!
Regarding liability, I might be mistaken, but I always thought the fine print on the back of tickets basically says "You're on your own, chief" in legalese.
My brother was standing right next to that kid. A few more feet to the left and it might have knocked some sense into him.JoeFalcon wrote:Anyone remember the goalpost clunking some poor kid on the head as it was torn down following the 2001 beatdown of Toledo?
