Rule Changes for '07-'08

Post by dannyk »

One interesting rule to take note is that the NCAA plans to eliminate ties starting in 08-09

Those are some... uh... "interesting" ideas for OT... I'm guessing the OT + shootout will be the one adopted, but 4 on 4, then 3 on 3 for five more minutes is interesting.

The "4 then 3" idea intrigues me, but is a little too outside the box.

I found this one interesting:

4) National anthem (Rule 8-2-e, HR-93). For the image of the game and respect for our nation, the committee asks coaches to instruct players to remain motionless throughout the national anthem(s), just as those in the crowd are asked to be respectful.

How are they going to enforce it? A team gets a penalty if their players can't stand still??? :-D Most of the guys standing there during the anthem can't stand still! Their feet are constantly moving forward and back on their skates!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

They're in the zone; leave them be. I can't believe this is up for consideration. Ha.

As someone who considers himself extremely patriotic, and whose biggest pet peeves involve the Star Spangled Banner, I really don't mind players shuffling their feet during the SSB. Granted, that most likely comes from the fact that I can barely stand on skates. It's the other fidgeting, looking around, and adjusting of gear that annoys me. If you're Canadian, that's fine. I have no problem with Canada. They gave the world one of the best sports ever, and good beer. However, all I ask is you be respectful toward the country that you are currently standing in. I personally show the same level of respect for whenever the Canadian National Anthem is played at hockey games. If players/coaches want to get "jacked up" for the game and can't stand still during the anthem, then please re-arrange the pre-game activities so that the Anthem takes place before the players come out from the locker room. I'd much rather not have the players on the ice, than to have them not being respectful during the National Anthem.

They're not really saying it's enforceable, just asking coaches to talk to their players about it.

BS in my opinion though, they're not "Heil"ing or screaming "O' Canada." Just let them be.

I highly doubt they're talking about slight shuffling of the feet, though I have a hard time picturing ever seeing someone skate circles or move far enough off the blue line to be noticeable.

National Anthem

Post by TheKa »

Noise making during the National Anthem is one of my pet peeves too! I hate it when certain fans chat during the Anthem. I'm of the opinion that I don't care if you sing, but at least be quiet and respectful. Of course, how can I hold the team to standing still when people in our own pressbox can't keep their yaps shut??? Most games at least ONE person or group of people in the pressbox are speaking and a member of the media used to make sound effects during the anthem. He stopped after the fans complained. The rest of them just don't care how many times they are asked to be quiet or are shot dirty looks.

Of course, I also am one of the first to notice the players who stand still vs. the ones who don't during the anthem, so maybe I'm just a tad obnoxious about that...HAHA!

You may hear people talking up in the press box, but those people might be radio/TV. They do their best to line their breaks up with the anthem but it isn't always possible.

As far as the press box goes, the NCAA is pretty strict about what can go on in them. No cheering, speaking about the officials in a derogatory way, no vulgarity, etc.

I am also pretty touchy about the anthem, but I see no problems with players shuffling. Now, tapping/scraping with the skates or stick, maybe, but aside from that, I don't see the problem.
The fans, well, that's another matter all together. I really can't stand seeing people who refuse to remove their hats or at least stand for the anthem, regardless of their political feelings or national affiliation. I stand, remove my hat and (very) quietly hum for the Canadian athem when it is played, so why not show some respect for our anthem? Now, for those who cannot stand because of a physical ailment, obviously I wouldn't be bothered by it, but is it really so much to ask?

media/anthem

Post by TheKa »

I wasn't specifically referring to the Radio/TV media personalities, because I have indeed heard them come back from break and say "and now our national anthem." I have NO problem with that.

What I do have a problem with is various members of the BGSU community working in the pressbox chatting with each other during the anthem. I have been sitting in front of the pressbox for over 20 years and they chit chat and don't care that the anthem is being played. If you don't want to sing, fine. Stand, QUIETLY, and be respectful. What these people continue to do over the years is flat out RUDE!

I'm ultra-liberal when it comes to the NA, and while I myself respect the hell out of it, I could care less if someone refuses to stand. Just shut up.

Directed towards people talking during the anthem, or people who say people should stand?

All I ask is that you show a little respect. Stand and remove your hat. Don't talk. I'd do the same for any other country's NA, even Iran. The feet shuffling is no big deal. I've never personally had the impression the players were doing anything disrespectful.
