Update on Bowl Chances

Post by BGSU_via_UDel »

Well guys its looking good no matter what we do against Toledo. As it stands right now, there are only 48 bowl eligible teams to cover 56 slots (28 bowl games). And there are only 18 other possible teams that could become bowl eligible. Now its obvious that some of those teams can be crosses off immediately (New Mex St, Midd Tenn St, prolly La Tech and Nevada, Marshall and Syracuse). So that means 60 teams to cover 56 slots. Its obvious that several of these teams won't finish bowl eligible since they play better teams their last game. So, I think we get a bowl no matter what we do against Toledo, being 8-3 to finish. However, obviously if we WIN and win convincingly, given how crappy this year is for eligible teams, I think we have a good shot at 9-2 and being top 25 of being invited to a decent bowl game. Hopefully somewhere close though! Thats whats great about the Motor City Bowl, its close to BG.

first, great game yesterday. falcons look tough right now. second, regardless of what happens in the mac - and the chance that bg makes the macc is kind of slim - the team deserves a bowl game. if you guys beat toledo next week, there's no question a 9-2 falcons' team should be bowling even if you don't make the macc. hopefully this happens. frankly, i think miami has to beat akron to reasonably assure a bowl bid based on previous history. if we lose to akron, i don't think 7-4 will do it for us but you never know.

The bowl question is...

What happens if Northern Illinois wins the West and beats the East division winner in the MACC? Then who gets the second bowl tie-in? Miami at 8-5? Akron at 8-5 or BG at 9-2?

Miami(OH) would be 8-4 if they beat Akron and lose in the MACC and Akron is 6-4 right now so they would be 7-5 if they beat Miami(OH) and lose in the MACC game. BG would go in either of those cases.

I wouldn't be surprised if the same night BG BEATS TOLEDO, because WE WILL BEAT TOLEDO!!! that we don't get a bowl invite that same night. 2 years ago the MCB was at that game specifically to invite the winner. Well, all WILL be different this time and we will walk away with that invite.

GO BG!!! :supz:

Why CFN.com continues to be ignorant

Post by TG1996 »

they still have Marshall going to a bowl, but not NIU. I guess it comes down to being about the fans, but don't you think an NIU team that has been itching to get in a bowl for three years now wouldn't bring an army to a bowl game?

Oh, and they have UT playing Minnesota in a bowl game. Wouldn't THAT be a fun rematch?

CFN is so whimsy. Last week we were 55th in their rankings of I-A teams. This week we jumped to 26th, which I believe is the highest they have had any MAC team this year.

I wouldnt be suprised if its a BG/Northwestern MCB again...as much as i would like to see us play someone else i doubt that Ohio State or Purdue would accept an invite to that game. Mainly becuase they would be afraid to play us....but we'll see.

GO BG....BEST TEAM IN OHIO

BG is going bowling. You can count on it! The pac-10 will only have 5 eligible teams. The Big 10 will get 9 berths. The Big XII will have at least 7 teams. If NU wins aginst Colorado then they will have 8. The overrated SEC will only have 7 teams eligible. Basically, their are more bowl slots then their are or will be eligible teams.

There's one thing I'm focused on right now....kicking UT's arse!!!

FWIW, near the end of the game I saw JD Campbell walking down the steps from the West side press box with the Motor City Bowl rep. I can't remember his last name but I wanna say his first name is Ken? I recognized him from past photos.

I don't know if I buy all of this talk about how we could never play Ohio State in the MCB. People keep saying that they will refuse to play in such a 'mediocre bowl.' Well, here's what I think:

1. Most, if not all bowls have league tie-ins (e.g., there are no "random" bowls that can pick up anyone they want)
2. All of the bowls that will not be filled by conference tie-ins will be the smaller MCB-type bowls because most bowls are placed by rankings within conferences.
3. If Ohio State ends up in the MCB they will show up because Ohio State will never refuse money wherever they can get it, and they can get money in Detroit. They won't have "big" bowls to choose from as they will all be filled by contract.

In short, the possiblity of us playing Ohio State is very real and we will kill them.

This actually has given me an idea for a new thread...

I totally agree....I'd love to get a shot at the Bucks in a bowl this year.

In my opinion, assuming we don't make the MACC, I believe our only hope is for an at-large bid to another bowl. Even if we beat Toledo, I don't see us getting a MAC bid. It especially won't come that night, because the winner of the MACC has to get a bid, and you'd risk leaving NIU out in the cold if they lost the game. I hope we're not getting our hopes up. Bad memories of the past keep getting dredged up. Don't forget Navy is out there, and they'll get the first extra game. Also, if any other conferences are over their allotment, they could get a spot before us, too.

I believe it is Ken Hoffman, and I do happen to know for a fact that he has been to quite a few BG games this year including vs. Marshall...
